Low Cost Health Care in the Philippines?

I truly admired the presentors of the Leaders in Health program of AGSB - quite remarkable.  They are MHO doing their best to provide with limited resources remarkable health care to their area of responsisbility.  They are ingenious, remarkable, and admireable.  I remember the name of one:  Dra. Tolentino.  I think the stand of the school on this one was clear, as was with the generic medicine law.

But everything seems to be forgotten.  Eveything, all:   procedures, medicine, hospital stay, diagnostics are expensive.  Maybe we are partly to be blamed for emphasizing opportunity seizing.

Yesterday, somebody reported on Aravind hospital which expanded its capability of being the McDonald of Eye Operations.  It has operated on millions of Indians, ar ridiculously low price -  as low as five dollars (P220.00).  2/3 are priced this way, while l/3 pay the full price and subsidize the l/3.

If they can do it in India why cant we?  If we can do missions for free, why not this one.  I encouraged an opthalmologist  to make a bp for this.  But that is BP for academic requirements, for passing the course, not for nation building.  Very few, or very rare can people do like Dr. V.

In Thailand under the universal health coverage, the Thais pay 2t bhat or about P3,000 per year. For every admission, private or govt hospital, the Thail pays only 30 bhats or equivalent of P45.00.  If they can do it in Thailand, why cant we?  Are we not more brilliant?  (Judging from the show on CJ, our lawyers and senators are brilliant)

May be we are not just focused on the right things.  We are pre occupied with politics and revenge and very negative at times.

What Pissed Me Off at AGSB (by RT) - NU12 paper #7

Good morning Sir!

Here is my NU12 paper for the week.

Thanks and Regards,
Risha

WHAT PISSES ME OFF AT AGSB?

I've been saving this topic, because I wanted to cover as much as I could. Although some of the items are from past experiences, I wanted to navigate the halls of AGSB and consciously see what has irked and continuously irks me.

LIBRARY TURNSTILES

I've been in AGSB for over a year now, and I can only count with one hand the times my ID was actually read by the scanner to allow me to enter the library. The library personnel are probably familiar with the problem since they sometimes open the turnstile even before the student scans his or her ID.

This makes me think why they need the turnstiles in the first place -- do they just want to screen out the enrolled students, teachers and personnel from outsiders who want to enter the library? If the library personnel end up just having students enter due to face recognition, why don't they just do that altogether? Only those with ID's can enter. A non-electronic turnstile would have done the job at less resource.

And for the exit, if they are concerned people are going out with books not officially borrowed, then they just install a scanner like in the mall stores tied in with the barcode of the books.4

MBA AREA IN LIBRARY

It's sometimes depressing to think how small an area is devoted to MBA students in the library. Although MBA students are free to use the other tables outside this area, the separation of areas makes AGSB students using the tables outside the MBA area feel awkward.

I know that the separation was originally placed because the Law students tended to hog all the tables. But the separation of the area should be designed in a way that it's more conducive for learning, and empowering still for the MBA student. A row of shelves doesn't do the trick. If they had an area that had softer boundaries such as plants, it won't be as marginalizing. 3

CAFETERIA FOOD

The cafeteria food is very limited, especially during the Law students' summer break, when all the other kiosks are closed. Again, MBA students feel marginalized since it seems that it's only to the Law students the other kiosks are catering to.

We all understand that Law students are in school full time, and MBA students are only in evenings and Saturdays, but if the school can design it in a way that rent is cheaper during the "off-season" periods like Law school summer break, so that tenants can still meet their ROI, and the school still earns from the rent.

Another idea is that since MBA is filled with entrepreneurs. Students should be invited to set up stalls to practice their entrepreneurship.4

LINK TO POWERPLANT MALL

The entrance at the corner is the most used by the MBA students. It just doesn't link to the mall, but it is only through the mall that students who commute can go to the jeepneys along JP Rizal. There is no shaded walkway towards the mall during unexpected rainfall.

The student council employed the Rent an Umbrella scheme by leaving your ID, but I don't know why these umbrellas are placed by the entrance close to the Cashier, and not the entrance leading to the mall, where most of the students go in and out.

WEBSITE

The website isn't as user-friendly as it should be. When my friend and I started MBA, we couldn't find all the necessary information online and had to call the office a lot. Even today after several semesters, when the schedule for the next semester is shown, somehow, not everyone can navigate the site properly, and only some chance upon the schedules that have the professors listed. The website still isn't streamlined for navigating. The website should undergo an overhaul for effectiveness for students, teachers and interested applicants. 4

ONLINE REGISTRATION

No registration has passed that I don't know anyone who had a problem with it. As convenient as online registration is, there are always bugs in the procedure. Personally, I've experienced that I click on a certain section, and what registers is a different section and schedule. And sometimes, the system says the subjects I'm registering for are conflicting, but they aren't really. The system should be repeatedly tested before the actual run and be cleared of all bugs, so as to avoid problems by the students. 3.5

NU12 for May 29, 2012 by Mike Ligayo - Making Places Pet Friendly

Prof. Jorge,

Below is my NU12 for May 29, 2012.
This answers the question "What pisses me off in a mall / resort / hotel?".
Regards,
Michael Ligayo

---------------------

PET-FRIENDLY RESORTS
I am a certified dog-lover. That is a sure thing. My dog has always been the "spoiled" one in the family. And yes, he is considered to be part of the family. And why not? He seems to be an extension of myself. He knows when I am feeling down. He knows when I am busy. He knows when I am happy. Basically, my dog is truly my best friend.
However, as a pet-owner, one of the biggest problems that I always have is during vacations. It is always a dilemma where to go, be it a hotel or a resort that will accept my pet. Of course, I want my dog to experience the vacation where I am going to but it is often a problem if the hotel or the resort where I am going will accept him. Even on the house rules, you will see the clause, "Pets are absolutely not allowed", especially on the luxury hotels and resorts. Oftentimes, we end up either not going at all or going for a less "luxurious" accommodation just to ensure that the dog is accepted. Unfortunately, these have downsides. It limits what we can experience in the vacation.
It is very unfortunate that the Philippines, despite the number of pet-lovers, is still not a pet-friendly nation. Facilities and accommodations are still very restricted in terms of allowing pets to come in. I remember trying to bring my dog inside a mall and the guard said that if they allow the pet to get into the mall, I would have to carry him while inside the mall. Imagine the discomfort (especially that my dog is about 6 kilos).
And so I thought of this new idea to have a pet-friendly resort…
What is necessary for a resort to be pet-friendly?
Of course it is going to very expensive for a new resort / hotel to be established. So here is just a list of some changes that current resort / hotel owners can do to make their resort / hotel pet-friendly:
·       Allot some rooms with no carpet. Carpets are usually one of the features that make a room not pet-friendly. The pet easily destroys it. Thus, it is best to create / allot rooms that do not have carpets.
·       Protect bed foams and mattresses. Pet-owners cannot prevent their pets from going to the bed. Thus, these foams and mattresses should be well protected such that dog poop and urine will not sip through. Similarly, mites will also not get through. It is also suggested to ensure that washing is possible after every customer with pets.
·       Have separate accommodations for pets, if possible. The resort / hotel can do this as an additional service. They can provide stay-in rooms for the pets where they can also offer services such as grooming and the likes. This way, the pets are also having a vacation while their owners are enjoying their time. In addition, the owners can visit their pets anytime they want to.
·       For beaches, have a separate location where pet-owners can roam their pets. This is just to separate the pet-owners from the non-pet-owners. In this section, the owner can have frequent personnel to roam around in case there are irresponsible owners who will not clean the mess of their pets.
·       On sale on the resort / hotel can be cleaning materials that the owners can purchase to clean the mess of their pets. This can be packaged tissue, pet diapers, plastic containers, etc that will be necessary to clean poop and urine.
·       Trash bins should also be located everywhere where the owners can throw cleaning materials that they used. This will make it very convenient for pet-owners to clean the mess of their pets and would naturally encourage them to do so.
·       Railings along the shorelines (for beaches) can also be installed to have pet-owners tie their pets while they go swimming. Of course, pools will have to have the same railings but a little far from the pool itself.
·       Very much similar to smoking areas, restaurants inside these hotels / resorts can have designated open areas for customers with pets.
·       Of course, there may still be areas that are restricted to pets. I'm quite sure that pet-owners would understand that.
Conclusion
The Philippines is still very far for being a pet-friendly nation. To a certain extent, pet-owners are still being discriminated especially on resorts, hotels and other establishments. Business owners are afraid that their customers might not like it if they have pets roaming around. However, in a similar fashion, business owners have also not considered they are discouraging pet-owners from becoming their customers. They have not explored enough to ensure that they accommodate for pet-owners and non-pet-owners. I'm still waiting for the day that wherever you go in the Philippines, pets are welcome just like humans are. 4

It is flouride, good for vs cavities, but for your arteries...

You may have white teeth and great smiles, but you may soon be gone in a while.

Sodium flouride is the main component of rat poison

Viray, Mary Antonette B. NU12 no. 6 - Unlimited "Ulam"

Good day Sir Jorge! Here's my NU12 no. 6

Thanks,

Tonette

NU12 No. 6

EATING in a BUFFET Restaurant

I love eating in a buffet resto.  Whenever we go to a buffet dining, to get the food we still need to go to the place where the foods are.  A lot of foods are on that area and some you don't even eat.  If there's an unlimited drink such as iced tea or soft drinks and unlimited rice, maybe we could also come up with an unlimited viand or "ulam" in ''Tagalog".  An example, for a group of 5 to 7 for example, you only want 3 viands from the buffet table, you could order the 3 viands and just have it on your table and waiter would just fill it up again when you still want food.

There will be no buffet table, and customer would just have to select from the menu the viands they want.  They can order unlimited rice, unlimited drinks as well.  But here, the cook should be able to ready the food even before the food should be served again. To be able to do that, the resto will only have 3 – 4 menus that can be ordered in unlimited servings every day.  But still offer other foods serve by order.3

Vira, Mary Antonette B. NU12 no.5 - Bag with Automatic Lock

 Here's my NU12 no.5.

BAG with AUTOMATIC LOCK

It was a not so good weekend last Saturday but still thankful we got home safe. My bag fell off the passenger's side of the car when my husband suddenly opens the door.  Unfortunately my bag was open and of all the things inside my bag, his wallet was the one which fell into the hole of the flood channel.  So, I thought of a bag with an automatic lock.

It's a bag that will automatically close, it can be a zipper type or it can have like a magnet on both side of the bag, that when you do not do anything with the bag, it will just close automatically.  It can keep your things safe always.  4
