NU 12: New business ideas
I'm a HUGE bread person.  I rarely eat rice and I get majority of my carbs from breads, particularly sandwiches.  I always have a sandwich for lunch and will bring it with me wherever I have coffee, milk tea or juice with my colleagues.

Back in college, I remember a classmate buying a sachet of Cheez Whiz from a vendo machine in school.  I was used to having the cheese spread in its regular glass bottle, so I thought it was cool to bring a small squeezable amount to spread to a sandwich.  When I was browsing the net earlier, I saw that an innovation where you can squeeze and spread at the same time:

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/?action=view&amp;current=philadelphia.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/philadelphia.jpg" border="0" alt="cream cheese"></a>

Then I remember seeing a glue-stick type butter in an email forwarded to me by an officemate:

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/?action=view&amp;current=butter_stick_type.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/butter_stick_type.jpg" border="0" alt="butter stick type"></a>

When I went to Malaysia last month, I was surprised to see a tube version of a hazelnut sandwich spread:

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/?action=view&amp;current=Hazelnutspread.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/Hazelnutspread.jpg" border="0" alt="hazelnut tube"></a>

New Business
Because sandwich preparation has now become easier for everyone, and with the event of more D-I-Y stores, I started thinking of developing my own "make-your-own-sandwich" concept store.  This is not the common store where you just tell them what you want in the sandwich and wait for it to be prepared.  In this store, you prepare everything from scratch by yourself and you pay by the weight.

First, the customer has to select the types of bread he prefers (wheat, white, foccacia, Panini, ciabatta, etc.).  Then he selects his dressing, sauce, jam or spread using a dispenser similar to the one being used in frozen yogurt shops:

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/?action=view&amp;current=qooladispense.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/qooladispense.jpg" border="0" alt="qoola pic"></a>

The customer then adds his desired toppings from a variety of fruits, vegetables, meats (cold cuts, tuna, chicken slices, burger, etc.) and other spices and toppings such as cheese.  The sandwich is then weighed and the customer pays for the cost based on the weight indicated.  Should the customer want to have the sandwich heated, pressed or grilled, he may request for it at an added cost.  In this manner, the customer has more control on what and how much of each should be on his sandwich.  This will also make the customer feel he is getting what he actually paid for, as opposed to the disappointment he can get if the sandwich he receives is not what he expected:

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/?action=view&amp;current=20962_1333707104345_1281066881_959368_1566073_n.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/lengyistherealbombdiggity/20962_1333707104345_1281066881_959368_1566073_n.jpg" border="0" alt="burger burger"></a>

Risks

The freshness of the ingredients, the cleanliness of the store and the safety of materials need to be monitored constantly.  Chances are customers will actually get to touch the food items because they are creating the sandwiches themselves.  There should also be personnel assisting each item category (bread / dressing, jam or spread / fruits and vegetables / protein / extra toppings); however, the customers will still put the ingredients in the sandwiches by themselves.

Admittedly, Philippines is a rice country and not necessarily a sandwich country.  People may not necessarily think of sandwiches for lunch or dinner but this challenge will serve as an alternative for people on the go, particularly employees who have little time but more budget and flexibility to choose what to eat.  Because they also created their own sandwich, they will be more comfortable knowing what really goes into what they are eating.  How many times have we asked ourselves, how exactly did they cook this? 4

NU 12: Idea No. 4

Community: AGSB Community especially the students
Idea: Having a Social Responsibility Class incorporated in the MBA Program

We have been exposed to the Mulat Diwa concept that AGSB has and the feeding program as well. But after the limited exposures to these projects and some numerous activities, what happens next? Nothing. Students are encouraged to join but not all students are into it because they do not feel a connection to the program.

I am suggesting that the MBA Program should also have a Social Responsibility class wherein each term, a student would choose a social responsibility class that he or she believes in. This way, there is an active participation from the student and it is not just a one time thing. This is not a graded class but it gives the students the exposure to the social issues that are currently happening in our communities. These social responsibility classes would imbibe in the students that MBAs are not just about making money in the future (since there would be career growth) but this is also a way for the students to be fully aware of what is happening around them. This class would also go hand in hand with Ateneo's motto of being a man for others. Having incorporated the Social Responsibility Classes in the MBA would be a good start for each student to also introduce in their respective companies the concept and practice of corporate social responsibility. 4 (No tuition no credits?   hahhaha, just join SC;  some classes have the CSR project like we did at MBAH.  Or Social Entrep subjects)

New process at work

I am part of the Commercial Banking Group wherein we deal with top corporate clients. We package credit facilities, or what is commonly known as corporate loans based on the needs of the clients, whether they are importers or exporters. Afterwhich, we do prepare credit proposals to be presented to and approved by the Credit Committee and the Executive Committee, respectively. Managing corporate accounts entail financial analysis of the Financial Statements of the companies. In doing so, I prepare the spreadsheets of the submitted Audited and Interim FS with the use of MS Excel and analyze the Profitability, Liquidity and Efficiency of the accounts.

Different corporations have different entries in their books as dictated by the nature of their businesses thus the spreadsheets have to be revised for each corporation that has to be analyzed. I realized that the editing of the excel file to fit the character of the company is already taking much time. So that's what made me think of a system that would allow the user to encode the figures only in the entries that are related to a particular company. In this system would be a list of all accounting entries, whether the company pertains to service or manufacturing, and it gives out the flexibility that the only ones to be filled up are only those relevant to the books of the corporation. Just like the excel file, the system shall present at least the three-year performance of the company. I think that this will also lessen the occurrence of errors as there would be no more editing in terms of adding and deleting accounting entries. Also, I noticed that the movements of figures in cells are prone to errors as links in various computations may shift. With the use of the system, we can be more confident in inputting the data since everything is already listed and the end-result will just come out once the figures encoded are verified as balanced. Moreover, I believe that this will save more time in counterchecking as well as in determining the accuracy of the data. Furthermore, I would suggest that the system is open to adjustments of accounting entries such that "Due to/from Affiliates" and "Advances from Officers" can easily be classified as part of Equity instead of Liabilities for better analysis of the financial position. What I am pointing at is in the process of doing financial analysis, there should be more time allotted in analyzing rather than preparing the spreadsheets. I believe that this will improve the working process of the employees hence having more outcome due to time saved and efficiency. 4

Even when I'm helping businesses in
my hometown near Baltimore, MD, some
people are still skeptical about spending
time on social media. Here's what they'll say:
"How do I know it will work for my business..."

"I can't afford to waste any more time on new tactics..."
Trust me, I get that.
Having two businesses of my own, my time
and money have become even more valuable
to me, and I can't afford to be too risky.
When I jumped into Facebook I didn't have
any guarantee.
I spent my own time and money trying to
figure it out, and it took me over 8 months
before I made it work.
The good news is...you don't have to!
You get to use the short-cuts I've created and
skip past all the headaches.
Not only that, but I've put a 60 day guarantee
behind my entire system, so you have nothing
to worry about.
I just encourage you to check it out, and
give it a try before making the mistake of
passing up on facebook.
Brian Moran
P.S. Check out the amazing guarantee I've
put on my entire Fan Page Timeline Blueprint.
You really can't lose out on this, and you
have everything to gain.

Cignal Satellite TV Broadcast - an Important Innovation in Remote Areas

Innovate or Die!

As I travel to provinces, I noticed that one of the most numerous and noticeable useful innovation has been the  satellite TV broad cast.  For the first time ever the remotest areas are in contact with the rest of the Philippines.  The rural folks can keep abreast of Manila and rest of the Phil. events, and even the rest of the world.  They may not have CP signal but they have signal.

(This company though is Chinese owned. and because of the Scarborough Shoal problem.....)

Perhaps the leftist propaganda movement would have less chance to grow and gather force now.  Communication with the rest of the Philippines is easier.

Thanks to this important innovation    Cignal TV
