Introduction:

Philippine delicacies have been a part of Filipino everyday snacks especially in the provinces, but beyond being snacks it has also defined a town, province, region and a nation. Yet, there has been little improvements in the manufacturing and marketing of these delicacies.

My idea is to for each province will have a delicacy center where local and foreign tourists can watch how different local/ provincial delicacies are made from raw materials to preparation, to cooking, to packaging. Visitors can buy different delicacies at the end of the plant tour.

Revenue Generation

The first revenue source comes from an entrance fee tourist have to pay. Second, is from the sales from the delicacies bought by tourist.

Manpower:

Delicacy workers:

Initially, to be qualified delicacy worker, applicants must know how to make the delicacy. In the Future, a training program can be made for provincial residents to learn how to create the delicacies for continuity.

Finance Team (cashiers and accountants):

The delicacy center should have a financial team to take care and monitor the financial activities such as orders, purchasing raw materials from provincial suppliers and worker compensations.

Administration:

A team to look after over all operations and marketing of the delicacy center.

Suppliers:

The delicacy can also partner with local suppliers to provincial suppliers to provide them ingredients 

Benefits:

This business does not only uplift the income of local delicacy manufacturers and suppliers but also helps develop provincial tourism. 

Reflection:

I believe in preserving the Filipino heritage, and food being one of them, we have to preserve the tradition of manufacturing them and as we enter a new era, we have to be able to lift the manufacturing processes in the areas of food safety, food packaging and research and development for our delicacies in order for this heritage to be relevant to today's world 3

In July 15, 1890, Jose Rizal wrote "La Indolencia de los Filipinos" or the Indolence of Filipinos. He cites that the humid climate and contentment of a simple life of Filipinos has lead the Spaniards to think that we are lazy. The Spanish government also abused the farmers, which was why trade went down. These were some of the reasons why Jose Rizal concluded that the Philippines has not progressed

112 years have passed and the indolence of Filipinos has evolved to a phrase we hear so often "puede na yan" or "that will do". 

The phrase "pwede na yan" is often used to satisfy oneself or a colleague on the progress or a satisfactory, minimum requirement is reached. 

Another form of the phrase is "pwede pa yan" or "that can still do". This usually refers to objects that may have problems but still work. in order to avoid replacement or maintenance costs. People say "pwede pa yan"

While "pwede na yan" and "pwede pa yan" are acceptable in achieving standard limits. It dampens brand image and product quality. Instead of aiming for the best, people are aiming to meet minimum requirements

The "pwede na yan" and "pwede pa yan" culture can be observed in small and medium enterprises in the Philippines. Attention to detail will give you hints if an establishment has this culture. Examples are ununiformed products, dirty delivery trucks, unorganized files, and temporary quick fixes to machines that become permanent- (think of how many times you see cloth or electrical tape used to cover a pipe leak.  

In production, workers only produce to satisfy production quotas, while it is satisfactory to the company, looses potential efficiency.

In quality control, a product reaching minimum limits of a standards may not be as effective as a product hitting the median standards.

In marketing, there are companies take marketing activities as costs, as a result of this, marketing efforts become unattractive and unnoticed, thus defeating its purpose.

Why am I stressing the change in this culture? I believe that we have to change our mindset, that to be the best, we have go beyond satisfactory.

The Effect of changing this culture to a premium mindset will yield better customer loyalty, better quality goods, better brand image.3

Introduction:

Dogs are believed to be man's best friend, Some, have dogs to be their companions. For my family, our dog: Febee, a golden Labrador, is part of the Family.

However, It saddens me to see stray dogs that are thin and full of scales eating from garbage cans around the neighborhood. There are also dogs who have owners but I can hear them barking or crying tied up in a leash or in metal cages. 

Some owners treat their dogs as a left over disposal system not knowing that some human food do not contain the proper nutrients these dogs need.

I want to create a shelter that will adopt stray dogs around the village who are hungry, adopt dogs who go astray during rain. 

Application:

First is to look for a commercial space that can fit:

1. a small clinic: for animal's medical needs.

2. small recovery rooms, for dogs that need medical attention, need to rest, recover, or give birth.

3. a lobby for incoming visitors pets and humans alike. 

    o The lobby can have some product displays for pet owners to buy, like toys, feeding bowls, pet shampoo and pet food & treats.

    o The lobby will have a reception table for

      •    Humans can inquire on how to adopt a stray dog.

      •    Humans can leave their dogs to be taken care of while they are on vacation

4. Bathing Area, as much as Dogs hate baths, they need one at least twice a week.

5. finally and most important is a room or back door to an open area that will serve as the dog foster home. This will be a large gated place to fit at least 10 Dogs, it must have the following;

     •    Dog Beds- for sleeping

     •    Feeding cells- a partially closed area so that the dogs don't fight over food. 

     •    Sand pit, this will serve as their toilet to do their business. Having a sand pit will control where the dogs do their business and will be easier to clean and has odor controlling power.

    •   Toys scattered around for the dogs to play with and play with one another

Manpower needed:

Veterinarian: someone to look after the dogs' medical needs.

2 Helpers: they must be dog lovers to be helpers in this facility, they are in charge of giving food to the dogs, bathing them, cleaning after the place and play with the dogs occasionally.

Reflection:

There are a lot of sprouting veterinary clinics and animal homes around but I feel that some these houses treat dogs as patients. For me dogs should be able to run free, play and exercise, never caged. This business idea is an answer my family's compassion for dogs and other animals. 4

Introduction:

Throughout grade school and high school, I had a difficulty in reading and spelling. I was never went to see a specialist but it was clear to my parents and myself that I was dyslexic, I learned to adapt by developing the habit of following my finger under each word or letter or by covering the lines below what I was reading. 

Up to this day, this technique has been helpful for me in reading so as not to misread the word or not get lost in the sentences. I still read slower than my peers but, I don't mind, what is important to me is that I get to understand the essence of what I am reading in one go.

While this technique is good for printed out papers or books, I have trouble in reading on the computer or a tablet because I cannot follow my finger on the screen- or else my fingerprints will be all over the screen. On a tablet, the tendency of dragging my finger along the screen will result to turning the page over. 

With this technique out of the possibility I can still cover the lines below. 

App Development:

The app I want to introduce is an app that will blur or block out the lines above ad or below depending on the setting of the dyslexic reader's sensitivity. The app can also go as far as showing word by word or syllable by syllable if the reader has difficulty.

Controls for this app would be scrolling up and down using the middle scroll up button on a mouse or track pad for computers or laptops and scrolling up and down on the tablet's surface for tablets. 

Once installed the app will automatically work on all portable document formats(.pdf) or e books.

Business Perspective

The app can generate income in 2 ways, make the app free but allow advertisers to plug ads or to charge a fee, but I beg any programmer not to charge premium for this app as it will help a lot of people in need. 4

Introduction:

Hearing stories of taxi hold-ups, taxis charging extra, quick meters and other stories of illegitimate taxi franchises can be scary knowing that for the brief ride, you are putting your life in the hands of the driver.

Mobile App Development:

The app I want to introduce is an app that will tell you if the taxi you are about to ride has a legal franchise, LTO registered, and give reviews just by entering the 6 character plate number of the taxi.

Upon opening the app on your smart phone, it shows a blank screen that will ask for the taxi's plate number. The user types the plate number and presses the "Go" button

As the user presses the "Go" button, the system will then search a data base for the plate number of the taxi within seconds.

The results will lead you to a page with a summary report on the taxi's plate number. It should show the following:

1. Taxi's Plate Number

2. Taxi's Name/ Franchise Name

3. Franchise number/ registration

4. Passengers review

If it isn't LTO registered, then it will display "Not Registered"

If a passenger encounters any problems, there is a report button that will lead you to a page where you can compose a report to the LTO or report a non-registered taxi.

With this app, passengers can be warned before they get in the taxi. They will be aware whether or not it is safe and just to ride that taxi or wait for another one.

Revenue:

1. the App developer will be able to generate some income for development

2. the App can be sold via the App store- however since this concerns public safety, I think that this app should be free and government subsidized.

3. if the government cant subsidize this then, App advertisement can be arranged. 4

Introduction:

I was looking around the house and I noticed several paintings hung on our walls painted by my grandmother's brother-in-law(who we call "Uncle Oscar"), who gave the paintings to our family as a house-warming present when we moved to our new house a few years ago. The paintings were beautiful and really life-like, I remember Uncle Oscar tell stories of how his paintings were auctioned off and traded years ago at a time when art was very much appreciated. 

I myself am a fan of painting, I cannot help myself from appreciating paintings when I see them displayed in museums or in malls, which makes me think that paintings are a true reflection of our culture.

But in the digital age, how do we make art more accessible and more appreciated by others who are literally living on a cloud? My idea is to have a website that can auction paintings of Filipino artists, professional and upcoming for the appreciation and collection of art enthusiasts and collectors.

Website Development:

The website would be similar to other shopping and auction websites such as ebay.com, zalora.com.ph but instead of commercial items, the website will only feature hand crafted works such as acrylic or oil paintings, pastel or pencil drawings and sculptures made by Filipinos. 

To start, a member shall be required to input data such as Name, company, pen name and contact details. 

• Company: this applies to Art galleries who want to feature their items

• Why a pen name?: Some artist want to hide their real names to the public so as not to be judged after seeing their work of art. However for security sake, the real name is required. A back office of the website will verify the legitimacy of the member. 

Once proven legitimate, a member will take a picture or scan his work of art and upload it online. Each item up for auction will appear on a separate page showing the image, title of work, the materials used, dimensions, name of artist, contact details and starting bid. 

After uploading, other members can view his or her works through 2 channels: (try to imagine a facebook or pinterest type of layout)

Channel 1: the members profile page where works up for bidding are featured. 

Channel 2: the home page, where a registered member can view a roster of images up for bid.

Concerns on copyright

So since paintings, drawings and other images have value, intellectual and artistic copyrights may be a concern, to address this, a tight membership is going to be required upon set up of the website, second is that images will have small resolution icons and automatic water marks on enlarged images. In this way other users cannot use other images for other purposes.

Bidding Process: 

A member can opt to bid, and the bidding process will commence and last for several days. The winner would be the highest bidder and will be contacted by the owner of the artwork for payment arrangements. 

Benefit of website:

1. larger collection to choose from for buyers

2. searches can be narrowed down to specifics such as type of art: drawing, still life, landscape, abstract, sculptures etc.

Introduction:

I find it very hard to find rubber and leather shoes that fit right. My shoe size is a size 6.5 Most ready to wear shoes sold at the malls are big for me, I'm lucky if I find a size seven that fits well. But my cousins also share the same problem with me, finding shoes that fit well. Looking at our genealogy, We come from Illongo decent and, like most Filipinos we aren't genetically designed to be tall and big footed. I think we share this trait with our neighboring countries as well. So with this logic in mind, that there is a market for this my new business proposal is to develop shoe sizes that cater to Asian feet.

If you think about it, most ready to wear shoe brands come from the United States and Europe that cater to their races who are generally larger than Asians. We have learned to adapt to their goods or items by buying corks to make the shoe fit.

Application:

Shoe companies will develop their current and future shoe designs to include  size 5 and  6 shoes that would fit Asian men and size 3 and 4 that would fit Asian women without fitting in corks.

Benefits:

Making smaller shoe sizes will:

1. Increase sales into the 'smaller feet' market. 

2. Brand loyalty.

3. Develop better customer care.

4. "Made for all" or "developed for Asians" can be market positioning.4

Introduction:

A common misconception of paper plates and other paper party supplies is that it is completely biodegradable, for some paper plates, there is a thin film of laminated plastic on them- this is to avoid the cardboard sipping in oil and liquids from the food.

Banana leaves are used in Filipino delicacies such as bibinkas and sumans. Our family uses banana leaves when we want fried rice or omelets without the oil.

Product Development:

We can extract the banana leaf oil through a heat and/or food grade solvent extraction process. When the oil is refined, we can mix the oil with biodegradable starch adhesives to create biodegradable laminated products. 

Features:

Introduction:

For this NU, I would like to acknowledge Group 3 and Marta Fretheim for the inspiration: with the birthday cake, after class, Marta invited those who were still around for cake. For those who got together, we ate the cake at Starbucks across the school, funny enough Starbucks allowed us eat the cake in their store and use some utensils even if it wasn't purchased from them upon buying drinks. But what if they didn't allow, What then? 

The problem was where to eat? We did not have plates to serve the cake in or utensils.  Then it hit me- if there was a way to use the box the cake came in?

Product Development:

A cake box is made of cardboard printed on the outside and plain on the inside. Both sides are laminated for added durability. The box is also segmented in panels for easy assembly inside the store. 

The idea is to corrugate the box by panel: cover, sides and base to form serving plates the panels would be roughly 3x4 inches, enough to fit a slice of cake.

The front flap also doubles as a cake knife when cut.

Positioning:

"Celebrate anywhere!" 

This is the marketing strategy that Bakeshops can work on. Celebrations don't end after the blowing of the cake, everyone gets to enjoy the cake. But for celebrations lets say at a park, school or places where there are no plates or utensils available. The convertible cake box is what they need.

Introduction:

Last week I was looking around for an iphone charger/ battery extender when I came a cross a round battery extender, the cylindrical design made me think that it was meant to be shaken like a flashlight to generate frictional energy, unfortunately it was not. But, then this gave birth to a great NU for me.

Product Development:

I thought of 2 ways the friction charger can be conceptualize in 2 ways, the first by shaking a cylindrical tube to create friction to be converted into energy, using the same principle as a battery free flashlight. And second by pressing a lever a number of times to again create frictional energy. The benefits of this product is that it consumes less electricity and it is portable for instances when you run out of battery and there are no available outlets around.

The design follows a simple, minimalist concept which is trending with apple and other new electronic gadgets, a green and red led bulb is installed to alert the users if the charger has generated enough frictional energy to charge your devices.

Primary Target Market:

"On the go" and application-heavy, smartphone users.

Distribution:

The designs can be sold in apple stores as one of their featured third party products. Another distribution point are other computer / gadget specialty stores or via online stores.

Sweetened Evaporated Coconut Milk & Other Coconut Product Ideas

Introduction:

Today I was eating sticky rice and mangoes for breakfast. Usually, my family takes the sticky rice with coconut milk drizzled on top of the sticky rice. I am a fan of taking my sticky rice with just the coconut milk, however I noticed my sister taking adding more sugar into her sticky rice. 

This brought me back to my college Thesis: "Development of Lactose free Processed Coconut Cheese." 

Product Development:

It would work in the same principle coconut milk is concentrated by dehydrating the coconut milk. Once the milk gets thick we can add sugar to a certain standardized Brix(%sugar) that would suit the persons taste. We can determine this via sensory evaluation. 

Next step is to make the milk and sugar mixture more stable. To do this we add stabilizers, to suspend the coconut oil and sugar particles within the milk. The stabilizers will also act as a thickener so that the product has a better consistency.  Finally, we have to pasteurize it for longer shelf life.

Application:

Now that we know the basic procedures, How do we market the product? For me I can see this  product to be: 

a. all purpose coconut milk

b. pre mixes for Filipino "ginataan" dishes, indian and south east Asian curry.

c. lactose free coffee & tea creamers 

-although an additional step of removing the coconut oil has to be done in order to lessen the coconut aroma.

Entrepreneurial Reflection

I have a feeling that most food manufacturing companies, started out like this, having a product in mind that they felt  they can innovate, in formulation, process improvement or new technologies. A nice thing about food processing is its versatility to develop new products.  4
