TEACHERS GOT TALENT

We've been hearing that thousands of experienced Filipino teachers leaving the country to work abroad because of poor working conditions, a dim chance of career advancement, low salaries, too much work.  Hence, a generation of school children is left behind hungry for quality education.  On the other hand, children who belong to well-to-do families are getting bored in class.  Thanks to their exposure to the sounds and vivid graphics of today's video games and TV shows.

What can we do to address both problems?  Well what about having a nationwide search for the best teachers in the country just like Pilipinas Got Talent or Talentadong Pinoy?  Students from all over the country can join by submitting a 30 to 45-minute video of their favorite teacher as he/she conducts his/her classes.  All videos submitted will be evaluated by a committee composed of educators from DEPED, professors of top universities in the country, and entertainers.   The number of winners will depend on how many subjects are being taught in school.  Top ten teachers will be selected for each subject. The ten finalists per subject will be in a reality TV show compelling teachers to showcase their best.  Criteria for selection will include:  student impact (teachers should be able to get students attention and make them learn a given subject); enthusiasm in teaching; content; delivery of teaching material among others.  The committee will select a winner for each subject.  The winning teachers will be professionally videotaped for a year in their actual classrooms while they are teaching. To make it more interesting for pre-schoolers or grade school students, professional video game creators, graphic artists will be tasked to make the videos into DVDs and incorporate sounds and visual effects which will make everything more interesting for our target market.  The final result will be a collection of DVDs with all the subjects taught in a more interesting and innovative way. 

So, the next time a school will lack teachers, DEPED will make sure that TV sets are available for the school children to learn their lessons using the DVDs.  4

Oncology patients need a lot of diagnostic exams even after all the treatments were already given.  They also need constant follow-up and monitoring.  That's the reason why they have to go to the hospital to see their oncologists often even if they are at times hesitant to do so because of the fatigue they experience.  Wouldn't it be a relief for patients if instead of going to the hospital, the latter provides this kind of ambulatory medical service to them?  Let's call it AmOS (Ambulatory Oncology Service).  Patients will have an option if they want to enroll themselves in the hospital's AmOS.  Once enrolled in the AmOS, the patient will enjoy the following:

• Regular check-ups at home (once every 2 weeks) by a resident physician from the Cancer Institute of the hospital.  Of course, all the check-ups and medical records will be stored in the hospital's data bank in digital form.  This will make it easier for attending physicians to access the patient's records and institute corresponding treatment ASAP. 
• Basic diagnostic exams like blood extractions, specimen analysis, ultrasound, ECG or any diagnostic exams which can be done in the patient's home will be made available.  Results of which will be sent to the patient and his attending physician online. 
• Should the patient need to undergo any examination which can only be done in the medical center, AmOS can also provide transfer services.  It will also make the necessary arrangements to schedule the procedure and help the patient prepare for it.
• Should the patient need confinement, the AmOS vehicle, which is like an ambulance with all the necessary equipment inside, can pick up the patient at home.
• Counseling, psychological, and emotional support will be provided at home if need arises. 
• Nutrition support, occupational or physical therapy will also be made available.
• Palliative care will also be provided if cure is no longer possible.

Advantages:

• This AmOS will provide services to patients in the comforts of their homes!  It will not only be a relief to patients but also to the relatives.  Yes, it will be a bit pricey compared to an outpatient check-up but cheaper than confinement.  Who wouldn't pay for the comfort and convenience?
• Patients will not be exposed to possible sources of infection compared to when he will be the one to go to the hospital.
• Better follow-ups and monitoring of patients. 
• The chance of losing the patient to another medical institution is lesser. 4

I am quite a busy person and without the help of my assistants, I will really be at a loss on how to accomplish everything I have to do.  That's the realization that dawned on me when I was trying to do the "serendipity walk" exercise for the Entrep class.  I'm lucky because I have people who can do things for me.  What about the rest who also live on their own?

It would be great to live in a community accessible to everything and can cater to the needs of its populace 24/7 so that even if a person is tied up with work the whole day, he will be able to attend to chores and errands after work.   

Below are some business ideas that can help people who live on their own, who have to work the whole day, and take a rest on weekends too:

·         On-line Grocery store with Delivery Services.  It would help a lot if one would just type what one needs and order them online during one's free time.  Payments could either be by credit card or COD.  The buyer can choose the date and time of delivery to ensure that there's someone home during delivery.

·         24/7 Banks & Bayad Center.  It is usually not a problem when we have credit cards and can charge all our utilities, phone bills, cable provider to our card.  But, we still have to go to the bank to pay our credit card bills. It would help if there's a 24/7 bank or bayad center we can go to!  Better still if our credit card provider offers ambulant collectors who we can call and schedule collection of our payments even on weekends.

·         24/7 Laundry Pick-up & Delivery Service.   It is exhausting if we have to attend to our laundry after office hours or on weekends.  Most of us would just like to pamper ourselves after a day's or whole week's work.  We deserve the break.  It would be a blessing if all we have to do is make a call or ask the laundry service online to have our stuff picked up and delivered!  It would be icing on the cake if they can also provide "emergency services."

·         24/7 All-around Housekeeping & Cleaning Service.  This would be great!  We just call and they will be in our place in a jiffy.  After a few hours, our home is squeaky clean from top to bottom.  All we had to do was dial their number or schedule online then watch them as they do their job.

·         24/7 Plumbing & Maintenance Service.  You'll never know when you'll need them.  They will be of great help to people like me who do not know anything about leaking faucets, gushing water spouts, overflowing water closets or sinks, busted electric fans or air-conditioning unit.

·         24/7 Repair shop.  Whether it's your shoes, your bag, cell phone, oven, coffee maker, computer, or even your car, you name it and they have it!   You'll be very grateful if they can to your rescue any time of the day or night just to lend a hand.

Times have really changed.  Almost everything is pre-mixed, pre-formed, and instant!  It's such a fast-paced life and who wouldn't want 24/7 instant services too? 3

People who are afflicted with chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, heart problems or people who are regular visitors of a hospital will have a higher risk of being in an emergency situation where every precious second counts. 

In order to save lives and prevent needless disabilities or deaths in emergencies like a heart attack or stroke, it is advisable that hospitals have an information system that can retrieve patient information, specifically the medical record including current medications, past health history, diagnostic exams and the like at an instant.  Let's just call it an MID, a medical identification device.  As soon as the ambulance arrives in the patient's location, the medical staff will only have to scan the MID and everything needed to help the patient will be visible in front of the ambulance doctor and in the hospital.  This way, the medical doctor can readily institute first aid and stabilize patient while in transit without wasting any additional time to extract the health history of the patient. 

On the other side, the emergency room physician, while waiting for the patient to reach the hospital, can prepare what will be needed and call the specialists who will be attending to the patient. This will save precious seconds that may cost a life and/or prevent disabilities.  The emergency room physician will also have access to what is happening real time in the ambulance because the latter is hooked to the hospital system.  Assessment of the patient will be real time and the patient will have access to specialist's opinion even if the patient is still in transit.4
