NU 12 Serendipity Walk – C5 Service Road Pembo, Makati

Serendipity Walk – C5 Service Road Pembo, Makati
By Nurse Deedee

From November 2008 till December 2012, I rented a small apartment along C5 service road in Pembo, Makati, right in front of Market! Market! Mall. I chose this location because of its close proximity to where I work and because at that time, it was all that I could afford.  Going back, I would have greatly benefitted if the following establishments were available along the street. It would have made living there a lot easier.

1.       Eatery – There was only 1 eatery nearby and they only server Tapsi meals.
2.       Bakery - you need to take a tricycle or jeepney ride to get to one.
3.       Small Pharmacy – the nearest one is at Market! Market! Mall
4.       Laundry shop – the nearest laundry shop was at the Mall and the cost was outrageous!
5.       Salon/Parlor/Barber shop – there was none.
6.       24 hour convenient store – you would think that since the area was densely populated there would be one.  Most of the stores closed by 9 pm which doesn't make sense since there were a lot of dorms for call center agents in the area.
7.       Computer/ Internet shop
8.       Meat shop
9.       Alteration shop
Vulcanizing shop 3

The motorcycles are one of the cheapest forms of transportation powered by fuel. In some parts of the world, it is the most common type of motor vehicle in use. In our country, the number of motorcycles have gone up for the past couple of years probably due to its affordability, easy to maneuver in metropolis traffic and increasing number of low to middle income population. However, corollary to this is the increasing incidence of motorcycle related crimes like snatching, hold ups and murder by these riding in tandem groups. It has been a perennial problem of the law enforcers and several means of counter actions has been done but to no avail.

My take for this riding in tandem groups is a total ban to all bike riders having a passenger. This practice can be implemented through legislation, executive order, police order or even by local ordinance. By doing such act, most if not all crimes committed by riding in tandem groups could be minimized or totally eliminated. 3

Notes on Stem Cells Therapy from a JV partner whos is a cosmetic surgeon

Villa Medica Thailand

We had a business meeting with a joint venture partner at Bistro Mateo. I had to render an annual report on our business as we are nearing completion of our amenities.  The good doctor is from New Life Plastic Surgery group

Our conversation wandered, after we are done with our business on cosmetic surgery and stem cells therapy.  And he mentioned Villa Medica, which is now owned by a Thai.  The clinic was able to treat his child of autism and he bought the business  being super rich.  They give handsome referral fee to MDs who send in patients for treatment.

The group use organ specific stem cells from sheep.  They grow this in their farm (lab) and are supposed to be specific for certain organs.  They charge 18,000 Euros for a treatment course which is done in Germany.  This a tourism package and actual treatment may be one to two days.  However, the catch is you have to do this often. - annually.

Some notes by our doctor friend:

l.  It does not prevent ageing;

2.  The price is going down  -  from $20,000 to $l0,000.00

3.  Much is still to be known about stem cells therapy.

4.  Stem cells therapy is the wave of the future.

NU 12- What pisses me off in the neighbourhood by Highlander

The holiday season  gives one a  lot to ponder on one's neighbours.

Parties are happening practically everyday. And in my neighbour's house, it can go on for several days.

I don't mind a good party, but really they tend to forget there are other people living nearby. So what to they do?

They sing karaoke non-stop until the wee hours of the morning. I have insomnia and this doesn't help matters.

What is worse, there voices are Blah.. Blah… Blah..  No tone, No pitch, No singing voice to speak of.

I may sound crabby, but this incessant partying starts on Dec 23 and goes on until Jan 2 on a daily basis!

There were so many occasions that I asked them to lower the music.

What I suggest:
  • The subdivision officials to place a sound level limit.
  • No noise after 1 am
  • My neighbour's family to get signing lessons!

Result:
  • A more peaceful co-existence
  • I don't have to constant fight the urge to fire a gun! ( Don't worry, I won't use any of them for target practice)3

What pisses me off at the mall

MALL PARKING

One of the perennial problems facing the ever eager shopper, specially during sales. The search for the best valued item on sale begins with the hunt for that golden parking space.

Sometimes, i drop by the mall just to purchase a specific item or two, either in the grocery, bookstore or in the hardware, and usually looking for a parking space takes more time than my actual stay at the mall to buy the items.

So wouldn't it be great if selected mall stores offered a centralized "drive-through" service for those quick buy items.

The mall can set it up this way; A centralized drive through service is strategically located in one area of the mall. It should have access to the popular house brand grocery store, hardware, bookstore, pharmacy items and other specified items. The customer drives through an ordering station first, where he/ she places the order which is displayed on an order screen for the customer to verify. Once the order is placed, the order is "assembled" and the customer pays for the items and claims it in the next station.

This is highly convenient for customers who just need to purchase few specific items, and can help decongest the parking problem. 4

NU Paper 4 - JUAN VILLAMOR improving checkout at supermarkets

NU Paper: JUAN A. VILLAMOR, MBAH Section 10B
The Things That Piss Me Off at the Supermarket or Department Store

Like most good husbands, I accompany my wife on her weekly sojourn to the grocery or the almost-monthly shopping trip. Some days are easy, with just a few items on the list and shoppers are sparse. There are days, however, when going to the supermarket or department store is a real chore. Aside from the crush of people, the long lines at the checkout counters add to the aggravation. What especially irks me is when the lines stretch and weave around racks of clothes or grocery shelves, while empty cashier counters sit idly, unmanned and pleading to be of use.

I've often – as in 90% of the time – inquired from what seemed like supervisors, why they would not open additional checkout counters, given the long lines and the tedious, stressful wait that consumers have to endure. In almost the same number of times – with a very few exceptions – all I get are wry smiles, with the staff slowly backing away and disappearing in the throng of shoppers. In one out of around 20 cases, the supervisor actually calls on a reserve cashier, and not-so-promptly opens an empty checkout counter, and ever so proudly grins at me.

Before operations management, I only complained about the lack of customer relations skills of supermarket or department store personnel, even among supervisors and managers. As a general observation, customer service is way below the priorities of what ironically are deployed as "service" staff, from gasoline boys to barong-clad service personnel in high-end shops. Either you have to ask them to clean your windshield, or get passed around to get an otherwise simple inquiry addressed. Whether they are poorly paid or having a bad-hair day, personal or work-related issues are no excuse for lousy service.

Because of operations management, however, I now particularly appreciate the number of minutes I have to wait in line on checkout counters, and how service personnel organize their work to make a shopping experience worth looking forward to. I now wonder how a short course on operations management can actually benefit front-line staff, and earn the gratitude and admiration of their customers.
Aside from the training expense, I don't think it will cost much to cut the lines and make the wait more bearable for shoppers. For one, it's not as if there are no counters; checkout counters are idle because supervisors and managers would not deploy people to man those counters. They assume its okay for people to wait in line for ages, without considering the possibility that those in the line are tired, hungry, have to catch another appointment, or just want to go home after tiring day.

On the contrary, what I think managers should do is begin counting the number of people lining up in any of their checkout counters, and more importantly, measuring the time any one of those people actually get to the cashier. In my experience, long lines actually dissuade people from making a purchase, especially if they can buy the same stuff from a similar yet less congested store. In short, while long lines may be a sign of good business, long lines are actually not good for the business, especially if efficiency is a major business parameter.

In my mind, the line to the checkout counter should not be longer than five people, and those in line should not wait more than five minutes to reach the cashier. Floor supervisors should be able to alert and deploy reserve cashiers if the line has more than five people, or people wait for more than five minutes before getting to the cashier. Toll gates in major expressways now deploy ambulant tellers, and there is no reason why supermarkets or groceries cannot deploy mobile cashiers to serve throngs of shoppers crashing checkout counters. 3

The quicker I'm able to fill up my shopping list, pay for my loot and leave the store, the more pleasurable will be my experience of parting with my hard-earned cash. <maybe while waiting they encourage you to make impulse buying>

NU 12 - Reserved Parking in a Mall? by Campus Queen

Parking Perfect
(Campus queen)

Good parking is always a challenge in malls, especially during Holidays and 3-day sales. It's those times that I wouldn't wanna go there. It's a nightmare.
What if the person in the pay parking area provides a definite parking slot for you, just like a reserved seat in the movie house? She will show you the diagram in the monitor and you'll get to choose where you want your car situated before getting inside the parking area. In this way, moving around looking for a vacant space is avoided and more time is spent for shopping :) <why not for valued clients> 3

NU12 #4 Small Runner Alien - Restful Adult Corner

A restful adult corner

After a half day's work and you have a long interval time, prior to the next client call or work, you would sometimes want to go to the mall and relax but you just want to rest, lie down or just take a nap and not the usual walking around and window shopping...
For some professions, where there is no available office quarters or lounge; in times like this, I thought of a business that will offer a space or place where people can rest just like that of the playing area for male and female kids. Their parents leave them there to play for an hour or so, while the adults do their shopping.
In this new business, there will be an area in the malls, where adults may stay for an hour or so with a minimal fee according to time spent. There will be cubicles with beds available for sleeping , resting and another part would have tables where one can read books and magazines or browse/ surf the net with free WIFI available.
This corner will not necessarily offer food or massage to make it different from the usual that is existing now. Free use of sockets for charging will be available too. This will be called ADULT CORNER, offering silence and rest for a minimal fee. It will be part of the main mall and a part of the earnings or income will go to scholarship programs or to fund raising projects. In this way, the owner's corporate social responsibility is being exercised too.
This CORNER of silence and rest has always been my wish whenever I have free, idle time available while waiting for my next clinic time and schedule, and i don't feel like watching a movie, eating, having coffee or having a massage, but just to lie down and restfully take a nap and relax. And home is still so far...4

NU#4: New products / product improvements: New Generation Emergency Lights
Blackouts are a rare thing nowadays having generators is no longer an uncommon thing.  So, one can imagine the major inconvenience one may experience when one evening, you come home and there is no electricity.  Since, one relies on generator power, for emergencies, a blackout is a bad experience when the kids still need to study, and you have a ton of reading and work to do.  Unfortunately, the generator couldn't be used.  Then, I started to wonder also, what could be done if it happened in the hospital, and there was an ongoing OR, IV insertion or code blue in the Intensive Care Unit.  For these vital units, a regular emergency light would have no use.
So, what if  a new kind of light bulb could be designed.  One which can double as an emergency light.  The quality or intensity of that light bulb would be equal or at least very close to that when it is using regular Meralco power.  This light bulb would charge while it is on regular electricity, so anytime the power has a sudden shut off, it automatically goes on.  Since this lightbulb is used as the lightbulb for all the lights, it would be as if there was regular electricity and everything could be business as usual.  Now, if it could be the same for the OR lights, there would be no disruption to any procedures. < we have very powerful LED lamps used in biking>
Also, wouldn't it be even better if the LED technology could be used on this lightbulb?  This would mean savings on electricity, and convenience for all.  Plus LED lights supposedly lasts for around 8 years, so that means these lightsbulbs would not need any changing for that long.  What a super saver it would be….  The only thought we need to work on is how much this light bulb would cost.  Hopefully, in the long run, it will still be worthwhile savings. 4

NU12#4 Where there's blood on the street, there lies a promising business district by Vinca Rosea

Every weekend we visit my in-laws house at the heart of Libis where they live in a 24/7 all day all night busy street of P. Mejia or popularly known as 'Libis Gitna' near the 51st Brigade Camp. Every time we visit on weekends, elderly people start the day with an early morning walk and jeepney drivers starting up their engines ready to go for a whole day 'pasada'. Later on, employees start to get up after a long night out and children starting to run around and have fun with their friends. There goes the women finishing their laundry hanging clothes to dry in the 'sampayan' while chatting with the people by the 'tambayan'.

Then suddenly a group of drinking buddies begins to have a petty quarrel which started from an innocent joke. Somebody gets hit and thing get bloodier. I remembered something from my Entrep class and thought putting up a: drugstore, reloading station, parlor-barber shop, mp3 downloading, internet cafe, tattoo shop, sari-sari, kapihan,

NU 12 (3rd) Positive Reenforcement to correct behavior

NEW ATTITUDE on MOTIVATION of PEOPLE, my STAFF
I have been an Administrator at micah  medical clinic  and diagnostic laboratory  for quite a
number of years and part of my job is to handle people, i mean my staff. Well honestly it is not
as easy as it seems!Twenty five people in my staff, each with different behaviour and personality
is indeed something. Good if  they remain committed and determined to do their job well with no
complaints from customers. The Clinic's Quality Policy has been focused on customer satisfact-
ion and achieving the highest management standards. It envisions to be the primary choice as a
provider of quality medical service. How then is this possible? Who will work for this?
Obviously and seriously I have always believed that this is a great responsibility of my people,
my staff. They must be productive and effective but sadly it does not always work that way.
There are  times they keep on repeating the same mistakes and deficiencies. Hence memos keep
pouring in, one on one confrontation, suspensions and even monetary form of discipline. Yet all
these does not seem to be effective. This motivation only results in disappointments and frustra-
tion. What can be done? What can enhance their performance? If customer satisfaction is a
primary aim, then employee satisfaction should go in hand.
A new attitude in motivating people, my staff ? Definitely!  First, I have decided to focus on
positive reinforcement, a rewards system.Find out what is right, even for small accomplishments
show appreciation, give rewards. Every opportunity must be taken advantage of. I can start on
personal appreciative notes, small surprises, a pat on the shoulder, a nod, a thumbs up, a big
grin, a sincere thank you, a congratulatory  handshake. These gestures doesn't need effort at all.
Second, recognition of their strengths and not weaknesses, not faults,  therefore a chance to develop
their talents, to be recognized thereby making them enthusiastic hence inspired and dignified. There is personal fulfillment and affirmation of self worth. This is employee satisfaction! I am strongly
positive that starting this new year, motivational rewards and finding strengths not faults, will surely
make a difference in working out  the most valuable asset of this company, my people, my staff.                                              *peaches* 3

Beware of new modus operandi for crimes in jeepneys

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

One of our companions in biking is a jeepney conductor for his father. He described to us the various new crimes in jeepneys.

l.  Dura sa buhok -  the robber will spit at the hair of the victim and then vigorously wipe off the sputum.  Naturally the victim will be distracted;   the spitter's companion will simultaneously divest the victim of his/her belongings.

2.  Tusok karayom -  this is more painful distraction.  The assailant brings a very sharp needle and then prick the victim.  After pricking, the assailant rubs the bleeding wound vigorously.  The pain of the needle will cause the victim to be distracted.  The companions of the robber then robs the victim while the latter minds the pain/prick.

Of course, the most effective is still the laglag barya he said.  It does not fail to distract the victims and the robbers have a grand time picking cellphones, wallets etc.

So the commuters are really at risk;  the drivers and companion can not do anything to announce to the passengers that there is a criminal on board;  otherwise they will be hurt or killed.

Beware too:  they do not attack with just 2 or three members.  The minimum number is 5.  So you could get knifed if you resist.  It is better to give than to receive.....

So Mr. PNP chief;   what happens to serve and protect....

 NU #4   iPLATE

I still have a hang up with the past holidays.  It's good to see old friends and meet new ones.  There were several parties I had to attend after office hours and that's not just for a day!  There were several reunions too!   What's the common denominator in all these gatherings?  FOOD & DRINKS!  I am sure I was not the only one in that predicament.  Much as I would like to be within my ideal body weight, it is so difficult to do so during holidays.  No one wants to hurt any host's feelings by not partaking of the elaborate food preparations!  And hey, food's great especially when we're with friends and family talking about good old times!  The only problem is that most of us do not have the time to go to the gym because of our schedules and we're too tired by the time we get home.  Although there are weekends, that's not really enough exercise after binging on food for several days.  Most of us just eat up and enjoy and have our medical check-ups after the holidays only to find out that we have to maintain several medications.

What if someone invents a plate equipped with sensors to measure the number of calories and nutritional facts of the food we put on the iPLATE (intelligent plate) then calculate our lipid profile and project how much the food we are to eat will influence our present profile?  All these will be displayed as soon as we put the food we want and by pressing a button the plate will display how far or how near we are from the normal range.  It would be great if we can input our height and weight so it can also calculate our BMI (body mass index).  This kind of intelligent plate will be a constant reminder while we are eating our hearts out and how much we can still take!  This will likewise help those who are already afflicted with medical problems watch what they eat.  It will be easier to monitor the amount and kind of food we need.  This will really be a big help to stay healthy.   4
