Bank-All
By R080230

Banking during the weekends is not a new concept. BDO pioneered this offering as it seeks to capitalize its presence inside SM Malls where you can "bank where you shop". I am a fan of weekend banking since I am able to use my free time to do all the transactions that I need, hence I have my main account at BDO. However, no other banks offer the convenience of weekend banking presumably because most of the businesses are close during weekends and there's supposedly less transactions done. I would like to take my weekend banking experience and bring it to the next level.
The "Bank-All" concept calls for withdraw-deposit only transactions that will tie up with different major banks which will then allow access to their systems. This will allow us to accept deposits and withdrawals for the clients of our partner banks.

How can we earn money through this set up?
Bank-All will charge a certain amount per transaction (P30?) which will be levied against the consumers in exchange for convenience. Later on, as the service picks up, Bank-All can explore the possibility of charging partner banks instead for a fix cost which will mean free transactions for clients.
What is unique with this business?
First, Bank-All is not a bank and will not operate as such. Hence, we will circumvent the capital requirements set by the BSP on banks. Instead, the company will act as conduits for the banks where we can tap into their systems to close certain transactions.
Second, Bank-All will offer the convenience of weekend banking that is not being offered by all banks save for BDO. This will give other banks the opportunity to offer this service to their clients via minimal cost only.
Third, Bank-All can offer quick bank to bank transactions without the hassle of physically going to different banks – customers will just have to go to one bank and fall in line once. This saves the clients valuable time and makes bank to bank transactions easier.

What is the benefit to bank partners?
Bank-All will minimize the cost of other banks since they will have smaller number of brick-and-mortar branches and instead, pass on to Bank-All transactional requirements of their clients. Instead of opening several branches in one area, they can ask their clients to do transactions with Bank-All and their branches can focus on other products and services that the partner banks offer.
Bank-All also gives partner banks the opportunity to expand their reach into areas where they are not present.
Finally, Bank-All gives partner banks the capacity to "stay open" even during weekends – a convenience that they can provide their clients.

Admittedly, there are still a lot of operational questions that needs to be answered in proceeding with this service. However, the convenience that this will provide bank clients and partner banks seems too great not to be explored. 4

Serendipity Walk at Annapolis Street, Greenhills
By R080230
I live along Annapolis St. Greenhills which seems to have almost everything one needs. I have never tried walking along the length of the street and just think of new business ventures I can do until now. The “serendipity walk” ended pretty good actually with new business ideas I have never thought missing in my community until now. Here are some of the more unique ideas I came up with:
a.)    Community trash bins with advertisement – Talk with the municipal government to set up trash bins all over the barangay. These trash bins will be in support of a city ordinance prohibiting littering in the city and backed by a hefty littering fine. These trash bins will be spread throughout the municipal and will have a provision for ads. Establishments within the vicinity can place their ads for a monthly fee. Receptacles will of high quality design and user friendly as it will encourage people to place their trash in the right place.

b.)     Efficient and community friendly public transport system – Tie up with the city government of San Juan to set up public transport stops all over the city. Buses and jeepneys will be required to load and unload only in these places. For profit, ad placements will be available and food kiosks can also be set up for a monthly fee. This can be expanded into a private shuttle service that will ply through the different subdivisions, MRT stations, restaurants and other interesting places.

c.)     Outsourced city cleaning and maintenance – Set up a company that will take care of cleaning and maintaining cities and municipalities. For a monthly fee, the company can handle city maintenance such as cleaning of roads, taking care of the city greens and general cleaning of public places within the city. This service can be offered to other municipalities so that instead of them hiring government workers, they can just outsource the project to us. In return, we will charge them a monthly fee and as more municipalities sign up, the company can benefit from economies of scale.

d.)    Night market at Greenhills Shopping Centre – Organize a regular night market showcasing Filipino handicraft, food and other things. Night markets are very popular tourist attraction in other countries which we lack in Metro Manila. Where else is it better to put up a night market showcasing Filipino products than in Greenhills, the country’s premiere flea market place.

e.)    Parking building with valet service – Put up a car park building that provides valet parking for customers of Greenhills Shopping Centre and other establishments along Annapolis Street. Parking is a major headache in the area due to Greenhills Shopping Centre, high density residential buildings and offices all over the street. Vacant parking lots are available along the street but the spaces are not maximized. We can put up a parking lot at the far end of the street where customers can just text whenever they need to have their cars deliver already wherever they are in the street. Converted tricycles can also be used by those parking to go anywhere along the street. Of course, this parking will have a premium rate, but in return, we will give the convenience of having their parked cars delivered to them. This service can be expanded in car cleaning and maintenance check.   3.5

NU IDEA#1 -by RO8023 Turning Waste Paper into Advantage

TURNING WASTE PAPER INTO AN ADVANTAGE
By R08023

What pisses you off in your office? What must be done?

What is frustrating in the company that I work for is that we have a “hot desking” policy and yet, the amount of papers that you have to fill up for any approval is still very high. This result to a lot of paper lying around the office that ends up as trash.

“Hot desking” is a policy that does not assign any actual table to sales and marketing staff of Sony Philippines. The amount of available seats then at the office is reduced to about 50% only of the number of sales and marketing staff and these seats are signed up for once you are in the office. This policy encourages sales and marketing staff to be out of the office almost all the time and do their rounds in the market place where they actually need to be. This is a great and innovative solution to both a smaller work place and in encouraging higher productivity to sales and marketing staffs. However, my main problem here is that the amount of paper works one has to fill out for any request is still not reduced. In the end, one ends up with a pile of paper on his or her desk and since a sales and marketing staff really does not have any permanent seat in the office workplace, it ends up in piling up in the car or getting lost somewhere in the office. Worse, this goes against green policy where paper usage reduction is still not achievable to levels that we intend to comply with.

My solution to this is e-approval – which is not really something new since this has been a practice of a lot of companies now. A lot of companies are implementing this idea to reduce paper consumption for both cost cutting purposes and waste reduction programs. Here are some ways to better implement this program – at least in Sony Philippines:
a.)    Remove all paper forms in the office and instead, do it electronically. Develop an in-house program that is linked to the Intranet or to Outlook so as to make it very “customer” friendly. The main reason as to why there is much resistance in the use of e-approval and e-forms is that it ends up being more complicated and time consuming to do. By making it the only possible to get one’s approval done and making sure that it is very customer friendly to use will, I believe, will result to 100% employee compliance.
b.)     Encourage paper reduction through recognition. The use of the company’s printers should be monitored through global ID’s and award the top 5 people who has the least number of printer usage every month.
c.)     Allocate paper supply to make employees value their paper supply more.
d.)    Use of visual workplace to make employees be more aware of the value of paper reduction programs.
e.)    Invest in technologies to replace paper usage. A great example is the use of tablet which enables employees to bring their work to other places without having to print things.
f.)     Invest in tables which you can write on using pens and erase as quickly. This reduces the use of “scratch papers” because you can use your tables to write down quick notes.
A technology that I want to conceptualize and develop is a portable paper recycling machine that allows quick production of fresh papers from used, old ones. I am thinking of a contraption where in you throw all your papers in, gets shred and goes through a process of paper making similar to principles of the Fourdrinier Machine[1]. I was going through the Internet for a portable paper recycling machine, even one that can create low quality paper, but could not find any. In any case, a portable paper recycling will be a helpful concept to any business, even if it is only capable of producing low quality and quantity of paper.

Another possible option to encourage is the use of eco-friendly papers. It would be very helpful if we can come up with papers that are “washable” using water and special machines that clear it off anything written on it. Imagine having a supply of these eco-papers and after using these papers, are put on a specialized machine that “cleans” it of anything written on it and are recycled back for another round of usage.

These practices, investments and “future technologies” will ultimately achieve reduction on huge amounts of paper waste. The benefits of this are enormous for the company – even beyond the cost of buying new reams of papers for usage. For one, hot desking and storage facilities for documents can be reduced thus reducing space needed. Another is the claim to an environment friendly company which is increasingly becoming a strong preposition for many companies in an increasingly “green” society.
