NU 12 #12 MBAH by Sugar Scalpel - follow up and checking subordinate work

Nu 12: What pisses me off at our office? What must be done?

Entrep AGSB MBAH 10B
Sugar scalpel

The environment where we work sometimes reflect how we are viewed by our customers or clients. If we believe in this saying, then we spend time and effort to really tidy up our office and make sure everything is in good working condition. We instruct our secretaries to fix everything and sometimes make them a schedule of activities or things to do so that you don't have to keep on reminding them. This is an ideal set-up. Unfortunately, everything doesn't always go as planned. What pisses me most in the office is failing to accomplish the necessary paperworks needed to satisfy government regulatory agencies. That means accomplishing and paying our income taxes, municipal/mayor's permits, getting our residence certificate, PTR, paying and renewing our Philhealth accreditations and many others. I always remind my secretary all those things and assume that everything is taken cared of since you reminded your secretary. Alas, when you look and check for those things, its non-existent. What must be done about it?

First, never ever assume that what you have instructed to your secretary will be followed to the letter. Second, you must physically check the necessary proof like receipts, the permits themselves, the paperworks themselves to make sure that everything was really accomplished. Third, always have a checklist on what to do and physically check with your secretary whether its done. Fourth, always check and check and never ever assume that everything is ok unless you yourself did so. If you do not do these things, it will be very costly on your part, not your secretary's part, and you will end up fuming mad and suffering the consequences.     3

NU12 #10 MBAH by Sugar Scalpel - dealing with smoking habit

New Products/Product Improvements: Cigarette Health Markers

Entrep AGSB MBAH 10B
Sugar Scalpel

Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body resulting to diseases that reduce the health of smokers in general. Smoking accounts for 443,000 deaths or nearly one out of five deaths each year in the United States, more than all deaths caused by HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides and murders combined(Centers for Disease Control). So what can we do about it? As of now, there are several programs being implemented worldwide such as not allowing smoking in public places like school, public transport, hospital, buildings, and many others. Even when there are programs being implemented, smoking is still an ever increasing threat worldwide.

I think we should re-evaluate our programs about reducing smoking and focus more on smokers themselves. We should focus on the psyche of the smokers themselves to be able to influence their behavior about reducing or eventually stopping this dreaded habit. One way of doing this is by putting health markers on every stick of the cigarette. We can put heart and lung figures on every cigarette stick and put a poison symbol at the most proximal part of the cigarette stick. In this way, smokers will see that as they are puffing and consuming the cigarette and the cigarette getting shorter and shorter, they will see that they are burning their heart & lungs and getting nearer to the poison sign which only means death. In this way, they will always see the poison sign every stick of cigarette they consume and hopefully realize thru psyche conditioning that continuing on consuming cigarettes will eventually catch up on them and "poison" or kill them sooner than they expected. 35

NU 12: New Products/Product Improvements: Heads Up Display for navigation system

Entrep AGSB MBAH 10B
Sugar Scalpel

Newer vehicles now are offering navigation system as standard or optional accessories because of its inherent usefulness. For sure you have experienced getting lost on your way to a destination you are not familiar with and you will only realize the importance of navigation systems in this setting. But that is not the only benefit you get from such system, it will also tell you alternative ways if there is heavy traffic and other directions that are more direct & nearer. The only problem with navigation systems are that they are usually located in the center console of vehicles that necessitate the user/driver of a vehicle to shift his focus from the road to the center console. Boom! Accident! When driving, the first and most critical rule is to stay always focus on the road ahead to prevent dangerous accident. But when you are lost and panicking and might miss an important occasion or meeting, you tend to focus more on the navigation system screen and more importantly, away from the road ahead.
Now, all navigation systems should be mandated by the government regulatory agencies to feature a heads-up display, usually on the windshield at eye level of the driver of a vehicle so that drivers can follow the directions of the navigation system without removing his focus on the road ahead. In this way, the focus of the driver is not distracted and can prevent serious or sometimes fatal injuries from vehicular accidents. We should remember that roads are now the biggest killer of young people over the age of 10, road traffic injuries now the single biggest source of fatality among 10 to 24 year olds worldwide.  4      <affordable kaya?>

NU 12 #7 MBAH by Sugar Scalpel - Pinoy MD

NU 12 Professionalism: New Practice: Pinoy MD Search

Entrep AGSB MBAH 10B
Sugar Scalpel

In this day and age of lightning fast connection and information technology, there are still other professions & industries that are slow in its adaptation. A noted profession that is a little slow in harnessing the power of information technology are doctors. If you make a survey of practicing doctors, a good majority are still using the archaic patient's chart in their clinic where they write down all the information about a patient including the diagnosis, illnesses, laboratory results, treatment, etc., usually on a piece of paper whose template are archaic in itself and usually given by medical representatives. So, if the secretary of a doctor is absent, the doctor himself/herself or a reliever will retrieve the patient's chart wasting precious time. In addition, if they are out of the clinic and somewhere else and suddenly receive a call from the emergency room of the hospital where he/she is practicing regarding a certain patient of his/her, most of the time its very hard to recall the last time the patient visited your clinic let alone remember his/her illness and the medications the patient is taking. Sounds familiar for most doctors? Yes of course. In this generation, we, doctors, should take full advantage of the technology, invest a little in computers/tablets/smartphones/phablets to be able to make our profession more efficient and productive, and at the same time, make good use of our time.

Now comes Pinoy MD, a google type search engine for doctors with many more features. First, Pinoy MD will include the list of all doctors actively practicing in the country, together with their specialization, clinic hours, clinic or hospital location where they are practicing, telephone numbers and others where patients can see all this information thru a doctor's webpage. Included in the doctor's webpage are the clinical records of all patients but can only be accessed by the doctor with its corresponding codes. These informations are all stored in the cloud. In this way, the patients can make an appointment with their chosen doctor in the place convenient for the patients, the doctor can confirm the appointment and at the same time, the doctor can also immediately review the records of a patient if the patient has already visited the doctor's clinic before. Since these are all stored in a cloud, it can be accessed anytime anywhere and in whatever format the patient or doctor is using based on their device(iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry, etc.)This will make the experience of a patient consulting with a doctor a breeze, and the doctor will be more efficient and knowledgeable about a patient whether in a consultation setting or an emergency setting where complete clinical patient information is just a click away.     3

NU 12 #6 by Sugar Scalpel - Euro 4 diesel

NU 12: New Products/Product Improvements: Euro Diesel IV from Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc.
Sugar Scalpel
Entrep AGSB MBAH 10B

"Go Green Future", the campaign slogan of Unioil is very timely and urgent in our generation not only because we are more aware of the effects of climate change brought about by air pollution but more importantly we can help reduce it by being conscious about what we use in our everyday life. Our motor vehicle is a major source of air pollution in our country, not to mention the coal fired power plants which is the major source of global warming, and it is but prudent that we be made aware that we have choices with regards to the fuels we use to power our motor vehicles especially diesel fuel. Our current fuel regulations as mandated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) only require diesel fuel to pass Euro II level. This means our Euro II diesel contains 500 parts per million of sulfur. The target year that the national government mandates our fuel to be Euro IV diesel will be 2016, a good 3 years away.
Enter Unioil's Euro IV diesel now, containing only 50 parts per million of sulfur, offered since February 2012 but only recently promoted last December 2012. That is a reduction of 90% compared to the current 500 parts per million of sulfur offered by most of the fuel companies in the Philippines. Not only was sulfur content in emissions lower but most of the noxious gases and particulates were also reduced by approximately 83%.  Exhaust emissions are also far less dark, and since the diesel fuel has lower sulfur content, the engine will last longer because sulfur is highly corrosive to an engine's internals as well as its pollution control devices such as catalytic converter and particulate filter. Diesel engines will be far more fuel-efficient, quieter and with less vibration and offer better cold-start performance. So what is keeping the majority of the Filipinos from taking advantage of this "clean" product from Unioil. First, Unioil is a relatively small player in the oil industry, as such, they have very few retail outlets in the country, all in Luzon. Solution: encourage them to open up more retail outlets and open their company to investors so they have more capital to expand their operations throughout the country. Second, Unioil lacks marketing drive to make most of us aware of the availability of this new product now and its advantages so that more Filipinos will realize the benefits of the Euro IV Diesel.

Solution: advertise on newspaper, tabloids, radio and television for more exposure of their excellent product. The government should also encourage and promote the use of Euro IV diesel now if it is really serious about improving our air pollution level, not bend to the lobbying power of the big oil players in the country(the big 3)who are still producing the dirty Euro II Diesel. It really puzzles me why a small oil industry player can afford to sell Euro IV diesel while the big 3 multinational and richer companies are still stuck with the Euro II "dirty" diesel.    4

NU 12#4 MBAH 10B By Sugar Scalpel - Virtual Nurses on Call

Professionalism- New Work: "Virtual Nurse On Call"
Sugar Scalpel
MBAH 10B Entrep

Nurses nowadays are plentiful and most of them find it hard to seek employment in our hospitals or clinics. This phenomenon has been the result of the previous nursing boom of the early part of the 21st century when the demand worldwide, especially in North America, the favorite destination of our nurses because of its better paying employers, far exceeded the available supply. As a result back then, the Philippines exerted tremendous efforts to increase our nursing course admissions and nursing schools to be able to produce more nurses to supply the ever increasing demands. It even forced a lot of already practicing physicians to take up nursing courses to be able to take that opportunity to work in the "land of milk and honey". Alas, the economy worldwide, most especially in North america, turned sour and took a downward course forcing many hospitals in North America to cut down on healthcare cost gravely affecting the employment of Filipino nurses in the United States. The glut of unemployed nurses in our country is the result of that economic downturn. So, what opportunity can we think of to help our many unemployed nurses who spent a lot of effort, time and money for their education only to languish in their unemployed state?

I propose to put up an NEA or Nurses Employment Agency all over the country and encourage all unemployed nurses to apply and be included in the pool of employable nurses. Once there is already a master list of the available nurses, the NEA will develop a website to be advertised in the media(print, TV, radio, online) all over the country. This website will serve as portal wherein any hospitals, clinics, hospice, nursing homes, homes for the aged, resorts or even homes in need of nurses to take care of a sick relative all over the country can request for a nurse or nurses on a 24/7 basis. For example, a big hospital in Quezon City experienced a sudden shortage of nurses for this certain day in the operating room due to absences and the increased demand on that day due to the unusually high number of scheduled operations that day, they will simply request online from the NEA and the NEA will provide the requested number of nurses with operating room experience and expertise to augment the needed nursing manpower for that day. The hospital will also pay online as the request is made based on the prevailing rates of nurses for that particular locality with a certain premium(depending on the time, i.e. with night differentials if it falls on 10pm to 6am shift, holidays and other labor mandated add ons). The NEA will then provide the requesting hospitals with the credentials of the nurses in advance via online (including the ID) that they will send for proper identification. The agency will then charge an additional 20% of the transaction fee as their cut or service fee. Another example is when you have a terminally ill relative in Cebu who is for discharge from a hospital and you worry about who will take care of them at home. All you need to do is go online again as already mentioned above and request for the needed nurse or nurses with experience in taking care of terminally ill patients to help you in taking care of your sick relative. In this way, you earn money for the agency as a business and at the same time help our nurses find meaningful employment wherever they may be, plus the added bonus of augmenting the staff of hospitals on a temporary basis anytime, helping us take care of sick relatives at home especially if we do not have the experience and many more benefits.    4

NU 12 #3 Posting on Line of Available Parking at Malls

What Pisses You Off at the Mall? Parking!
NU 12 #3

Entrepreneurship
AGSB MBAH 10B H04
Sugar Scalpel

I think one of the most annoying and time consuming efforts going to a mall is finding a parking space especially during peak hours. This has been a problem getting bigger by the day because of our increasing population, a lot of cars nowadays which is increasing in numbers and malls which are also getting bigger and bigger but with parking spaces not proportionately adjusting to the increasing size of the malls, add to that the almost monthly "sale" being offered by those malls. The consequences of all these are costly in terms of our wasted, unproductive time waiting in line for parking space vacancies, wasted fuel, increasing air pollution due to the many cars idling while in line for parking and many more.

What i suggest is allow malls to post their available parking spaces online at real time. Since the availability of the monitoring system of parking spaces, we can now see when we enter mall parkings the available slots on what floor are available. This information can be posted online at real time so customers can view them before actually going to their preferred mall. What i suggest is make the available parking spaces be available for reservation by customers online. The process will be like this: I want to go to the mall at 1pm to 3pm to do my shopping for gifts for my kids. I then go online, look at parking spaces available, reserve a parking space for 2 hrs. at 1pm to 3pm, pay online via credit card, mall will reserve the parking space at the designated time. The policy of the mall shall be 2 hrs. minimum time for reservation at P100/2hrs. Customers shall come on time and will be given only 5 mins. waiting time after which the parking space will be given to walk in customers already in the mall. Mall managers will only allow vehicles to enter parking areas if they have reservations done previously online and allow entry of walk in customers only if reserve customers do not arrive within 5 mins. of their reserve entry time. This will encourage us to come on time, otherwise we wasted P100. In case the customer of the reserve parking space arrives on time and uses the parking space and at the same time exceeded the 2 hours reservation, he will be charged higher P100/hr for the excess time, as penalty for exceeding the time which would have been available to another customer and at the same time teach us to stick to our designated plan to buy gifts only in 2 hours as we previously want, teaching us to use our time wisely and avoid waste of time. In this manner, malls and customers can be more efficient with their time management, customers will be more precise with what they will do in the mall, parking spaces will be utilized more efficiently and mall will earn more while customers will be able to accomplish his/her task on time and more conveniently.  4

Smart Card for Patients When They Enter Hospitals
Pseudonym: Sugar Scalpel

A patient is called a patient I guess because he/she is patient enough to wait for the doctor or his/her turn to be called to be examined for his/her medical condition. If you have been a patient yourself, you should have already experienced being asked for your personal information like name, age, sex, date of birth, address, profession, religion, who to notify in case of emergency, mode of payment(cash or HMO), Philhealth accreditation, history of previous illnesses and doctor visits, etc., etc., over and over again everytime you visit a clinic or hospital while in deep pain and/or not feeling well. Frustrating? Irritating? Sounds all too familiar. But there are now ways on how to make the situation better and a more pleasant experience for our beloved patients. In some of the private hospitals we have visited, they have existing credit card type cards with their name on it and hospital number for easy retrieval of their personal information but they will still ask you several more questions for verification. But what we are embarking on is to be able to incorporate a smart chip into their credit card type patient cards, just like some of the newer bank credit cards, to be able to incorporate more data to include not only a patient's personal information but also their medical history, the names of the doctors they have visited, their allergies, their current medications, etc., so that when they enter a clinic or hospital, they will just present their "smart card" with all the needed information and this will be scanned by a computer scanner or bar-code reader and presto, the healthcare provider will be completely and comprehensively informed of a patient's medical condition in a few seconds and can concentrate on providing treatment to the present medical problem of a patient without irritating the patient with too many questions and causing them inconvenience when they are already experiencing a painful or difficult medical condition. This system is easy to set-up due to the already existing technology like the small smart chips they incorporate in credit cards, the bar-code reader you are all too familiar with in supermarkets and of course the computer or tablets or smartphones that are popular nowadays because of their portability which will be very applicable and convenient also for the healthcare provider when they use this system.     4
