“SINING AT KALUSUGAN”

I have been doing social development work in health for almost 5 years now. Our main thrust is on leadership and governance and how it would help influence and drive the local health system to be able to address the needs of their community. Below is a figure representing the triangulate of intervention in a local health system.
In this triangulate, the gap still remains in the Demand Side which is actually the Health seeking behavior of the community. The only existing intervention in this dimension is the “Intensified Education Campaigns”. No other interventions are being done in this dimension.
With several consultations done among different stakeholders in the community, the idea came up of engaging the community in health dialogues. Looking at the situation, there had to be a way by which we could touch on every person’s “inner feel”.
In rural areas, the holding of fiestas and theatrical shows are very big events and were very much welcomed by the community. This became the jump off point of the idea of using the arts in encouraging health dialogue and promoting health.
The new idea is the formation of art guilds in municipalities which shall be trained on basic theatrical arts including music and drama. Alongside this are details of common health issues within their municipalities.
The main concept of “Sining at Kalusugan” will be to train a team knowledgeable on basic health concepts of basic health issues and go from barangay to barangay and engage the people in health dialogue using theatrical arts as opening salvos to capture their attention and touch their inner feel. This would be local people also living in these areas and are thus familiar with the language and culture of the locals.
This would hopefully complete the cycle of strengthening all three dimensions and eventually bring about vibrant and sustained local health systems. 3

ONLINE GROCERY DELIVERY…

Ever experienced waiting in grocery cashier lines longer than the actual time you spent getting your groceries from thesupermarket counters? It’s one of the greatest wastes of time especially on weekends when most family groceries are done. Time you could have spent more productively with other chores or quality time spent with the family.
Taking on the modern online shopping craze of netizens, local supermarkets may also take their share of this market. Now that more people are using the web for convenience of services already being offered online, this urban market is a sure capture.
Supermarkets could easily create an online shopping store where a person shopping could easily view products offered online and just click on the products he/she likes. An online customer account maybe created by a customer which comes with its own virtual shopping cart where items chosen are saved and equivalent prices computed. A history of previous transactions may also be kept in each persons account for most commonly purchased items for easy browsing and selection on next virtual shopping activity.
A customer also indicates preferred day and time of delivery. A minimal transaction fee maybe charged for the services rendered. Payment can then be made via credit card or via cash-on-delivery.Patient then just waits at home for the groceries ordered while doing otherchores or spending quality time with the family. 3

DAZZLE WITHOUT THE HASSLE…

As a kid, I’ve always been dazzled by the bright and colorful display of fireworks during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. I still am, but growing up it has dawned on me that the entire spectacle around the globe for a day is taking its toll on our environment. And over the years, in creating and spectating pyrotechnic displays, few seem to consider the rather obvious link between fireworks and air pollution. The result is an environmentally irresponsible form of entertainment.
In recent years, I noticed an increasing number of light shows put up by malls/parks in the metro. Though as colorful and amazing as some firework displays, they never seem to surpass the “awe” of an actual pyrotechnic show.
With the recent advancements in the digital light industry, it would be good to have a light show that could equate to an actual outdoor pyrotechnic display. It would be large in scale done outdoors with the sky as the actual screen and not an ordinary theatrical special-effects type that would keep the audience hanging and wanting for more. It would be a colossal 3D light show with the actual “pow” and “wow” minus the chemicals, minus the smoke, minus the pollution, leaving the audience dazzled without the hassle. 4
NU-12 MBAH by Sherwinism -DORA for Rural Health
A NEW BREED OF DORA EXPLORERS…

Category: Government Services
By: sherwinisms
DORA as most of us know, is that eight-year old Spanish girl who, while sporting her backpack, embarks on a new trip every episode in order to find something or help somebody while teaching the viewers a few Spanish words and phrases on the side. DORA’s backpack provides whatever DORA needs to complete her quests.
It is in this context that the Direct Obstetric Roving Attendant (DORA) Explorer Program is being conceptualized. The program aims to capacitate health service providers, particularly Rural Health Midwives in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA) municipalities to be able to render timely, quality health services especially Maternal and Child Health services to pregnant mothers in far-flung, isolated, island barangays and/or municipalities.
The fragmentation of the health care delivery system in the country, brought about by the process of decentralization with the implementation of the Local Government Code in 1991, resulted to the deterioration of primary health care services mostly in poor rural municipalities especially in GIDA’s. Local interface became a major hindering factor in delivering comprehensive primary health care services in these communities.
In 1999, the Department of Health (DOH) launched the Health Sector Reform Agenda (HSRA) in response to the post devolution health issues encountered. The identification of GIDAs was an approach to support the implementation of the Local Health Systems Reform in these remote, isolated and disadvantaged communities. But until now, already under the Kalusugang Pangkalahatan (KP)approach under President Aquino’s term, no clear policies and programs are being identified and implemented specifically for GIDAs. If at all, being carried out in GIDAs are approaches no different from those rolled-out in ordinary poor rural communities, only they are labeled “for GIDAs”.
Characterized generally by a lack of health facilities with low logistical support resulting to poor access and delivery of quality health services, an increase in Maternal and Infant mortalities were noted in GIDA municipalities which account for 7.5% of municipalities in the country and if not addressed drastically will hinder the country from reaching its Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target particularly on reducing the Maternal Deaths to 52 by year 2015.
The DORA Explorer Program will provide Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) training for all midwives in GIDA municipalities to increase their capacities in responding to Maternal and Newborn cases whileproviding them with “backpacks” fully equipped with irreplaceable medical equipment and supplies necessary for facilitating home deliveries. The program thus promotes home deliveries by Skilled Birth Attendants rather than Facility Based Deliveries, which have proven to be very difficult to implement in GIDA municipalities. Each GIDA municipality will have to be zoned properly with each zone having its assigned midwife. Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and/or Community Health Teams maybe tapped to do the mapping of pregnant women andtogether with the local Barangay Leaders arrange the transfers of a midwife to be able to answer on time to any deliveries within their areas. Special arrangements may also be made with PhilHealth for the accreditation of these midwives to have their Maternal and Newborn Care services rendered for free to PhilHealth member families. Most if not all of these mothers cannot access these services, if at all available, thus we bring the services to them.
GIDA municipalities were identified for the simple reason that they are very difficult areas and their needs more than the ordinary, and would thus have to be assessed separately. Special policies and more targeted programswould have to be formulated for these areas if the government is indeed serious in solving their problems, health or otherwise. 3

Samsung recently launched its newest addition to its Galaxy series… the Samsung Galaxy S 4… Watching the launch in NY live via live stream made it all the more exciting. Samsung just never fails to amaze me.
I have been using the Galaxy S 3 for almost a year now and it still never fails to amaze me and seeing the S 4 slowly being unveiled, application after application, I was just left in awe.
Then again there’s still room for some more innovative features. While a lot of new features were seen with the S 4, it was mostly for play and none for work. Having an office-based work, we are usually faced with presentations be it small or big groups. While I could already do most of my presentations in my S 3, during the actual meetings already, I still need to e-mail my presentation and retrieve it in a laptop, connect it to aprojector before I could actually present it. What if my Samsung Galaxy phone can directly project images in a wall for me to show? It could be presentations for work or of new pictures and videos shared with family and friends or games for personal fun and play.
Impossible? NOT… Amazing? YES… the S 4 just got better… the new SAMSUNG GALAXY S 5… 4

Summer is here again. Already we could feel the heat of the season. Even in the evenings the weather gets to be very humid during your usual night-out with friends, especially in open-air bars or while you are seated in non-aircon smoking areas. Sure there’s your favorite beer in sub-zero bottles or iced glasses, or your usual ice-blended cocktails, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a new treat?
A new summer cool treat which would blow your brains out… Alcohol based popsicle treats. Like the usual kiddie popsicles which we never get tired of, these would come in different colors and shades and of course in different flavors and alcohol based concoctions.
A truly fun way of beating these hot summer nights is with these cool summer fun treats… TIPSY POPS… now available at your favorite bars 4

VIRTUAL CARDIO-EXERCISE EXPERIENCE…

It is so hard to get back in shape. Getting on cardio machines and finding the right stimulus is very difficult. Sometimes the music does it and at other times not.
It would be good if in gyms, we would have cardio machines (treadmills, steppers, stationary bikes) in virtual rooms with 360-degree screens. While in treadmills for example, one could run or jog and choose the scene that he/she wants, simulating an actual outdoor jog or run. Another example is while riding stationary bikes, you are surrounded by scenery of your choice again simulating an actual ride or being in a pack of riders at the tour de france with you beating Lance Armstrong and drug<dope free hahaha>-free at that. This would surely be a very stimulating ride. <there cyclo computers with such feature doctor; some you tube videos of tdf could be adapted to PS>
Simulating an outdoor experience to stimulate the senses right in the comforts of a gym or your own home would truly be one hell of a calorie-burning cardio-exercise experience one could have. 3

DIRTY MONEY…

While the current Philippine banknotes are already treated with Bioguard technology which prevents bacteria it carries from multiplying, the fact still remains that it would carry bacteria. From the numerous people from which these banknotes were passed from hand to hand, it is a significant medium for the spread of infectious diseases among people.
And of course one the main hubs of these banknotes is the bank. Day in and day out, transactions deal with money. And it is quite surprising that in my forty years of existence, I have not seen of a bank with any hand sanitary dispensers which its customers could use after a transaction.
In the fight against the spread of infectious diseases, this is one area which the Department of Health might look at and tap for the provision of sanitary dispensers for the prevention of spread of infectious diseases. 3
