Easy to  Mount Grease Trap
Since I can remember that we used a grease trap in our kitchen sink, it has been a pain in the ass to install and remove it every time it needs to be cleaned or when it is full of grease already. It is really difficult to install and remove it, aside from the fact that is too unsanitary where as you unscrew its connecting pipe from the sink pipe, tendency is that some foul smelling liquid with grease would splash out. So I thought of a grease trap that instead of using a traditional screwable pipe, it should just use a hose connector with an easy to plug mechanism . Also, I recommend that instead of using traditional stainless steel  drum grease trap, it should be a plastic container that is transparent or translucent so that grease level inside the container can be easily monitored if full or not to avoid overflow spillage of the foul smelling grease. Also, this grease trap must be designed with handle, so that it could be easily carried (I have not seen a grease trap design with handles). This innovation to a grease trap should help lessen possibility of contact to the foul smelling liquid with grease, thereby lessening as well possibility of getting illness caused by the filthy liquid and of course makes the grease trap installation-removing process easier. 4

Anti Car Theft: Car Immobilizer Kit
Nowadays, car theft is really rampant. But with the technology we have today, such crimes could easily be prevented, lessened, and the criminals could easily be caught. My concept of an anti-carnapping-anti car theft kit is that a car should be installed with the following devices:
1.       RF (Radio Frequency) ID as tracking device connected to a GPS
2.       Hidden micro camera remotely activated
3.       Remotely activated circuit breaker (acts as mobile number)

The system will work in such a way that whenever a car has been carnapped it could be easily located/tracked using the RF ID via GPS. Its locations can be shared to the police authorities, where synchronized apprehension will take place. First, the car can be stopped via calling the number of the circuit breaker of the car to activate it, then the car will then be automatically put to stop and all doors will be locked. Of course this will happen when the police are already in its strategic locations to apprehend the carnappers. Also, the hidden camera can remotely take pictures as well anytime  by just calling its number since it also acts like a mobile phone and automatically sends the pictures to the owner's mobile phone / caller. If a car is packed with such security system or just by letting the public know that such anti car theft system is available, I believe the idea of carnapping could be eliminated. People would hesitate to dare do such crime.4

Low Cost Film Equipment Rental
When I was in college, I used to be requested to help in production sets for film projects of my friends. Usually they would ask me to help them in the technical aspects of the set design and in executing the film itself. They were only students and film projects can really be costly especially when it would require some film equipment to be rented for the cameras to achieve certain effects and shots. These equipment usually are dollies w/ tracks, lights, cranes, and mounting devices . In these projects, they would always ask my help to reduce their cost by doing DIYs and improvised equipment that would mimic the capabilities of the rented equipment, such as dollies and some mounting devices. With that experience I thought of conceptualizing an affordable equipment rental services that would mostly cater to students doing film projects, and  to indie film makers who are really budget constraint. The equipment that will be rented out will be fabricated here in the Philippines such that it will be designed to mimic what the original imported equipment do. There would be recycled components as well for every equipment/device to keep the cost low. I haven't come across a business concept like this, as if there is, we could have resorted to cheap equipment rental similar to this, way back in college – I have checked recently, there is still none.

NU12 #7. Serendipity walk – take a walk along a busy street near you. List down as many business opportunities you can think of. Just list down. – Kevin Toledo

Serendipity Walk at Pablo Ocampo (Vito Cruz, near St. Scholastic's College)
Vito Cruz is a very busy street where a lot of establishments are located such as fast food restaurants, print shops,  internet café's, laundry shops, grocery, 24-hour convenience store. Most of these establishments cater to the student populations of the schools situated in the area (St. Scholastica's College & DLSU) and also to the residents/households in the area. But still as I take the serendipity walk, I realized that establishments such as the following that I listed down must also be put-up.

Existing establishments:
- Jollibee
- Ministop (24-hour convenience store)
- Copytrade (photocopying shops)
- Dexact (printshop)
- Computer shops
- Grocery
- fishball/kwek-kwek stand
- Baliwag Lechon Manok
- Barbecue stand
- Milk tea stand
- McDonalds
- Automotive repair shops
- Fruit and vegetable carts

Additional recommendable establishment to be put up in the area:

* Barber Shop / Hair Salon – the nearest is at bench fix Taft which is a bit pricey
Pet Grooming Center - there are a lot of pet owners in our neighborhood but there is no pet grooming center
* Veterinary Clinic – there is even no veterinary center in the area. I believe there should be one.
* Pharmaceutical Drug Store – Drugstore is in the Zobel Roxas area
* Coffee Shop – Coffee shops are located in Taft, there should be a nearby coffee shop to cater to the art students of St. Benilde in Vito Cruz. 3.5

NU12 #8. What pisses you off at the mall? What do you suggest? – Kevin Toledo

Open escalators

I have been pissed off how mall developers and owners have been failing to consider enough safety measures in putting up escalators, considering that most mall goers are families with kids, and there have been many cases related to escalator accidents. Personally, I think that there should be some sort of polycarbonate/glass enclosure in the escalator railings to prevent accidents of falling from it. Further, signs of "watch for your head" is not enough in certain escalator placements. It cannot 100% assure that putting such precautions/signs would prevent a certain accident could happen. By putting up these glass/polycarbonate enclosures, it will surely eliminate possibility of a person riding it from getting its neck broken or from falling from it. 4

Security Checks

I must admit that Security checks at mall entrance pisses me off. The guards are doing it just for the sake of doing it (masabi lang), while some are already harassing. Most especially, it really pisses me off that long queues are made by these time consuming security checks. I suggest that there should be just a scanning device with less human intervention. This scanning equipment would be placed in the mall entrances where people could smoothly pass by. This scanning equipment would already be equipped with detectors that could detect certain shapes pertaining to deadly weapons such as knifes, guns and explosives. With this equipment, long queues could be avoided and it will assure more security than that of the manual security check method.

NU 12 (3, 4, 6, 7, 12) - Arlo Cristobal

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

NU12 #3 - Professionalism – new work, methods, practices: Gaining From Gaming (Arlo Cristobal)
I have a cousin who had a very promising childhood. He consistently garnered high grades during his elementary years, but that was until he became addicted to computer games. He still plays games and I must say that he is really good at it. When he is playing, there is a high level of concentration and focus that you wish he can apply to his studies instead.
Instead of losing hope in him, why not just monetize his passion? Game developers abroad spend a lot of money testing their products and hire players to identify bugs and other areas of improvement of the game. Outsourcing isn't new in our country and we also have a number of gaming aficionados here. With cheaper labor, why not just employ my cousin and other folks with similar passion to be game testers here in the Philippines. It can be a lucrative job since there are a lot of game developing companies who release high-end games on a regular basis. Instead of them wasting money in computer games, they will be doing it for a profit. The set-up can also be a work from home situation to cut cost on office space. They will be provided with a budget for computers and reimbursed internet bills. The team would only have to meet once a week to talk about test results and provide updates and feedbacks. This way, they will be exposed to an office scene, while still being able to enjoy the games that they play. To add, they can make game reviews or even publish a magazine where they can write their experiences. <game testing for game addicts 4

NU12 #4 - New processes at work, study: More Fun in the Office (Arlo Cristobal)
Getting burned out from work is a common issue among employees. This is the reason why a lot of companies spend heavily in work-life balance and teambuilding efforts. As an alternative, the new work process I'd like to propose is a monthly activity session that may or may not be related to work. This can bring vigor and enthusiasm back to employees and they will also have something to look forward to.

Examples of activities could be cycling, swimming, jogging or even a simple food tasting retreat. Each month, a group of people will give a list of activities which the employees can choose from and vote. The activity with the most votes will be selected for the month and the team will dedicate one day for that activity. If there are budget concerns, the activity can be a simple one like dry cooking in the pantry or board games day. This will keep employee morale high and will lighten up the mood in the office from time to time. It will also promote team camaraderie for better collaboration amongst teammates. And finally, for the employees, it will allow them to recharge and maybe, for some, discover a hobby that they might enjoy doing more often. Some of the activities I can think of include: cycling - those who have bikes can bring and share their bikes or the company can pair up with a bike rental facility, jogging - no expenses required, but a good venue has to be selected, actual photography session - those who have DSLR cameras can bring theirs and a group of folks will share their knowledge. The types of activities for this new process can only be bounded by the imagination, creativity and resourcefulness of the team. 3
NU12 #6 - New business ideas: An Eye for the Eye (Arlo Cristobal)
Eye detector for sleepy driver - A lot of car accidents happen because of drivers dozing off on the road. It's a very alarming concern and more and more of my friends had admitted to have dozed off while driving from work or from a late night out. This gave me an idea to develop a product that detects eye behavior that is attached to an alarm. The detector would monitor the eyes in real time, and then connected to an alarm to wake up the driver when the eyes close. Eye detection is not a new technology. It is already being used in mobile phones to check if the eyes are still looking at the screen. With the price of modern cars, this additional functionality would have a negligible cost to car companies but can be very profitable to the seller of the device when patented. This safety feature may even be eventually required to be fitted in cars, much like airbags and seatbelts. 3 (but some of those who sleep while driving are like fishes - they sleep with their eyes wide open)

NU12 #7 - Serendipity walk – take a walk along a busy street near you. List down as many business opportunities you can think of. Just list down. (Arlo Cristobal)
Mckinley Road
·         Quick drink stop for joggers – McKinley hill is filled with joggers at night. From experience, those who jog don’t enter establishments to buy drinks since they are sweaty and are wearing exercise clothes. One business opportunity is to have a small booth set-up along the road, but still near the establishments, where joggers pass-by. This will be very tempting to joggers and there will be a constant and targeted set of customers during the “jogging hours.”
·         Healthy options – A lot of hole-in-the-wall food stalls in McKinley are unhealthy (fried food, carb-loaded meals, sugar-rich drinks). Back in Ateneo Loyola, there was a small store that sells healthier food choices priced at par with those present in McKinley. This is a good opportunity to sway people who would choose healthier food given the choice and similar budget.
·         Jollibee delivery – This opportunity is a simple one and suitable for me. Every day, I pass by Jollibee along C5 on my way to work. Since there is no Jollibee anywhere near McKinley, there is a high demand for Jollibee products from my coworkers. I can take advantage of this situation by texting some of my friends who might be interested in ordering in Jollibee. I can then do it for them when I pass by Jollibee and just charge them a modest commission. 3
NU12 #12 - Business opportunities you can think of, just list down (Arlo Cristobal)
·         Electricity harvester on a busy road/pedestrian - We have solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heat and other new emerging sustainable sources of electricity. All these are difficult to harvest and takes time to locate. Wind, water dam and geothermal sources of energy translate energy sources to kinetic energy in the form of turbines. These turbines, in effect, are used to generate and store electricity. Another source of kinetic energy that is available is our bodies and the vehicles we drive. This kinetic energy sources are quite abundant in busy roads and pedestrian.
The process on how to harvest this energy is based on a similar concept: use the movement driven by the source to spin the turbines. One simple way to do this is to place turbines underground in the form of road bumps. The turbines can be designed in such a. way that vehicles would hardly notice their presence in the road. The same goes with busy pedestrians. The stairs or walkways can be fitted with a smaller version of the system. Electricity generated from these systems can be used to power traffic lights and street lights at night.
·         Heated vendo machine - Saying that there are a lot of commuters in the Philippine is an understatement. During rush hours, MRT and LRT terminals are swarmed by commuters, and a lot of these commuters are hungry. Small food stalls can be very profitable, but their capacity to serve customers may be limited. Worse, potential customers who see long lines may be discouraged to buy since they want to go home early as well. To solve this problem, a vendo machine can be placed instead. It will be heated and there will be a kitchen at e back to refill the vending slots when food items are bought. There can be several payment panels fitted with vending windows or slots where the customers can see the products. 4

 7. SERENDIPITY WALK

Living along a busy highway and not inside a subdivision or village is something you can very much enjoy because of its practicality. You just have to go outside your house's gate and you will be able to see what you need or the services you may want 24 hours a day 7 days a week. However, looking outside and taking a short walk along Quirino Highway corner Tandang Sora Ave in Quezon City, there are still some business opportunities I've seen even if there's an SM Hypermarket nearby. Some of them are listed below:

        a. A Good Old Bakery / Bakeshop - for hot pandesal in the morning
        b. Barbershop - Salons are for the girls,,, :)
        c. Massage Clinic - to unwind and relax
        d. Franchise of other popular fast food restaurants specially Mc Donalds and KFC
        e. Laundry Shop
        f.  Gererika or The Generics Drugstore (only Mercury Drug is available)
        g. Medical / Dental Clinic
        h. Carwash
        I.  Car Mechanic Shop (Talyer)
        j.  Appliance Store / Repair Shop

1. NEW ATTITUDE / PARADIGM

Thinking of something that I have been used to doing and is willing to change for the better is my habit and thinking of the purpose of Credit Cards. Honestly, credit cards are very practical in case of emergencies of not having cash and ATM machines are not readily available, and specially when you are travelling from different places here and abroad. Unfortunately, I have overused the credit cards issued to me by local banks, though I am not in bad debts and able to pay my total amount dues on time, still I consider this habit inappropriate because of the following reasons I will enumerate below.

First, I have been used to buying stuffs that I do not need and just want. I have become an impulsive buyer that I always buy something that easily catches my attention without thinking the reason or the need behind it.

Second, I have tend to buy things more than my monthly salary can afford because of their installment promos plus the buy now pay later options. I have even budgeted my future earnings instead of what I currently have. The saying that goes something like, "don't count the chicks until the eggs are hatched" was very much neglected. I have even thought of buying stuffs even before I received my hard earned money. I ended up working long hours just to earn the needed amount to payoff my credit card bills.

Lastly, I allowed my friends to use my credit card and forget the first rule that this is supposed to be for personal use only. I ended up paying for their bills to meet the due date because they tend to pay late even if I remind them on time. One of my very big mistakes which I will definitely change for the better.

Now, I would like to ensure that my credit card privileges provided by local banks because of my good track record and good credit standing will be used responsibly. I will use it only when needed and in case of emergency. Use it only to buy the things that i need and not those that I only want. Will prevent myself from being an impulsive buyer. Use credit cards for travels here and abroad for safety purposes only.(lost of wallet while in transit etc.) Most probably, I will only lend my credit card privilege to close friends who have good track records and were able to pay on time without me reminding him/her and only for emergency purposes. Finally, I will practice the saying I mentioned above: "Count the chicks only until the eggs are hatched" to prevent overspending. As the saying goes, "don't bite more than you can chew". 3

12. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES I CAN THINK OF

        a. Coffee Shop with Professional Photo Studio
        b. Coffee Shop and Bar - Coffee Shop in the Morning / Bar at night
        c. Sizzling Restaurant along Quirino Highway
        d. Dance Studio with Theater Workshop

        f.  Massage Clinic and Spa for Men and Women
        g. Pastry Shop
        h. Online RTW store

And so I walked along T. Morato Avenue with all its lights and many businesses lining up both sides of the street. The street has been a witness to many restaurants coming and going. Only quite a few have been able to stay and continue its operation and satisfy the demanding clientele that frequents this place.
Some business ideas that came to mind are the following:
1.       Valet Express: Parking Space Rental
2.       Dessert Place
3.       Street Maintenance Contractor
4.       T. Morato Website
5.       Flower and Gift Shop

NU 7: Serendipity walk - Jennifer Liquete

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Location: Tandang Sora (McDo side)

The busy street of Tandang Sora is always filled with commuters (employees and students from nearby schools), jeepney drivers, tricycle drivers and residents from neighboring shanties. Everyday, the commuters and the drivers are tired after their long day at work and school. In addition to their stress, commuters always have to wait for their turn to get a ride while drivers are eager to finish their shift so that they can rest and relax. Residents from neighboring shanties, on the other hand, are either looking for some means to earn money (ex. catch a cab or guide a car from getting out of the parking) or searching for something to interest them.

Since most of the population, if not all, have low disposable income, small businesses with low cost and sells at a low price are the most feasible option.

Business opportunities at Tandang Sora:

-                      Beat the heat with ice scramble, iced candy, popsicles and halo-halo!
What would be a better and cheaper way to cool themselves during a hot day in Manila? For the consumers, these are within their budget and after a long day, it is a cheap treat for them to refresh and relax. For the business, these cool treats are easy to make and have minimal costs. The only alternative for these are McDo's and Jollibee’s sundaes which will cost them twice or thrice more than the ice scramble, iced candy, popsicles, and halo-halo.
-                      Pinoy Cravings: P5 per stick of fishballs, squidballs, isaw, kikiam, kwek-kwek; P10 per stick of hotdog; P10 per cup of gulaman or buko juice
Fishballs, squidballs, isaw, kwek-kwek and hotdogs are among the top Filipino cravings. This type of turo-turo is very irresistible for Filipinos, especially those who are hungry after a tiring day. It is a cheap way to satisfy the hunger and craving of the commuters, drivers and residents from the shanties. Gulaman and buko juice, on the other hand, are Filipino favorites and these are cheap drinks to quench their thirst or if just to freshen them up. These products have a certain characteristic that once you see their carts, you are tempted to buy even just one.
Lastly, aside from being cheaper than the other food establishments (McDo, Jollibee and 7-11), these products are more convenient for the commuters and drivers. Waiting period is only a minute compared to the 5-7 minutes ordering and receiving process in the other food establishments. Convenience is a key factor because this market is always on-the-go. They do not have time to spare because they need to get in line for their ride (for commuters) and to leave when the ride is full (for drivers).
-                      Recreational Activities: Computer shop/gaming station and videoke
There has always been a high demand for computer shops and gaming stations from students. It is their way of escaping reality and having fun. I noticed that in all gaming stations and computer shops, the level of disposable income is not a limitation. Students always have an allocated budget for gaming and this is not yet tapped in Tandang Sora. To operate at a low cost, second-hand computers can be used. Videoke, on the other hand, is one of the most common past-time of adults with low disposable income. A small location with one TV and microphone is already sufficient. Customers will also have an option to dine and drink while in the place. It will have a low price per song and cheap food and drinks that will entice the market to enter the shop.
-                      Small Clinics: x-ray, pediatrics, obstetrics, dental, EENT, minor surgery (ex. Removal of cysts, circumcision, wounds)
Health will always be a concern for everyone, even those without budget. For those in the lower income bracket, it is important that they find an economical clinic because they will not be able to afford the usual high rates. Currently, there aren’t any low-budget clinics in the area even though there is a high traffic of lower C, D and E. This creates a business opportunity for small clinics that will provide common and vital services such as x-ray, pediatrics, obstetrics, dental, EENT and minor surgeries including removal of cysts, circumcisions, and treatment of wounds. To operate at a low cost, the clinic can buy second-hand equipment that are no longer being used by hospitals. For the doctors/consultants/specialists, the business can recruit medical students/interns that are looking for more exposure and experience in the medical field. It will be a mutual benefit because they will gain more experience from these clinics and at the same time, the business will have lower costs because these are not yet high-level specialists or doctors. For safety purposes, one senior can be hired overlook the performance of the medical students/interns. 3

Walking through Calle Estacion in Bgy.Pio del Pilar , you would see several condominiums, a home depot store & car dealer shop, in addition to the PNR station on the other side.
If they utilize the creek area and build a 2 level steel parking to ease traffic cause by the mmda pay parking, then they would have more customers for pay parking , plus other business establishments such as:
