NU6 by LK, Sell items on TV; directly

NU6: Sell items on TV; directly
By M080037

Walk around malls today and you'll discover that Internet TV is now here. Appliance stores showcase a Sony TV with Internet capability using Google's Android Operating system. Recently, Steve Jobs' biography reveals that one of his visions is to revolutionize the TV the way he did the computer, the music player, and the mobile phone. Specifically, Jobs wanted iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and iPod to be seamlessly connected to the TV. He wanted it simple, elegant, and, ofcourse, luxurious. You can watch videos stored in your iPad or MacBook, listen to music in your iPod's iTunes, while your AppleTV is connected to a set of wireless speakers.

It is exciting how this idea will change how watching TV is done. It's interesting how Internet providers will adapt to this technology. Needless to say, to watch videos on Internet TV, you will need a speedy connection. Otherwise, you will just get impatient waiting for the video stream to finish buffering content.

Apple TV only lets you buy movies from Netflix or from apple store. You can watch it on any TV that can be hooked up to the apple TV box. Or, you can by a big ass Apple LCD and hook your apple TV box to it. How will Apple redefine how TV viewing is done? For now, the technology that is here is Google TV; which is what Sony has running underneath their device.

You can hook up Cable, Satellite, DVD, HD DVD, Xbox, and other gaming consoles to Sony's Google TV the same way these devices can be hooked up to a regular TV. You can pull up multiple screens in case you need to read about a topic or tweet about a movie you're watching. Well, you can do that better by having your mobile device, netbook, or tablet while you watch; seemingly less complicated than pushing lots of controls to do the same. But it would be entirely different if Google TV automatically knows and adds the channel, cable provider, and the movie that I am watching. Example, you are watching CNN's "Revealed" feature of Mr. Arroyo or Manny Pacquio, and wanted to tweet about it and post it to your wall. If Google TV already adds the excerpt and the link or channel to your tweet, it would be real sweet, won't it? For now, Google TV doesn't do that yet. That is something they will have to work out. People would rather tweet using their phones or laptops than fiddle with the remote's tiny qwerty keyboard.

Another upside is you can Google and look at maps using Google TV. No GPS on the TV set, there's very little use for it; but Google TV knows your location based on your Internet connection.

A map on the TV is great; you can look up the world while watching a feature of Rome's conquests. You can even search the net while watching; check out Wikipedia, or check out the name of Bond's new leading lady.

A lot of men get caught in the couch watching TV about 20-30 hours per week; about four hours or more a day; maybe even more on Sundays. While watching, your mind flies around lot's of topics and interests from book titles, to food, to gadgets.

One of the features that is lacking in Google TV as of now is an Applications Store. The convergence of TV and the Internet will make online stores more profitable. Imagine this: People's interest is spiked by a commercial, a link is shown at the bottom to fire up an application developed for your online store. The Application saves your credit card information and delivery address so you can buy with least resistance. The Application showcases your products neatly and can be tiled, sorted, reviewed, etc. Much like Amazon but is inside a Google TV App that can be downloaded for free. Here is an opportunity for the neophyte pinoy entrepreneur; quite a new business idea, because this effectively creates a new market that anyone can tap into. You can sell gadgets from any store, hire a logistics service from XEND or DHL, get a payment gateway from BDO or any other merchant and you have your own store that's on GoogleTV. Post a few blog reviews, some product sites elsewhere, participate in 2 or 3 forums and you get quite a good ranking in Google.com's Philippine site searches. You can be the next millionaire without spending too much because you can get products on consignment. 4

New Idea – Process/System Improvement by LK

New Idea – Process/System Improvement by M080037

I find that it is becoming harder to browse through the NUIdea Share Blog. The more posts added there, the harder it is to read. My proposal is to add Categories or topics. Categories, in blogger are Labels.
To better navigate the Blog and for the blog to be relevant to the current class, I suggest the following Labels.

1.     New Paradigm
2.     Habits and Routine
3.     New Processes
4.     New Products
5.     Business Ideas
6.     Serendipity Walk
7.     Rants
8.     Announcements
9.     My Ideas

Add Labels as you please and Posts can be added into one or all the labels.
(There are labels.  My current concern is to label the assignments and the sudents submission in the label.  But that is good suggestion)

Implementing the Categories

Unfortunately, adding categories is not that straightforward. You will have to add a gadget called Labels to the side bar.

1.     First, log in to your blogger account and select Layout. Use the updated interface to have better options.

2.     You will be directed to the Layout Designer. Choose where you prefer the Categories Menu in the layout should be and Click Add a Gadget. In my case, I selected the topmost of the menu set on the right side.

3.     After clicking "Add a Gadget" a window will pop up asking you what Gadget you want to Add. Find Labels near the bottom of the pop up screen.

4.     Click the + button to add the Gadget. Blogger will prompt you to configure the Labels Gadget.

5.     Change the name Lables to Topics (or whatever you think is best);  Select Show all labels; Sort by Frequency,  and display as List.

6.     You will see in the Layout Designer that the Gadget is added.

7.     Click Save Arrangement to finish. You should see your categories already.

Posts

Some posts are too long and it quickly discourages further reading especially when the post is not at confluence with the reader's interests and mood. A page break or a summary can be added so that the reader can click read more if further reading is needed. You can do this when composing or editing the post.

1.     When editing the post, select a line where the summary should end and click "Insert Jump Break"

2.     This allows you to trim a post smaller. A clickable link will be added at the bottom named "Read More"

Layout

The Layouts of the Blogs (EntrepShare and NUIdeaShare) do not seem to work well for the contents posted in it. Browsing the posts using Firefox and Chrome show that contents overlap the side navigation area. This can be resolved by using the Template Editor:

1)   Go to the blogger dashboard, pull down the edit menu and select Template.

2)   Select Customize Blog

3)   Select Layout

4)   Select the Right Aligned Layout.

5)   Click Apply to Blog to publish the changes.
Documents

Syllabus and Documents that are very important can be uploaded to slideshare too even if they are in PDF or Docx. It works the same way by posting the embed code.

Copy the Embed Code from Slideshare, then paste it on the composer (make sure it's in HTML mode and not is Compose mode)

Here is an embed code posted in HTML mode.

(You will upload your SR slideshare and you will send me your embed code for publication.  Thanks)
You can switch back to Compose mode to check alignments. You can choose to align the embedded document to the center or to the left.

Check the Blog to see if the Document was published.

There are several advantages to this. First, The Document style does not change. Second, The document can easily be downloaded and printed, as most people find it hard to internalize materials while reading from the screen.  I am one of those people, no matter how tech savvy, still find it so hard to internalize a reading material. I need paper and highlighter and a note-taking device.

I am quite inspired by your Blog driven class instruction that I wanted to start my own blog. I will start a blog about technology and how it is shaping business, marketing, and lifestyles. Thank you. I hope this qualifies as a New Idea submission under topics: Professionalism – new work, methods, practices. No, not under what pisses you off. The Blog is a great idea because materials are always available to anyone, anytime, anywhere. It just needs the Six Thinking Hats Method: Specifically the Black, Yellow, and Green hats. 3.5

NU6: New energy source by LK

NU4 – New products / product improvements
New energy source
M080037
I have read about inductive charging technology where you charge your phone by leaving it on a mat like Power Mat. It's quite a cool idea and I wondered: can this be done on a larger scale?

The world is having trouble finding an efficient alternative energy source. Ten years ago, we consider Nuclear energy as a bad energy source due to its waste, now we consider it as the cleanest, most environment friendly source.

Solar power is one of the cleanest alternative sources of energy but it's just too expensive and space consuming to create solar panels as big as Luzon to power the whole Philippines.

But here's an idea: The power mat works by transferring energy wirelessly through electro-magnetic fields. If a country, or a group of Asian countries led by Japan constructs power plants in the outer space, and somehow beat the energy wirelessly to receptors in regional power plants, then that might be a viable source of alternative energy.

Of course further research especially on the effect of magnetic fields on our brains is needed. We do not want zombies and perverts walking the streets of Asia in exchange for clean alternative energy source.

Does it work?    3.0  Can you apply this on your own?  Thanks

NU1 - IT Services Outsourcing IT department on Steroids by M080037

NU1 - IT Services Outsourcing – IT department on Steroids
M080037

Companies in the Philippines consider Information System as a necessary part of their business. From novelty shops to supermarkets, IT has taken a major role in operations. Most medium to large-scale companies have IT departments dedicated to the organization. Bigger companies even have IT departments dedicated to a division or channel. These dedicated IT departments are in charged of maintaining some system essential to the company’s operation. These companies rely on talented employees not just to maintain the integrity of the system and its data, but also to maintain confidentiality.

Last month, I went to PhilHealth to get a cheque. As early as 10am, there is a long queue already. It says on a bond paper, in Pentel Pen ink, posted near one table: System is Down. You see wires all over the place leading to the server room located a room behind the cashier’s cubicle. Last Julay, I am at an LTO outlet to renew my license. I was almost done when the main server in the Head office went down. No one, in the whole Philippines, can transact. The inspector announced that everyone should just come back the next day for the printed card. I opted to wait because I overheard that the main server would be restarted. In small offices, just like in San Juan, computers are in bad shape, often infected with a virus or that the drivers are missing. In some companies I visited, even with an IT department present, workstations are still in bad shape, let alone servers, websites, and systems.

Social Media and Online Marketing are now given considerable focus by both small and large companies. I wonder how these small-medium companies, whose computers are in bad shape, compete with its local competition; let alone worldwide. Businesses need a top-caliber IT team to compete with bigger organizations. These Multi-National companies have systems to monitor every aspect of their business. These systems give them critical data to support their decisions. Where will these companies who fail to implement a decision support system if the world market becomes fully competitive. Right now, this is already being felt. How long will these companies (those without computerized systems) struggle with hunches and gut feel?

With adequate skills and enough manpower, I believe I can transform those companies into a fairly advanced company in terms of IT resources. By setting up a “Nerd Herd” that provides services to these companies.
A small group of IT professionals will serve as a virtual IT department for 2-3 companies. They will implement the same standards: Brand of computers, OS Version, Software version, Printers, Network structure, etc. This allows them to know the problems as they arise. They can solve the problem with confidence. With the help of remote control services like LogMeIn and TeamViewer, these IT professionals can troubleshoot computers from anywhere in the world provided that they have an internet connection.
Another group of IT professionals can take care of systems implementation for SAP, Website Development, etc. These professionals need not do the implementation themselves, they will just serve as Project Managers.
Computers and Servers can be leased from the company offering the service. This allows the IT Professionals to quickly respond to emergencies.
These services can be offered for a fee. Companies can benefit from the expertise. While confidentiality is an issue, a contract can be signed to ensure that confidentiality will be maintained. Trusting an employee with your data is almost the same as trusting a company via a contract. This is an Idea I have been thinking of for years: an IT Department for whole industries.  Cloud computing? 4

NU6 - Mobile Car Maintenance Service by LK

NU2 - Mobile Car Maintenance Service
M080037

I often find myself feeling immobilized when I have to bring my car for maintenance but I have a lot to get done at work. This is especially true if you have to wear different hats for Graduate School, Manager, Presenter, Father, Husband, etc.
Cars cost a lot and they need maintenance in order for it to run smoothly. Processing papers for registration, and insurance can prove to be a pain. At times, Air-Conditioning system needs to be cleaned; it takes the whole day for some models to get this done. Oil and other Fluids need to be routinely changed. Belts and other parts need to be replaced. Let’s face it, there are people who just don’t care about these things. They leave it to aggravate over time and often end up with a badly damaged engine, often leading to a low resale value.
Maintenance is costly and at times risky for the uninitiated. Without maintenance, we risk damage to the engine. Indeed, it’s better to do maintenance and prevent damage than to do repairs. Engine damage needs to be carefully analyzed, and it takes an expert to adequately address the issue. Not all motor shops have the expertise and engine problems manifest differently in different car make and models. At times, mechanics work around a problem, giving us the impression that the engine is repaired, only to find out that the problem reemerged and has worsened. We risk paying even more when the motor shop experiment with your car. As for parts, it’s always cheaper to purchase directly from the retail store, given that you know what to order.
Maintenance needs consistency and diligence, as well as knowledge or, better yet, expertise. Engine problems need to be described properly for the mechanic to know exactly what he has to do, and thus, again, we need to be familiar with the inner workings of the different systems in our automobile. But often, we do not have the time, nor the expertise to perform these things.
A mobile service team adept in maintenance and repair as well as accomplishing necessary paper work can be deployed. Car owners apply as members to this “prestige” club giving them the benefits such as Car Registration Services, Towing, Car Detailing, maintenance, upgrades, and Insurance papers processing. You enroll your car to this group and enjoy the perks and prestige that come with it.
A monthly premium fee will include Engine Maintenance Services. This service can be done at your home or office. An expert mechanic will go to your office and perform the maintenance. Since head office tracks the maintenance and keeps easily worn-out parts on stock, the crew will bring the needed parts and install them for you.
Incase your car needs to be brought to the shop, a GPS tracking devise is given to you. You will be given a Web-Based monitoring page that will inform you about all the necessary details you need as well as the suggested upgrades, or replacement. This gives you the assurance that your car is very well maintained.
For those who wanted to do custom upgrades, the suggested upgrades  will be shown in the web panel. The team will do the research for you and give you options for upgrades. The team will supervise engine upgrades and registration. All you need to do is focus on what really matters, driving your well maintained car as you go to work.
In addition, the prestige factor of being associated to this “cool” group will attract more car owners. Partnerships with Honda Club, and the like will give added benefits. The team will seek endorsement from car manufacturers for added credibility. 4
