Transportation in Metro Manila is probably one of the worst in the region. Despite the availability of Metro Rail Transit and Light Railway Transit, the jeepneys, buses, taxicabs, tricycles and even pedicabs have congested the thoroughfares in the city. The taxicabs are the most convenient form of transportation however, it is associated with a high price. To minimize cost to riders, I suggest that taxicabs should operate only within a city and color coded according to the city it will be serving. Like for example, if the taxicab is assigned to Makati City, it can assume the color blue and will only pick up passengers travelling within Makati City. Then, the flag down rate will be lesser since the taxicab will just travel within a short distance. Same thing can be done in Quezon City which can assume the color yellow and likewise accepts only passengers travelling within that area. For passengers who will travel between cities, another group of taxicabs will cater to this group and can assume the color white. This scheme will also lighten the traffic since lesser number of cabs need to traverse the main thoroughfares of the city. 4

Cervical cancer remains the most common cause of death among women with female reproductive tract malignancy in the country. In developed countries, it has been downgraded to third most common primarily due to widespread use of Papanicolau smear which is not being practiced much locally. The good news is we can prevent this type of cancer by having an HPV vaccination. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is believed to be the main cause of cervical cancer and it is acquired through sexual intercourse. Though most of the HPV infections are transient and can regress spontaneously, some may be persistent and high risk types which may transform the normal cervical cells to malignant cells. However, noble it might be, the HPV vaccines available now covers only 2 types of HPV and that it can only prevent about 70% of cervical cancers. There is still a remaining 30% chance of having the tumor. Thus, it is now in the process of adding additional types for a coverage of at least 80-90%.

 Despite the use of this vaccine in the female population, its use in the males remain controversial since we really dont know who among the males harbor the virus and if indeed they are carriers, is vaccination effective enough to control the carriers? I would suggest determination of the HPV virion in the blood or seminal fluid of males to determine their infectivity. How? I will still try to figure it out since our researchers haven't figure it out as yet. 4

Traffic in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) is probably one of the worst in Asia if not in the world. According to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the average speed of vehicles traversing the most used road like Efipanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) is pegged at 20-30 km/hr during rush hour. Several schemes have been implemented to address this problem however, most of them never worked. The increasing volume of vehicles has also added to the big burden of traffic.

In some parts of the world where land area is small and roads are narrow, they have created fly-overs or underground passages to minimize the traffic as has been done also in Metro Manila. Others, like Singapore has commissioned that only one vehicle is allowed per household hence their mass transport has been an excellent alternative if you want to go places. However, this strategy is difficult to implement here because a lot of Filipinos want more than one car in their belonging. The widening of roads has been done to ease up traffic in some areas but bottle-necked roads leading to these widened roads just complicated the recurring problem. My proposed alternative to this perennial problem is the creation of an airconditioned motorcycle. Since we live in a tropical country, going to the office early in the morning with so much sweat is not appealing. Hence, the aircon motorcycle can ease up traffic without the inconvenience of walking, sweating and getting late as well as the hassles that we encounter having the 4-wheeled cars. 3

Our sight seems to be the most important among the five senses. With it, we can see things, the environment around us and appreciate what God has created for us. So that, both young and old alike patronize the optical shop for better eyesight. However, going to this shop located in the malls is becoming a tall order. Like for example, my daughter and I went to one of the well known optical shop. My daughter went there ahead of me so she can have her eyes refracted. She called up the attention of the sales lady five times already and yet nobody is minding her. When I arrived at the optical shop, I asked immediately if they have a number for clients and they said they have but I realized that number is only for clients who wants to have refraction which my daughter is supposed to be getting. It was only then that the sales lady got her name and gave her a number for the refraction.

A system for taking care of clients should be put in place in these establishments especially when there is a heavy flow of customers like during sale, weekends and holidays. They should have sales ladies assigned to individual needs like to those clients who are just "window shopping", those who are looking for shades, those who want contact lenses, those wanting reading glasses only and those who are for refraction and wanting corrective glasses. In such a way, the flow of customers will be smoother and avoids heavy queuing. 3
