"A nutrition and consumption application"
Overweight and health issues are an increasingly problem today; also more and more people are becoming more conscious about the right nutrition. An application registering the amount of calories burned and the nutrition consumed could be really helpful for both overweight people and people who just want to make sure they are getting the right nutrition according to their lifestyle.
I have seen some apps on smart phones with calories counters, however since people all have different bodies and combustion I thought that this app could easily be improved so it actually calculates the exact combustion during the day. The application would go with a little device would be like a "pulse watch", except smaller you can attach it anywhere on your bracelet or on your watch. It would then transmit the heart rate to the smartphone via for instance blue tooth and it would then be possible to get an exact calculation of the calories burned. This little device you can wear all day if you want, This way you can easily compare the amount of calories compared towards the calories consumed and there bye see if you gained weight or lost weight. You can also easily see if you ate the right nutrition or if you are missing something.
-       Type in personal information, weight, goal, height,
-       Register the food you eat (through a comprehensive online list you can access all ingredients, and even ready to of. dishes)
-       You can get suggested meals with the right nutrition for you and the right amount.
-       You do not have to register work out like in other apps. The amount of calories burned will be automatically registered in your phone.
-       The barcode on some food-products can be scanned for easy registration
-       You have a progress graph
-       You can easily see if you do not get the right nutrition, for instance if you are missing some vitamins.
-       Work out suggestions/ programs: For those who need inspiration or tips on how often, what kind of exercise etc.
Seeing how many calories you have burned in comparison to have many you have consumed will get people motivated. The app needs to be neat and simple, so the users do not spend a lot of time one registering food etc. That is what makes this app different. You don't` have to register the workout and the calculation is very exact.  4

NU12 Idea #12 by Mariko Franca “The Cool Ref”

I found myself staring at our refrigerator one very hot Saturday afternoon and I wished I can stay inside it even for couple of hours just to cool myself.  This led me to thinking about other things our refrigerator can function as and below are the things that I came up with:

1.  Room cooler – We do not have an air-conditioner at home and we have to rely on the electric fans to cool the room.  What if the ref can also help cool the room?  I'm thinking that as the inside of the ref cools so will its outer part.  The appliance can have a switch button that provides you the option to do this or just keep the cool inside especially on already cold days or when no one is in the kitchen.4

2.  Expiry date alarm – You can input digitally the expiry date of the things you put inside your ref.  An alarm (i.e. beep, flashing red light) will go off to warn you that an item will be expiring soon.  You can set the options as to when you want to be informed (i.e. one day or one week in advance).  If your house is wifi-enabled and you have a smartphone, you can also have your ref send you a warning (i.e. text message) so that you will be informed even when you go on vacation. 4

3.  Auto-grocery list – I believe that every household has a particular set of goods that are regular refrigerator grocery items.  In our house for example, we should always have bread, eggs, Yakult, cheese, and fish.  My dad sometimes fail to check what is it that we still have in stock and so end up with too much fish or vegetables which would eventually go to waste.  The auto-grocery list system will have a screen and keyboard.  The system will be installed in the ref door.  What you first need to do is type in the items that your ref should always contain.  You need to update the system whenever you put in or remove an item.  Imagine a digital inventory system.  Then before you leave for the grocery, you can press the 'send' button and you will receive the auto-grocery list in your smartphone.  You can also set the system to send you the list at a particular date and time.  For example, if it was for my dad it would be every Sunday at 1PM which is when he goes to the grocery store. 4

NU12 Idea #11 by Mariko Franca “Sensor(ed)”

There are many things that are using sensors nowadays:  lights, television, guns, convertible cars, doors, etc.  It does make things easier for us so I thought of other things that could use sensors.  Below are three thing that I came up with:

1.  Umbrella - You know how the umbrella handle is all rigid but the rain can come from several directions within a span of seconds?  If umbrellas have sensors, they will bend against the direction of the wind so you can optimize the shield that it provides you from the rain.  This way, you can focus on walking/running while holding the handle well (so it doesn't fly away) while the upper bendable part does its work. 4

2.  Waiting Sheds – Waiting sheds protect us from rain and glaring sun.  Sometimes though, there are so many people that the shed cannot cover everyone.  If waiting sheds have sensors, they can expand sideways so more people will be covered.  There will be a limit as to how long the shed will expand, probably half of the shed on both sides.  The sensor will detect the presence of people so it will expand.  It will go back to its original size if it does not detect anyone under it after 2 or 3 minutes. 4

3.  iPad/Cellphone – One of the things I think we can innovate in gadgets like the iPad and cellphone are the 'unlock' keys.  What if instead of pressing 'unlock + asterisk' in the cellphone or doing the wiping motion in the iPad, there will be a built-in sensor that will detect if someone is holding the gadget?  The sensor will be in the area where users are usually holding the gadget.  By placing or holding the gadget in that area, your cellphone and tablet will automatically unlock.  The sensor will be sensitive only to the skin and not just anything it comes into contact with. 4

NU12 Idea #9 by Mariko Franca “Auto-Dry Umbrella & Raincoat”

One thing that's a hassle when it rains is when you use your umbrella and go inside a building (i.e. mall, school, or office).  You bring in your dripping umbrella.  It's good if you go inside a mall because they usually have plastics available where you can put your umbrella but offices or schools do not usually have those.  Some establishments provide a box where you can place your wet umbrella but I hesitate in leaving mine there because someone might steal it or take it by mistake.  So I thought what if the umbrella has its own heating or drying capability.  We will call it the Auto-Dry Umbrella.  There will be a central mechanism located in the handle and minute "arteries" that branch out to the shade part.  You will push a button to release heat that will dry your umbrella in less than 30 seconds.

I would also like to have an Auto-Dry Raincoat especially when there is strong rain and the wind is blowing diagonally.  The raincoat provides better protection and can keep your clothes dry.  The only problem is when you ride a jeep or bus, the raincoat drips and wets the floor and your seatmate.  It is also a hassle to remove it then hold it while inside the vehicle then put it on again.  With the Auto-Dry Raincoat, you can dry your coat as you enter the vehicle and you don't need to remove it anymore.

The central mechanism will be battery-operated.  We can also make the central mechanism solar-powered so that whenever you use it on a sunny day (for the umbrella) or hang it out to dry (raincoat), the mechanism will recharge.4

NU12 Idea #10 by Mariko Franca "O2Bike"

I heard somewhere that some see the bike as the most environment friendly vehicle because it does not emit gasoline.  Not to mention that it also provides the rider a means to be healthier.  What if your bike can do more than that?

I introduce the O2Bike (pronounced 'oh-two-bike').  It converts carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen (O2) while it moves.  The frame of the wheels of the O2Bike acts similar to a real plant because it goes thru the process of photosynthesis.  The frame contains "absorbers" that collects the CO2 from the environment (i.e. from the air, the car beside you).  All you need to do is to make sure that you pour in water inside the frame (there is a small hole for it) because CO2, water, and sunlight are needed in the process.  No need to worry about sunlight because you can get it from the environment as long as it is not raining.

With the O2Bike, you achieve three things:  a) Help decrease pollution because you convert the CO2 gas emitted by cars into O2; b) Provide other people and yourself cleaner air to breathe; and c) Keep yourself healthy. 4
