Apple Gets a Stern Warning - Transmission #24

Apple, as reflected by its low stock prices must be suffering.  Ipod is on the way to extinction?

MP3 is built into every smartphone.  And the music stream is free at Pandora.

What will be the next innovation (a fast one) to have it stay ahead?

Apple Gets a Stern Warning
By LOUIS BASENESE, Chief Investment Strategist

Less talking, more pictures.

That's the philosophy we're adopting today. And with good reason, too.

I'm going to hit you with a trio of key insights about technology investments. The news might surprise you...

Take a look and feel free to email your comments, questions, or biting criticisms afterwards to feedback@techandinnovationdaily.com. Enjoy!

The iPod's Days Are Numbered

When it comes to Endangered Tech Species, we noted last week that digital cameras and portable music players are clearly on the list.

And here's some fresh proof that the personal music player - the most popular of which is Apple's (AAPL) iPod - is about to join the dodo bird in extinction.

It's easy to see why the iPod's popularity is fading.

Thanks to free streaming music services like Pandora (P), consumers don't have to pay a penny for MP3 songs anymore.

Not to mention, it's kind of hard to sell a gadget when its main function already comes baked into every smartphone.

Apple has enjoyed a fantastic run with the iPod... but the tech world is fast and fickle, so the company had better be innovating the next breakthrough consumer technology.

Tech Stocks Are Good for Dividends, Too

On Wednesday, I challenged you to think like a contrarian.

And I demonstrated my point by explaining why you should consider investing in hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturer, Seagate (STX).

Today, I'm going to challenge you to flex your contrarian muscle yet again.

You see, most people think technology stock investments are only good for one thing - capital appreciation.

After all, tech companies are supposed to reinvest all their excess cash into R&D to create world-changing technologies.

But many tech companies - especially larger ones like Apple - rake in more cash than they could ever possibly reinvest in growth. As a result, they're increasingly returning it to shareholders via dividends.

As you can see above, the yields on S&P 500 tech stocks are rising.

In fact, the last time we witnessed a spike to these levels was back in 2008. However, it was a result of plummeting prices. (Remember, yields rise with falling prices.)

But this time, share prices and yields are increasing. And there's only one way for that to happen - tech companies keep upping their dividend payments.

If you want a simple, easy way to capture increasing tech dividends, consider the First Trust NASDAQ Technology Dividend Index Fund (TDIV). (You can read more about it from my colleague, Ryan Anders, here.)

Bring on the Cashless Society, Would Ya?

Earlier in the year, we pegged near-field communication (NFC) and mobile payments as two top tech trends to invest in this year.

And the latest data only solidifies our bullishness...

Four months ago, the U.K. transit authority rolled out NFC for paying bus fares. And even in that short period of time, adoption has soared - from zero transactions to over one million.

As Transport for London's Shashi Verma says, "Enabling customers to use their contactless payment card on the buses removes the inconvenience of needing... to dig around for cash before making a journey."

No wonder the number of NFC payment users is expected to balloon in the U.K. over the next five years.

The lesson is clear: If you build the mobile payment platform, they will pay!

That's it for today. Be sure to let us know what you think about today's column - or any of our work at Tech & Innovation Daily - by emailing us at feedback@techandinnovationdaily.com.

The Ultimate Stock Booster
Between 2002 and 2013, the stock Aeropostale did fairly well. It turned $20,000 into $144,791. However, without any options or other gimmicks, you could have turned that $20,000 into $621,264 - nearly five times more money. Even better, you could have done that while taking less risk. You buy the stock just like everyone else, but somehow you make more money. Find out how.

IPAD VIDEO LESSON - GET MOST OF YOUR IPAD

You made a smart decision investing your hard-earned money in your iPad. Wouldn't it be a waste if you never use it to it's fullest potential?
Apple Forgot Your Manual?!

What was the first thing you looked for when you opened your iPad box? Were you like me… surprised and disappointed that there was no instruction manual in there? I thought it was a mistake and the Apple factory forgot to pack my slick glossy full-color instruction book.

Apple's whole model is "ease of use". The statement they tried to make was that you don't even need a manual. And, maybe that's true if you're just going to use your iPad as an overpriced email checker. But, it's not just a giant iPhone. You want to get more out of your iPad. You want to unlock it's full potential.
But unfortunately, if no one actually shows you some of the iPad's less-obvious tricks and tips, you'll probably never discover them on your own. And, that is your iPad's one BIG flaw.
Let A Super-Geek Show You the Way

Don't you secretly wish you had some super-geek friend who bought his iPad the day it came out? He could come over your house and show you how to do all the coolest stuff. Well, I'm that geek friend! I've recorded video lessons for you that cover every single feature and benefit of your iPad.
How many times have you said to yourself, I haven't used that feature yet. But, I'm going to learn someday soon. Well, today is that day.

In Just 11 Minutes a Day

You can watch your iPad Video Lessons at your own convenience. If you just watch 11 minutes a day during your ritual cup of coffee, you'll quickly and easily gain an understanding of your iPad.
Plus, I'll show you untapped features that you would never even think to google-search.

Admit to yourself that you've already struggled a bit figuring out some stuff on your iPad. I know I did at first too. I spent month and months reading, experimenting, searching online, and talking to other iPad owners.

Sometimes, I had to throw my hands up in frustration. Now, I can save you all that time by quickly and visually showing you how to do EVERYTHING you want to do with your iPad.

Will the Samsung Apple lawsuit decision affect smartphone sales?

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship

There are many speculations on what will happen after the landmark decision  on Apple and Samsung.  Will there be changes in the way companies will innovate or make their products.

The article at the Entrepreneur.com does not think that there will be changes.  Payment of the right licensing fees will only matter.

Be Crazy and Foolish

The Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

As I took the plane to BKK last Tuesday, I happenned to browse through the Mabuhay Magazine in the plane.  The editor took the advice of Steve Jobs, now deceased, in a graduation speech he delivered to Stanford Grads way back in 2005, where said, " be crazy and foolish"  otherwise things become mundane and ordinary.

The editor said that travelling keeps you foolish and crazy.

I guess that happens to anyone who has sleepless nights:  waking up early for the trip from the house to the airport,  standing up to the challenge of the airport security, body search, waiting for forever for delayed flights, bearing with the child behind you who kicks your butt and you cant shout,  the malodorous toilets, the lousy airline food,  and hmmmm the smelly foreigners who do not take a bath and who eat spicy food always, the immigration and custom inspectors.  And what is the idea about you forbidden to bring bottled water to the departure area.  I get crazy thinking about that.  And your belt and watches being x rayed.  The shoes yes.  But the belt.  They should x ray my false teeth and dentures instead.  Hahaha.

But really you get new ideas when you travelled.  So far, I have made nearly 30 blogposts from my recent travel.  I must be foolish or crazy

Other Companies that are Entrepreneurial

Jack Welch, the former boss of GE cut down GE from a mammoth goliath to a collection of entrepreneurial companies (but now Jack Welch has retired, what is the future of GE?  Are there creative ideas coming in?)

Apple too is very entrepreneurial with Steve Jobs, former boss who went AWOL back on the saddle.  Name its market busting products:  Iphone, Ipad, Itunes, innovating new products and business models as well. (I stands for innovation?)

Jorma Ollila transformed Nokia, a maker of cables and rubber boots into a cellphone giant.  Now its President, Olli-Pekka Kallasvou wants to make Nokia an internet company (it now has Ovi platform.  But Nokia is no longer "the cellphone" in the Philippines.) It works very closely with some 4,500 small suppliers.

Procter and Gamble is farming out its R & D (concentrating on brand management?) It even sold its IT department in the Philippines!

Microsoft, the big tree, the anchor companies, gives livelihood to some 750,000 small companies (which are probably entrepreneurial and inventive?)
