12th NU 12 Paper - Own Topic

12th NU12 Paper – If I can invent one machine, it would be…:

THE ULTIMATE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE

Medical imaging in this modern technology driven era has never been so diversified. From the standard xray, ultrasound, to the more sophisticated CT-scan, MRI, Nuclear Medicine imaging and to the advanced Hybrid PET Molecular (Positron Emission Tomography) scans, the present-day physician has a wide array of imaging modalities to choose from.

However, certain diseases of patients usually require multiple imaging modalities. A breast nodule, for example, may initially be seen in ultrasound. After which X-ray mammography may be done. Inconclusive findings may prompt for a scintimammography scan and so forth. For the average patient, these imaging modalities entails too much cost, not to mention the amount of cumulative radiation exposure the patient gets.

So if I had the opportunity to design a diagnostic machine, it should be an “all-in-one” machine. It should function with the anatomic accuracy of an MRI or CT hybrid with functional accuracy of PET, with minimal radiation exposure like an ultrasound. Although technology of this magnitude is expected to be costly, it should be made affordable to the general population. This would tremendously aid precision diagnosis which will lead to better treatment of patients.

LUNCH VENDO

During my medical school days, I was always in a hurry to do things done because of the tremendous volume of reading and studying that had to be accomplished in a certain amount of time. We often had 3-5 exams in a day, and that means every “free” time is used for reviewing, even lunch breaks. So I was used to having lunch and snacks on the go, bringing food to the classroom and studying while having meals.

After more than 15 years, once again I find myself in the classroom, now in AGSB. And sometimes, because of the amount of assignments and readings that had to be done, there is really no time to spend for a regular lunch in the canteen. The long queue line in the single counter that serves rice and lunch alone will eat up most of the break time. So wouldn’t it be really convenient if there were a number of lunch dispensing vendo machines in the campus?

An ideal machine would have sandwich packs, and rice toppings packs etc. and drinks also. One uber hungry student can just go to the nearest machine, get the meal and return to the room in less than 5-10minutes. It is also expected to decongest the long lines in the canteen.

Multi-Level Parking

10th NU12 Paper – What pisses me off at the office:
Multi-Level Parking

Government establishments are usually crowded and usually parking is a problem. Parking in hospitals is also a problem. So imagine how much of a problem in parking you have in a government hospital?

Everyday is like a search for the holy grail as I try to find a much coveted empty parking slot in the hospital I work in. For a hospital with almost 550 inpatients, 600 daily out-patients, 1000 employees, and 200 doctors, a 50-car parking area (which is FREE PARKING) simply wouldn’t be enough.

Since the hospital lacks the required lot-area for a full blown multi-level parking, the most probable solution to this problem is the compact-steel automated multi-level parking system. Of course, this has to be PAY PARKING to retrieve the capital outlay.

The available parking space at the back of the hospital is around the size of a full basketball court. This can usually accommodate 12 cars. If we can have a 6-level parking system in this area, we will already have 72 parking slots, already more than the existing area.

Post-paid or Pre-paid Pandesal

POST-PAID (or PRE-PAID) PANDESAL

Filipino staple food in the morning is obviously hot pandesal and coffee. So, it comes as no surprise my disappointment that for some reason, all four (4) nearby bakeries in our area where we buy the breakfast bread all closed-shop. So we had no where to buy fresh, hot pandesal every morning. We had to buy pandesal from farther stores the day before, but by the time we have it for breakfast, it isn’t fresh anymore.

I guess these bakeries closed-shop for a common reason: “na-lugi.” And most probably, it’s because of weak sales. But everybody eats pandesal every day, so how come they lost in the business? There must be a better way to capture the pandesal-lover market rather than waiting for them to buy the pandesal in the bakery.
Then I remembered our group report for our micro-enterprise. Our topic was Pandesal delivery, where we would set up a pandesal bakery with no physical store outlet. We would just contract with partners who will peddle in bicycles the pandesal every morning.
But I would like to take the concept further. Instead of just peddling the pandesal, maybe we can already survey the neighborhood for those who want pandesal regularly delivered. They can pay either on a daily basis (pre-paid) or every 15 days (post-paid). This way we can maintain a steady customer base, and project daily demands easier.
