A steady stream of innovation flowed in 2012.  Some of the notables:

l.  3d printing

2.  More smartphones

3.  Windows 8 platform that work across pc, laptops, and smartphones

4.  NASA curiosity landing in Mars

5.  Felix Baumgartner plunge from the edge of earth's edge of space and first to achieve supersonic speed as he plunged

6. Director of Titanic James Cameroon historic first ever dive 11 km from the surface into Marianas trench.

7.  Discovery/confirmation of sub atomic particles first theorized by British physicist Peter Higgs in 1964

There were discoverers who passed away:

Eugene Polley  -  the remote control

Roland Moreno -  the smartcard on phone and credit cards

N. Joseph Woodland -discovered the bar code. May they rest in peace

John D. Rockefeller started Standard Oil in 1870. Along with becoming one of the world's wealthiest men, he also began a lifelong tradition of philanthropy. The Rockefeller Foundation has a rich history of supporting innovation -- from eradicating yellow fever to founding some of the country's first public health schools. Today Dr. Judith Rodin, the current president of the Foundation, is leading their continued humanitarian work. Her own career has been groundbreaking -- she was the first woman to lead an Ivy League institution -- University of Pennsylvania, and is the first woman to lead the Foundation.
