NU12# What pisses you off at the school? - (revised) Nelle Canta

"WHAT PISSES YOU OFF AT THE SCHOOL?"
Getting a masteral degree is not just for the title, especially for students like me, who pay for my own tuition.  I enrolled in AGSB even if the tuition is more expensive than the other schools that offer MBA degrees. I know that I would get the value for money since if it's Ateneo, quality education is assured.  Quality education means quality professors. It's disappointing when a professor doesn't actually teach, but he just pulls out his powerpoint slides and just read the content, without explaining it, without giving examples and worse, he doesn't even look at his students while he read the slides. I'm not sure if AGSB has certain guidelines for the professors' teaching outline. If there's none, I think AGSB should come up with a guideline for the professors. I suggest also that there should be a "spy" student who will take a video and report the professor if ever he/she reads the slides only. In this way, there would be an actual proof of the inefficiency of the professor. The proof will help the faculty to improve their teaching. 3.5 <there are standards for teaching and which this office strives hard to achieve>

          I hope they install additional lights at the basement parkings specifically at the far end. This will help increase visibility especially on heavily tinted windows, and  those that are more comfortable with reverse parking.

NU12 # 9, What Pisses You Off at the school?: Electronic ID Detection System - Alvin Bilolo

NU12 # 9, What Pisses You Off at AGSB?: Electronic ID Detection System - Alvin Bilolo
It is our routine in AGSB to enter the school premises wearing our school ID. Just like any other universities, we have the rule of 'No ID, No entry.' If there are times that an employee left his ID, he needs to pay an amount of Php 200.00 for the passes. The fee will only be possible if the guards on duty will be able to detect that the student indeed left his ID. There are instances that if the student walks confidently while entering the school, the guards will not detect that he has no ID. And so no fee will be remitted. This is not a light problem since a lot of people can pretend to have an ID of AGSB and enter our school premises. I believe this is a threat for the security of some students since we are not sure if everyone is an authentic student. Believe it or not, this should piss all of us off!
As a solution, I would then propose an electronic ID detection system in every entrance gate of AGSB. This is a system that will automatically detect the presence of ID in the student and so the entrance door will open. If the student does not have an ID, he cannot enter the school premises unless he pays the fee and the guards allow him to enter. Here are the benefits of this proposal:
·        Only those students who have their IDs with them will enter the school easily;
·        Those students who left their IDs have to pay the fee of Php 200.00 first before they enter the school premises;
·        If there are new students, they only need to inform the guards on duty that they are new and show their registration form before entering AGSB;
·        We can minimize the threat that strangers will enter our school facilities;
·        Students will be more disciplined;
Our library is currently doing this similar routine but there's a lot more to be improved. There should be an automatic update of the students profile in AGSB's system to determine if the student is enrolled in the new term. With this, AGSB will be a more world class institution. 3

NU12 #11 – What pisses you off at the school? – Lea Olegario

NU12 #11 – What pisses you off at school? – Lea Olegario
We always have to wear our IDs in school and if you do not bring your ID, you get a hard time from the security and you will even have to pay PHP 200. I do not see the logic in this as the guard does not actually check the badges. You can wear any ID and you will be allowed to go in. So there is actually no point in having this dependence on the old ID card. <bring plenty of IDs with you>
A more useful badge would be like a name tag which can even be used in class so that the students' names will be shown to everyone in class. Biometrics is a better way of doing security. IDs can still be provided but if we want to strengthen security, biometrics should be the way to go. This is already being implemented in the Library at the Rockwell Campus and should be extended to the entrances. In this way there is no reason to bring any ID anymore. Thumb prints should be able to do the work. Any ID should be able to work in case the system is down and will just be scanned with any bar code scanner. 3 <tatoo id para di malimutan? Ha3>
Another thing that gives a hard time to students in school is the difficulty in getting the books. The books are so big and heavy and hard to bring in school. Most of us are part-time students and we go to work first before we go to school and we need to bring the book from home to work to school. Also, sometimes the school does not even have an available copy of the book that they are requiring so we have to go search a lot of bookstores for the book.
 The school should offer E-book versions and sell it to the students instead of hard copies.  Almost everyone have smart phones and tabs and we can use these to open the E-books. There can also be computer-versions of the E-books. We should partner with online store companies so that they will make available academic books that we need. Libraries should have E-books in computers and we should add tabs or computers where we can access the books inside the place. This would be easier and more students can access the same book at the same time. Having E-books would also eliminate photocopying and creation of a copy of the entire book.
The school should be abreast with current technology to bring the students to new heights of learning.

NU 12- What pisses me off at the school – Joseph Cunanan

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

There are actually 2 things I hate at the school.

First, is the level of customer I receive every time I call the registrar. Most of the time, I feel like the
people who answer the phone don’t even want to help, always in a hurry, and there was even a time
that one person made me feel stupid because I cant seem to figure out what’s going on with my online
account. I recommend that:

a. The people at the registrar be taught on some principles of customer service. When students call,
they must be able to provide assistance that we need. We pay tuition fees and that includes the
service we get from all departments within the university, so we deserve a better service.
b. Students must also be given a chance provide feedback not only about their professors but also
with their experience with school personnel like guards, registrar, library etc. This way, the school
can provide the best student experience from all aspects of school offerings.

The second thing I hate about the school is the inconsistency amongst professors who teach the same
course/ subject. I understand that each professor has their own teaching techniques, but there are
occasions that not all professors are able to deliver what is written on the syllabus. Ergo, students tend to compare one professor over another. I think it will be better if professors are calibrated, so that
regardless to which class a student attend to, everyone will get the same maximum benefits from the
courses we will take.3.5

WHAT I HATE MOST ABOUT THE SCHOOL
It is very hard to give a negative comment to a school which has been and still is a part of my weekly responsibility. Ateneo to the common Filipino is perceived to be an elitist school. Students normally come from the top schools of the land and usually come from the cream of the crop. However, if one has been immersed in the curriculum, being an elitist is a personal decision.
Another thing that I hate is the tuition fee is quite steep, especially if one comes from an average income family. I only hope that the tuition fee will be more affordable, most especially to all so as to give more opportunities to the average income earner.
I hate Ateneo because it is quite far from our house. At least, I am just obligated to go there once a week. Knowing that traffic is such a common sight, it would have been better if it was closer to my house. Maybe, having school at home via video conferencing/teleconference is very much open.  However, I have classmates living in farther provinces, riding the airplane just to go to Manila. This just shows how dedicated and sincere students are in this progressive school.3
TRAFFIC IN EDSA
Honk, honk…… weeee…… screech…… Boooogggg….  Beep beep….. These are sounds that we usually hear along the streets of EDSA. It is such an effort to drive along EDSA most especially during peak hours of traffic and even during rainy days. The buses and taxis moving left and right warrants that drivers be good at defensive driving. I remember in the 70s and early 80s, driving to Makati will take me only 15 minutes from Mandaluyong. Though buses abound, I only see the Love Bus signs along the streets. Traffic was tolerable and crusing at 60-80 mph was not an effort even during peak hours. I remember my father bringing me to UP at 40mph was no problem and I will be the one embarrassed since we were driving quite slowly then.

Now, things are more different. The streets are more congested even during wee hours and more so during peak hours. Driving at 60-80mph is already magical and mind boggling and thrilling..... Why so? More cars? More populated urban area? Roads not well maintained? Drivers not tolerant and sensitive to cars nearby. Is it population that is causing this or is it the attitude of drivers.  Maybe, even population control and control of acquisition of new cars can help resolve the issue of traffic congestion or car pooling. Maybe, planning of construction of roads and repair can be done I do hope that the traffic in EDSA will be resolved one of these days… Everyone will be happy.

WHAT PISSES YOU IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD? WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

Walking through my neighbourhood in P Tuason, Cubao  is a smooth walk inspite of a busy street. Sidewalk is seen in both sides but obstructed by garbages, permanent structures, barangay outposts and the likes. People walking would swerve around the obstructions. Isn't it that these sidewalks are meant to be walkways for people to walk through and not use the main road? So, what are to do?

Maybe if roads are wider then these walkways can be widened. This will give space for the houses/buildings to have ample area to do what they want. Garbages can be placed inside the house or kept in containers that would limit the stench from coming out. The sidewalks can have flat surfaces giving a chance for the disabled people on wheelchairs to access these areas. Tahanang Walang Hanggan, is near our area and I think that this will help them a lot. Planning is an important component in building structures and roads. Of course, what I can say is that these roads and pavements are unplanned, reflecting the dilly dally thinking of individuals involved in road construction and what else, our local officials. So here's is to the local elections …… hope things will be more planned than before. 3

NU 12 KC- What pisses you off at the School

Hi Sir,

Below is my 2nd NU 12 blog.

Thank you!

KLC
ENTREP
NU 12: What pisses you off at AGSB?  What must be done?
DISCLAIMER: I’m writing this blog while I’m hungry; hence, I must be delusional.  These are just my opinions. J

It’s April 2012.  Vacation time for most students and summer time fun for almost everyone.  It’s the crucial week after holy week when people just look forward to taking a break or traveling to combat the rising heat in the metro.  For most Ateneo MBA students though, this period is called third trimester of the school year.  While my father and siblings are out playing golf and my mother is maximizing the capacity of a beauty parlor, here I am at home typing a paper for school while sipping a cup of white coffee and chewing on a banana muffin.  Not a bad way to end my Saturday.

Everyone seems to be in “chillax” mode these days except for the MBA students and professors.  I have always taken Saturday classes and this is the first semester where I only took weekday classes.  Previously, I could afford to go out to have lunch or dinner in Powerplant Mall because of the flexibility of a Saturday schedule.  On weekdays however, I could only rely on our cafeteria to satisfy my hunger.  For the last few weeks, I have noticed a decrease in the amount of food being served.  The alternate food stalls are also closed.  This did not happen last semester where we could still ponder on the food choices in the cafeteria even up to before 9 pm.

This Saturday morning, the amount of food being served is back to normal but several alternate food stalls remained closed.  I went up to San Francisco Coffee to get my fix of their hot chocolate which I do every Saturday, and this time they are also closed.  I started to think if these actions were caused by the summer break of the Law School students.

For three weeks now, I have also noticed regular church goers in the Ateneo Professional Schools Chapel being informed by our security personnel that there are no masses because of the summer break.  “We in AGSB are not in summer break”, I told myself.  If food supply is being decreased due to an expected decrease in population of students within the building for the next few months, I would understand but not without shaking my head in disbelief.  However, if other functions within school also have to cease because of this, I don’t think this is acceptable—especially if we are talking about religious obligations.  We also had college summer breaks in Ateneo in Loyola Heights and the population also decreased, but other units did not stop functioning.

I was browsing through Facebook last night when I saw one of my classmate’s status messages: “wala pa ring grade sa _______. Huhu”.  I checked my AGSB account and realized all my subjects last semester have no grades yet.  I just had a final paper defense earlier this morning, so I would understand the state of my subjects.  I don’t understand though why we don’t have grades in other subjects where the requirements have been completed one week prior to finals week.  I have no personal problems on this since I pay for my own tuition but I have classmates who need to get their grades for a reimbursement from their company.  I see some of my professors around school but I also know some who are outside the country and then I get reminded again—ah, it is summer break.

Why do we have to stop moving because others have also stopped?

If we are all on summer mode, can I now wear flip flops to school?

I must be overreacting but I think the regular activities in school should not halt just because another function has halted.  The AGSB population continues to be in motion throughout the entire calendar year and we all need the school management’s support for the entire year as well.  The food should continue to flow, masses should continue to take place and professors should still be present for us to confirm the results of the past semester’s hard work.  I think we can all agree on these.  If there will be changes because of the summer culture, then even those who are in school should enjoy the summer experience with a few lenient changes on their own.  It’s hard to stop when you are on a momentum, but even harder to recover when you lose that momentum.

I’m still looking forward to my next weekday class and hope that the milk tea stall is open again. 3

<We cook our own food, or buy elsewhere, why dont we appoint a committee or a group to handle the class food requirements, or order food? Let us focus on solutions, that we could do
 and not rely on the leadership. That would have made the grade of this submission higher.

<  I submit my grades at once but there seems to be an IT infrastructue problem at the school.>

Regards,

Nu 6 of JC, What Pisses You off at the School

What pisses you off at AGSB? What must be done?
By: M100048 JC

I have always enjoyed studying in AGSB.  This is the first ever private school I have been to and I'm amazed by how fully equipped and clean the facilities are.  I was excited to go to class every week…until…one day I left my ID and the security guard would not let me in.  I know of course that it is my fault and I own it.  I apologized to the entrance guard and asked him on what I should do so I can enter the premises and attend my class.  He said I should go to the cashier and pay P300.  Obviously the amount shocked me.  But I couldn't complain since it is my fault.  I accepted the penalty.
The guard escorted me to the cashier (which I actually admired because it means that they make sure that no unidentified person can loiter inside the school).  I was impressed by the security of the school.  Then when I arrived at the cashier, I readied my P300 and my company ID.  The cashier just took my cash and asked my name.  I told her my name and I handed to her my work ID to show her that I am really the person I'm claiming to be. She brushed it away and gave me a receipt.  I then went to the guard and asked him to give me a temporary ID because I have already paid my penalty. The guard said "that's your temporary ID" pointing to my receipt.  Of course that confused me.   I initially planned of wearing the receipt around my neck so that nobody will question me inside the school but thought otherwise.

So what's annoying about this?
Let's get go back to the basics.  What's the ID for?  It is a card showing that you are a valid student of AGSB and that you can enter the campus freely.  What happens when you don't have your ID?  The school can't readily validate your identity and if they let you in, the security of the campus might be compromised.  Think of how many affluent students this campus has.
The problem is, i cannot connect the premise  mentioned in the previous paragraph to the solution being done by AGSB for lost ID (making you pay P300 without validating your identity). This means that making you pay for your missing ID gives the school extra money while does nothing to security.

Therefore, if you are an outsider who wants to enter the campus, you can enter in two ways.  First as a visitor, maybe you can buy a fake ID in Recto and leave it in the entrance guard.  Second, and the more convenient, is to pretend that you're a student who lost an ID.  All you need is a P300 and you are good to go!

What can be done about it?  Part of the tuition we pay to the school is for their making sure that the facility is secure.  The main purpose of faculty and student IDs is to make sure that only authorized or registered and verified (in case of visitors) persons are allowed to enter the campus.  If I lost my school identification, then I should be required to present another ID card to the cashier/registrar so they can validate my identity.  Then they should give me a temporary ID showing that I am indeed authorized to go around the campus and attend classes.  They can charge me P300 or P500 as penalty, it doesn't matter.  I think the school is completely missing the point of why IDs are issued and it bothers me because I know for every person that enters without proper validation, the security of both people and properties of AGSB are compromised. 3

What action is proposed?
