Subject: NU12 # 12 New Spending Habits

Hi Sir,

Please see below for my NU12 #12 NEW SPENDING HABITS (my last two entries dont have a grade):

I am an impulsive buyer ever since I earned my own money.  Since I worked for a credit card company before, I was offered credit cards from almost all the banks in the country.  Three years ago, I joined an eye-opener event.  It made me realize to be more practical and to be more frugal.  Also, I learned to share my blessings.  I set a portion of my money every year to buy school bags and school supplies for my chosen school.  Every year, since then, I have my Bag-to-School Program wherein I donate bags to elementary kids around 100 kids.  In order to balance or budget my money to my annual program, everyday needs and wants, I have set up the following as my new spending habits:

1.  Maintain 2 credits cards

From a number of 10 credit cards, I maintained only two credit cards.  If before I use it to purchase clothes, shoes and food, I only use it now for emergencies.  If in case I want something, I only purchase what I can pay for the due date.  I don't use beyond what I can pay.  Also, I pay my dues on time and the full amount so as to prevent paying late payment and other penalty fees.

2.  Make a list and maintain an inventory of available items

When going to the grocery, I purchase what is indicated in my list.  Also, the list is in my phone so that anytime I can check what I need to buy.  I maintain an inventory of items I have in my phone.  For the clothes and shoes, I make a list quarterly that I need to buy and update my closet.  I diligently follow the list so as not to overspend.  Also, I keep track of all the things I have like list of books, crafts supplies, etc.  I have an inventory of the things I have so as not to duplicate the things I buy.

3.  Keep all the coins even to the last centavo

Before I used to disregard the coins and just leave them anywhere.  But I started keeping all the coins and realized that I earned more than I expected for the year.  I keep two coin boxes that I don't open until the end of the year, one is for 5 peso coins and the other is for 10 peso coins.  Also, I have a separate coin box that I can get coins or use anytime.

4.  Stop buying Magazines

I love buying YUMMY, YES and other magazines.  I realized that I spend too much on them and that I use or read them only once.  Since then, I stopped buying magazines and instead I read from the Internet for recipes and other news.  Also, I just borrow from friends or relatives if I want to read magazines.

5.  Cut down on cellphone bill

I keep track of my cellphone usage so as not to exceed the limit I have.  If I can email or use iMessage to communicate with someone, I do so so as not to deduct my text/call usage of my limit.  If I can use the landline, I usually do so so as to limit my expense in my cellphone bill. 3

New Business Idea: Electronic Cash Card for 168 and Divisoria Mall

Christmas season is a busy time for everyone at Divisoria Mall and 168 for both shoppers and sellers.  It is also a busy time for snatchers and robbers.  All stores accept cash payment, so a shopper tends to bring a lot of cash on hand when he/she goes to 168 mall or Divisoria Mall.   A month ago, my friend lost around Php10,000 inside 168 mall.  Her wallet/money was probably snatched while she was walking through the busy aisles of 168.  She was supposed to shop for toys to be given to an orphanage, in the end, she wasn't able to shop for anything.  One gets bumped through by a lot of people who pass the aisles.  It is easy to lose the wallet because people are so close together that one can open a bag without the owner noticing it.
To prevent shoppers from losing huge amounts of cash, I propose to have a cash card for 168 Mall and Divisoria Mall.  The concierge, located at every level of the 168 Mall, will be in charge in exchanging people's cash to an electronic cash card.  It is like a debit card wherein purchases to every store will be deducted in the cash card.  The cash card will be protected by a pin number or a digital signature of the owner.  The cash cards may be reloaded for a year so frequent shoppers can utilize one card only within a year's time.  With the cash card, shoppers can walk through the aisles safely and without worry of losing their cash.

Thanks.

What pisses you off at the neighborhood? What do you suggest?
- Dog Poop Scooper
- Unified Garbage Segragation
1.
             1. There are a lot of dogs in our neighborhood.  We, for one, have six dogs.  Every morning and late afternoon, we bring them outside for a walk.  Sometimes, they urinate and poop at the sidewalks.  We cleanup their poop through a broomstick and dustpan then we put it in the trashcan.  Metro aides who sweep our sidewalks every morning blame us for all the dog poop left in the sidewalks when in fact there are other neighbors who bring their dogs outside as well and just leave the poop on the sidewalk.  We know our responsibility to clean up but apparently some neighbors probably tend to forget to clean up or does not have a minute to clean up.  To prevent or eliminate the poop waste left in the streets or sidewalk, I suggest that each dog owner have a dog scooper.  It will be like a portable vacuum for dog poop.  The dog scooper will be very handy and battery-operated that dog owners can bring anywhere.  Once turned on, it will automatically absorb/scoop the dog poop without the use of bare hands to scoop it out.  It will be stored in a vacuum bag where the owners can throw anytime in the trash can.  It is easy-to-use and hygienic for dog owners.
2
     2.  Garbage in our neighborhood is collected everyday. However, garbage collectors may not pick up your garbage if you do not segregate it.  Their indication if you segregated it is if you tie your garbage bag with either a yellow or green ribbon.  A yellow ribbon indicates non-biodegradable garbage while a green ribbon is the biodegradable trash.  One time, we were not able to tie ribbons on our garbage bags. Our garbage was not collected for the day.  We were fined because of it and at the same time the helpers have to attend a seminar regarding segregation.  True, we were not able to follow the colored ribbons however, if they'll only check the inside of the bags, they were properly segregated.  Other neighbors have experienced this kind of problem as well.  Because of this, I would suggest that for our street or neighborhood to have a common trash bin for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and a separate bin for recyclables like plastic bottles and cartons.  All garbage of the neighborhood will be gathered in common trash bins to be collected everyday by the garbage collectors.  With this solution, it will lessen the mistake of not using the ribbons, save on the black garbage bags and at the same time it will help people be responsible on garbage segregation.  A separate trash bin for plastic bottles and cartons will be very helpful as well for the Tzu Chi Foundation, who collects those recyclables from our neighborhood every Tuesday and utilize them to create new products like blankets and mats. 3

NU12#3 and #4 by Lei Pichay

Hi Sir,

What pisses you off at AGSB? What must be done?

1.       1.  Cafeteria Food
There's limited choices of food at the Cafeteria available for students especially for those who have classes at night.  Some food items are already out of stock during the 7:30-8:00 PM break of MBA students.  Most of the students go straight from work to school and does not have the time to take their dinner prior to class.  Since the school is just beside the Rockwell Powerplant, probably the school cafeteria can have a tie-up with the restaurants by providing students access to available food to be served for the night.  The students can access the menu already online or what restaurants are assigned for the day.  They can text or send orders via online, the restaurant will prepare the food, a personnel from the cafeteria can pick-up all the orders.  The students may pick-up their food at the cafeteria or opt to have it delivered in their classroom.  A minimal charge will be added to the total bill so as the cafeteria personnel will earn something as well. 3

2.      2.  Class Cards
It gets tedious to fill-out class cards every semester for every subject especially if there are no changes to the information.  Since we have an online registration, I suggest that once a student is enrolled in his/ her subjects, a student information sheet may be filled out via online.  If a student has three subjects for that semester, then he/she has to fill out the information sheet once. It will automatically be available and sent to the Professor as a compiled database of all the students for the specific section/course. 3
3.       3.  Study Area
Most students have to meet up at Starbucks or other coffee shops to discuss group assignments since there are limited areas for groupwork in school.  The library may be another option however, group discussion is limited since it may go loud and disturb other students.  I suggest a pavilion like area or students study area in the garden beside the cafeteria for group meetings and where laptops can be connected.  Students can freely discuss and do groupwork without any limitations. 4
4.       4.  Online Access or App for Smartphones to the List of Books/References Found in the Library
Sometimes I have limited time to go to the library and browse over the books for reference in our assignments.  I suggest to have an app in smartphones or easy access to the list of books available in the library and a jist of what they are about and to what aisle they're located for convenience and to save time in finding them.   4

Serendipity Walk in Marikina
Marikina is known to be the shoe capital of the Philippines.  It is also known as one of the cleanest cities in the country.  I have lived all my life in Marikina and I can say that it has the potential to be one of the tourist destinations or alternative to other parts in the Metro.  One street in particular that has lot of opportunities and potential is the JP Rizal Street.  It is where the Kapitan Moy Restaurant is located which is near the Marikina river and the Our Lady of the Abandoned Church.  The following are my suggestions for business opportunities:
1.       Year-long Shoe Trade Fair
Since it is situated near the house where the shoe industry in Marikina started, the government can set up the whole street into a shoe avenue, where the different shoe manufacturers can sell their products just like the one in Liliw, Laguna.  It can be a tourist destination and a haven for shoe lovers.  One does not need to go as far as Liliw, Laguna to buy shoes for personal use or for merchandise.
2.       Fashion School Specifically for Designing and Making Shoes
I don't think there is a fashion school intended for shoe design only.  This can be a start and it can have the potential to revive the dying shoe industry in the country and make Philippine-made shoes globally competitive. 4
3.       Heritage Walk and Food Tour
The aforementioned street is lined up with old houses that date back in the 19th century.  It is also lined up with restaurants with unique design and with exemplary cuisine.  A variety of restaurants and local delicacies abound the area that can fit all types of budget.  A heritage tour discussing the history of Marikina, shoes and food tour may be offered.  4
4.       Floating restaurant with river cruise
Just a few meters away is the foot of Marikina River. A floating restaurant complete with some local singing may be offered (Similar to what is offered in Loboc River, Bohol).  4
5.       Weekend Market by the River
Weekend Market is becoming a trend in the Metro nowadays.  The Marikina Government holds the annual Christmas tiangge or bazaar by the river every Christmas season only.  A weekend market may be organized for the whole year so as people can gather and have a venue to promote their own small businesses as well.  4

NU 12 2 by Lei Pichay - compact trash compactor at CR

Hi Sir,

Please see below for my NU12 #2

NU12 #2

TISSUE COMPACTOR TRASH BIN
When I go to the malls, as much as possible I don't go to the public restrooms.  If I have to, I use the pay restroom or the restroom of Starbucks.  If they're all not available, I have no choice but use the regular restroom.   One thing that I hate in public restrooms is that the trash cans inside the cubicle get crammed with used tissue that they tend to overflow and be thrown off in the floor.  Sometimes, there is no Janitress cleaning it up right away and may not have the time since people continuously go in and out of the restroom.

To address the overflowing tissue problem in the ladies' restrooms, I am suggesting for a tissue compactor trash bin.  The trash bin will have a sensor to track if the level of used tissue in the trash bin is about to spill.  If it has reached the spilling level, the trash bin will automatically cover and compact the tissue inside.  All the thrown tissue in the bin will be compact, and will leave a huge space again in the bin.  After the process, it will automatically open and tissue may again be thrown inside the trash bin.  A whole day may pass without the janitress getting all the trash in every cubicle. 3

Thanks sir!

NU12 1 by Lei Pichay -just one ID card for all bank transactions

Hi Sir,

Please see below my NU12 #1.

Thanks.

NU12 # 1 by Lei Pichay
What pisses you off in your office? What do you think must be done?
I used to work for a bank for five years.  One of the things that pissed me off when I worked with them was that employees have to swipe their ids at the ground floor and then when you reach the floor that you are assigned to, you have to manually register your time-in and time-out in the log-sheet of the guard. I don't see the use of having a manual log-in and electronic log-in.  First, there may be discrepancy at the times registered at the ground floor and the time you logged in at the floor you're assigned to.  Also, it's a waste of time and paper to manually register or indicate your attendance at a log-sheet.

Another thing that I don't really like was that we have too many cards, an ATM card for our salaries to be credited and we are given two credit cards since all employees are required to have all their products and patronize them.  I sometimes leave my ATM at the house but never my company ID.   I don't really like having so many cards to think about including my school id and company id to think about.

I suggest for the company to have a new ID system, a company ID and ATM/Debit card in one.  Incorporating the ATM in the company would make sure that come payday, ATM is on hand and salary may be withdrawn anytime.  The employee doesn't have to have too many cards to think about.  A barcode in the ID will be for the attendance of the employee and a magnetic strip at the back will be for ATM and debit transactions.  With this type of ID card, fraud transactions may be prevented for debit transactions, because the picture in the ID would verify if it is the true cardholder.  Also, the new ID system would not require the employees to manually register per floor.  With just one swipe of the new ID upon entrance at the ground floor of the building, the time and attendance will be automatically updated in the floor/department the employee is assigned to.  4
