LUNCH VENDO

During my medical school days, I was always in a hurry to do things done because of the tremendous volume of reading and studying that had to be accomplished in a certain amount of time. We often had 3-5 exams in a day, and that means every “free” time is used for reviewing, even lunch breaks. So I was used to having lunch and snacks on the go, bringing food to the classroom and studying while having meals.

After more than 15 years, once again I find myself in the classroom, now in AGSB. And sometimes, because of the amount of assignments and readings that had to be done, there is really no time to spend for a regular lunch in the canteen. The long queue line in the single counter that serves rice and lunch alone will eat up most of the break time. So wouldn’t it be really convenient if there were a number of lunch dispensing vendo machines in the campus?

An ideal machine would have sandwich packs, and rice toppings packs etc. and drinks also. One uber hungry student can just go to the nearest machine, get the meal and return to the room in less than 5-10minutes. It is also expected to decongest the long lines in the canteen. 3

THE ULTIMATE GADGET

Technology nowadays is so amazing it wasn't even dreamt of 2 decades ago. From the appearance (and demise) of the "ancient" pager or beeper, cellphones have been made from analog, to digital, from the size of a car battery to the smallest and thinnest configuration. These phones have evolved too from monochromatic, to color, to now AMOLED touch screens.

Also, the emergence of computers, from desk top PC's to laptops, to netbooks, to ultrabooks etc. And of course the ever popular tablets.

Nowadays, a young professional may have a notebook, a tablet, and probably two cellphones. A notebook is necessary for heavy office/ school work, a tablet for easy web surfing, games and relaxation, and two camera cellphones to access to networks. However, bringing all of these all the time is quite cumbersome.

Enter the "phablets" or the "big" phones (or small tablets?) that can probably replace a tablet and a phone. However, these gadgets still won't cut it for serious word processing, presentations and multi-media projects. A PC or laptop is still needed for this purpose.

So this idea for a new product is, to develop a gadget that has the power of a full PC, must be portable as cellphone, with the extra functionality of a tablet. A gadget to replace all of the above gadgets.

The recent development of the flexible amoled touchscreen technology can pave the way for this gadget. Imagine a phone with a 5" display. But if you want to view some videos, you can "unfold" the screen to reveal a 10" functional tablet. And of course for heavy work you can unfold a full sized keyboard as well, with the matching power to handle what a computer can do. And once all the work is done, it can be folded again into a phone! 4

GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL PROCUREMENT IN THE FAST LANE
Submitted by: thebluetigerMD

In a government hospital where I am part of, procurement of supplies and medicines are bound by RA 9184, or the Procurement Act. To purchase a desired supply, there must be a procurement plan, approved budget, set of specifications in the purchase request, and a lot more of required documents. A request for a rim of bond paper would have at least 10 supporting documents, wopuld pass through at least 5 offices, need a minimum of 7 signatures, and would result in around 3-4 weeks before the supply of bond paper arrives.
Although this tedious procurement process is prescribed by law, it does have undesirable effects when it comes to turn-around times, which usually leads to out of stock supplies. The time it takes to route the requisition through the offices and to obtain the signatures would really extend the procurement process, not to mention delays from the supplier side when they fail to submit necessary documents. But the law dictates that the process be followed. So what to do?
I sincerely believe that government hospitals should have different procurement guidelines than what is prescribed by law. The initial procurement law was designed for infrastructure projects, where the timeframe for completion is given considerable amount of time.
But in hospitals where lives are at stake, procurement should be on the fast lane. We cannot have times where emergency medicines run out of stock, because the deliveries of supplies have been delayed due to technical problems in the procurement process.
Therefore, amendments to RA 9184 should be made, specifically when it comes to government hospitals and the purchase of life-saving medicines. There should be clear provisions that will allow hospitals to choose and purchase vital medicines and supplies in the shortest amount of time possible, skipping some unimportant steps in the usual procurement process. In the unfortunate event that a supply runs out, mechanisms in the procurement law should be in place that would allow the hospital to procure the said item within the same day.
Lastly, provisions in the procurement law should be made to allow government hospitals to procure QUALITY materials and supplies, even if they have not given the lowest bid price. Cheap medicines and medical supplies, which usually win the bidding process, usually have quality issues, which become more expensive to handle in the long run. 4

NU 12: 4th paper: TOPIC: What pisses me off at the mall by Blue Tiger

What pisses me off at the mall

MALL PARKING

One of the perennial problems facing the ever eager shopper, specially during sales. The search for the best valued item on sale begins with the hunt for that golden parking space.

Sometimes, i drop by the mall just to purchase a specific item or two, either in the grocery, bookstore or in the hardware, and usually looking for a parking space takes more time than my actual stay at the mall to buy the items.

So wouldn't it be great if selected mall stores offered a centralized "drive-through" service for those quick buy items.

The mall can set it up this way; A centralized drive through service is strategically located in one area of the mall. It should have access to the popular house brand grocery store, hardware, bookstore, pharmacy items and other specified items. The customer drives through an ordering station first, where he/ she places the order which is displayed on an order screen for the customer to verify. Once the order is placed, the order is "assembled" and the customer pays for the items and claims it in the next station.

This is highly convenient for customers who just need to purchase few specific items, and can help decongest the parking problem. 4
