Subject: NU12#10 - iCheck - iPad wellness apps by Rhea Jardin

iPad is very popular nowadays for its innovation and for the various applications that can be uploaded to it such as games, videos, newsstands, utilities and sports. What if we can also use it to know the status of our health? Since our eyes are said to be the window of our soul, some diseases and sickness could also be trace through the examination of our eyes. With this comes iCheck, an iPad apps that can be use for self examination of our health through our eyes. The camera on our iPad would scan our eyes and process the data to give an initial and unconfirmed evaluation of our health condition. In this way, we will have an idea on the possible disease or sickness that we may have which we are unaware of.  After the evaluation given to us by iCheck, we can refer the initial findings to our doctors or to a specialist. As the saying goes, prevention is way better than cure. 3

As a commuter, tricycle, jeepneys and buses are my daily companion since they are cheaper than taking a taxi cab and much cheaper than the gasoline that you need to load up on your car. But there are some drivers who take advantage of the rushing commuters and they tend to overload their vehicles with passengers. With this, I would suggest placing an overloading detector device that is similar to what we have in elevators. Once the PUV is overloaded with its sitting capacity, the device would alarm and it would automatically shut the engine off. It would not start until the driver reduces its passengers to arrive at the vehicles maximum capacity. In this way, passengers would not be victimized by abusive drivers who would allow passengers to ride on his vehicle even when there are no more available seats for the commuters. 4

Smoking is dangerous to your health, as what is printed on cigarette packaging. It is not only dangerous to our health, but the cigarette butts that are being thrown out everywhere by smokers are dangerous to our environment. The butts contain toxins and other chemicals that can be released in the environment, particularly in our water system. Butt Fill, a reusable cigarette butt, could help solve the problem in cigarette butt disposal. The Butt Fill is quite similar with the traditional pipe except that it is designed particularly for cigarettes only. The manufacturers of cigarettes should produce cigarettes that have no butts. These no-butts cigarettes will be inserted in the Butt Fill and smokers will be able to consume the cigarette to the fullest, thus no butts will be left out to be thrown elsewhere. The Butt Fill could be reuse over and over again, and the fibrous materials inside it that traps tar and other toxins can be refill or replaced after 2 or 3 years depending on how frequent the smoker uses it. 3

Subject: NU12#8 - Hanging Plants on Pedestrian Overpass by Rhea Jardin

Passing through the pedestrian overpasses in Crossing, Ortigas and North EDSA is like an early sacrifice for the Lenten season because of the high stairs with no escalators provided for pedestrians, and the heat that you will get from the sun since the overpass has no shed. I would suggest that the government should build shed on these pedestrian overpasses and add hanging plants and vines on top of the shed and within the surroundings of the overpass. The plant would shield the pedestrians from the heat of the sun and at the same time would promote fresh air that the passersby would inhale, instead of the pollution, as they grasp their breath from going through the high stairs. This could also be helpful in the preservation of our environment and the promotion of green eco living. 3
