NU12 #12 Molina, Jose Paolo

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Redesigning Braces
Braces are the things a dentist put in your mouth to correct many deformities and misalignments in your teeth.  They are painful at times and can become a hassle because food usually gets stuck between them.
I myself wear braces and I can tell you that my gums have bleed a lot since then because of the loos wirings and the shape of the brace itself which had some hooks..
My proposal is to redesign these accursed things and make it more round. Kind of like in the 80’s box type cars were the “in thing” and then in the 90s the more aerodynamic  cars came and the box-types were suddenly old.
In my proposed braces, they should be curved  so that when it hits the skin the skin would be safe.
A more ergonomic braces would be enclosed and food stuck between teeth would be minimized because there shouldn’t be hooks protruding or any loose wires that sink into the gums.
This is safer because a common thing that happens in people with braces is they have infection in wounds in the gums. This is dangerous to our health because we ingest the secretions of the infected wound and this circulates inside our body.
This would entail costs to cure like oral antiseptics and antibiotics.
Ergonomic braces would be a prevention rather than a cure for such problems which to me is better and is about time. 4

NU12#11 Molina, Jose Paolo -Megaphone in cars

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Megaphone in cars
This is related to the previous idea of standardized car horns. Why not make it a step further and have a megaphone installed in all cars so that the non-verbal communications of cars will become verbal.
Usually only police cars have megaphones because they use it in their police work. For private cars however, I believe that megaphones would also be useful.
Communication between cars is limited to car horns and the problem with that is that as a fellow driver, you are left guessing what the other car wants to do.
I believe that there is a risk involved here so a verbal communication between cars would be good for sending and receiving clear concise messages.
Another use for this is I always notice some people when the drive to their gate, they want their maid or houseboy to open the gate for them. So what they do is they honk their horn for a very long time.
I’m not the one being honked at but I still feel irritated so I thought to myself, what more to the people inside that house who the driver expects to open the gate for them.
A long honk is really irritating that is why if we substitute a megaphone, I guess the stress level would be lower.  One would argue however that this could also be used to irritate more because words can still hurt. But I believe like any other household tool, the key lies in how you use it. 3

NU12# 9 Molina, Jose Paolo - Standardized car horn sounds

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Standardized Car Horns

Horns have different sounds. For trucks you would expect a very low loud sound while in cars you would often hear a thinner more ear friendly sound.
But when a car honks, it just means that you have to pay attention to that car because he could be asking you to move, or he might be warning you that he’s going to pass. There are even times that it’s a sign of emergency.

I’ve even experienced a car behind me frantically honking and I thought it was an emergency so I let the car pass. When the car was beside me, its window opened and the driver pointed to my tires. I had a flat tire!
This is another idea I get during driving. Honking horns can be a source of miscommunication and sometimes even road fights.
Some people use horns to greet other motorists while some use it to express anger. Other drivers just simply appreciate beautiful girls passing by and wants that girl to notice them.
I think there should be a standard horn for general everyday expressions for drivers.
Example: a light sounding horn should mean a greeting like ‘hi’, ‘hello’, or ‘good morning’. While a low sounding horn (like in buses) could mean ‘get out of the way you moron’.
It could be also like a Morse code for cars only with limited meaning.
This horns should be built into all cars so that everyone would be standardized. This will enable drivers to express clearly their intent in honking horns and therefore we would avoid a lot of miscommunication. 4

Revision NU12 #6 Molina, Jose Paolo - pasa charge

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Hi sir,

You noted on your blog that we can use computers <also> to charge our phones.

To put my idea in context, I was thinking of our lifestyle as yuppies. We charge our phones at night. in the morning our phone's battery is full. At night when we go out with friends, that's usually when I experience low batteries.

In biking I believe that you could also use this because when my officemates go out to bike, who's to say that not one of them will have a problem with their phone batteries at one point.

So when that happens I wish that I could just take energy from a friend's phone because there are no computers in bars/restaurants and if every we go out of town camping or on the road biking. I think my idea will really be useful.

I have revised some parts of my idea to put it into context.

Hoping for your consideration

Pasa Charge
Nokia used to be the king of cellphones. They were known for units such as 5110 3210 and other very durable user-friendly phones. These phones last up to 3 days before needing recharging.
Now Samsung has overtaken Nokia with the advent of smartphones. These phones are more advanced because they are capable of doing so many things other than send texts and make calls.
However Smart Phones have a glaring problem for me. Unlike the phones from the early 2000, batteries nowadays last for hours only. My nokia express music phone lasts 2 days before needing recharge. My Samsung Galaxy Note in contrast lasts around 12 hours to 24 hours only.
I don’t like the hassle of running out of battery on important occasions because there might be important calls that can’t get through.
This happens a lot especially when I’m out with friends on parties and my girlfriend tries to call me, there are times that my phone is already empty. This situation could escalate a war because she might think that I’m just hiding what I’m doing. Thus my problem with smart phones.

You can't really expect that there would be available power outlets on crowded bars or better yet, when you go camping out with friends. There are a lot of places that adventurous people go to that they have only mother nature and friends (who owns phones also).
Now there is a thing called Pasaload where a person passes his prepaid load to another person. I was thinking why is it not possible for this to apply in batteries? If my phone has low battery, all I need is an electric cable that enables power from one cellphone to transfer to another phone.

Samsung and other manufacturers should address this problem of the battery and I think what I am thinking is an innovative way to help in solving the problem.
This solves the problem of people using low battery as an excuse because it is easier to borrow electricity from other friend's phone.  (Imagine the happy girlfriends who would no longer have to put up with that excuse J ) 4  <Hi I was just pointing out that there is such a practice device now from computer to cp charger)

NU12 #1 Molina, JP - Sentrep - birthday greetings on Pizzas

Birthday Greetings on Pizzas

One day at the office, my colleague had a birthday. This coworker of mine didn't really have a lot of budget to treat the whole office to some snacks so the plan was to treat only her close friends.
Now one of my other colleagues ordered pizza for the celebrant since he saw that there were only few variety of snacks. Now it is customary for celebrants to at least have a cake and blow candles but this particular officemate of mine didn't have any cake.
So when the pizza arrived I thought to myself that there should be a way to put greetings on pizzas!
Birthday Cakes for me are a bit overrated these days. The celebrant actually doesn't eat them all and specialty cakes are astronomically expensive now. And it's all for the sake of sending a greeting that you could also say it yourself but thought it would be better if you write it on a cake.
So I wondered what if pizza could be used as a substitute to greet someone since I believe us yuppies would prefer Pizza over Cakes because the former can make you full while the latter would just give you stomach ache if you eat too many. And besides that, cakes are full of sugar that is why diabetics are guarded in eating them.
While pizza is a more complete food. It has bell pepper, onions, salami, pineapple, cheese, tomato, olives, ham, bacon, in some cases there also parsley. Hence, it would have protein, calcium, vit A, B, C, fiber, etc. It is also not deep fried so the oil is only minimal.
Pizza restaurants should recognize the fact that people buy pizzas when they celebrate something. And I think they can help hype the celebration when they put greetings on pizzas.
But how to put greetings is one question. I was thinking of putting it on the edges (crust) and by using cream cheese, they can write the greetings neatly. Another possible way is by using bell peppers as letterings for the pizza. 4

Tabletized Sunblock
The sun is the main source of energy on earth. It also gives humans vitamins when one is exposed early in the morning to until 8am I think.
But the sun can also cause cancer when one is over exposed hence some genius came up with sunblock. There are many kinds of sunblock, the more expensive the more they say the protection lasts.
People need sunblock especially nowadays when summer is just around the corner. Many people would want to go to beaches. ( I know I want to ).
I recently started trying to learn swimming and I thought of buying sunblock. The problem is I said to myself I probably wouldn't use it anyway because it takes time and I would have to ask help from someone to put some on my back. I usually swim alone you see.
Hence there is a problem. You cannot fully apply sunblock to yourself. Besides it takes time and even if you have help, it's hard to apply it evenly to the surface of the skin. I am also lazy in such rituals because I'm impatient.
So I thought, applying sunblock should be instant. Hence I thought of the tablet.
This is very convenient because all you have to do is drink it like it was medicine and the effect would be all over your skin. The sunblock has an effect evenly unlike when you spread it. You have the risk of unbalance skin tone.
I also think this will solve a problem with lotions which lose its effect when submerged in water. Sayang! You spend a lot of money for it to wear away with water.
Tabletized Sunblock won't have that. 3.

NU12 # 7 Molina, Jose Paolo Sentrep - Bus Vacant Seats Signs

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Vacant Seats Display in Buses

There are a total of 12,689 number of buses in Metro Manila. 3,732 are in EDSA alone.
I am a bus rider myself and It pisses me off when you wait for buses that are not standing-room-only only to find out that you are the first person in the bus to stand (everyone else is sitting).
I think this is a problem for many people especially the persons with disability (PWD) and the elderly who are not as physically gifted as other people. These people usually wait for buses that they can sit at.
Imagine your lola left to stand because there is no more seat. This led me to the Idea that there should be vacant seats displays on the front of the bus.
It could be like in the parking spaces nowadays where there are sensors when a car is parked. There would be pressure sensors on seats to update the display once someone is seated. This could be expensive at first but I believe that bus companies are earning a lot which means they can shoulder the cost of such technology.
In the meantime, if the bus operators cannot afford it, the conductor can simply count the vacant seats and update the display (which could be just paper by the way) every time the seat becomes vacant or occupied. 4

NU12#5 - JP Molina GPS for taxis - Sentrep

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Philippine Taxis should have GPS and Digital Maps
GPS technology is not as expensive as it used to be. Nowadays it costs less than 10,000 pesos to install one. This means wherever you are, you can see where you are on a digital map on the dashboard.
I got this idea when  I was going to A.Venue Makati for my entrep class food trip. The taxi that I rode had a newbie driver.  He didn’t even know how to get to EDSA from Eastwood City!
Imagine my frustration when I tell you that I also didn’t know where A.Venue was located and how to get there.
So  I took out my smartphone and using the map and GPS was able to navigate to A.Venue.
Now imagine a customer who had no smartphone. This would be a real hassle for the customer. That’s why I’m proposing that all taxis have GPS installed in them.
This solves many problems aside from the one I had above. Passengers sometimes complain that their cab drivers are giving them the runaround and taking the longer route to earn more cash. If we install GPS, then the customer would know the route the taxi is taking from a macro view.
Another problem solved is when your loved ones are waiting for you and worried sick for you because you haven’t texted in the last 5 minutes. Well, GPS will enable them to view the taxi you are riding and where you are by just accessing the internet.
This gives extra security because the driver knows that other people are waiting for their passenger. Drivers with ill intentions cannot take the risk because their prospective victim will have a family who knows their taxi that their loved one took a ride in.
For the operator of taxis, this will help them monitor the performance of their drivers and they can instruct vacant taxis to go to prospective clients in an efficient system. 4

NU12 #4 Molina, Jose Paolo - Sentrep (ID pics in CC)

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Pictures on Credit Cards

A big chunk of our population use credit cards. They are already a part of everyday life because of the convenience of not bringing large amounts of money when you shop and the advantage of paying for expensive items on installment.
A credit card has made its users more liquid.
There are also cards that offer rebates for groceries, medicine, gasoline etc. These advantages are also a reason why people use them.
One big issue with having credit cards is the security. There are many security features on credit cards to prevent different kinds of fraud. Others are standard operating procedures for merchants to protect the users.
One security standard is that when you purchase you should present an ID. This is a hassle for some because what if you happen to forget your ID or maybe what happened with me is that my PRC ID has a very faded picture of me. This prevented me from making the purchase because the picture was not recognizable.
This brought me to think that there should already be pictures of the user of these cards on the face of the credit card. This would ease up transactions and make it more efficient.
I think the reason that they do not do it is because it would be more expensive for the card company to personalize the card not to mention the extra time needed to take a photo from the customer. But I think if the extra effort would result in a better service, then I am willing to wait. 3

NU12 #3 - J.P. Molina - Bright back up light

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Bright Back Light

It is a known fact to all drivers that driving etiquette dictates that you switch bright head lights off when you are on a 2 way street and there is a vehicle in front of you at night. Bright lights can cause accidents because a driver temporarily has impaired vision.

Drivers when faced with a situation where there is an incoming vehicle with bright headlights usually signal to the opposing vehicle that they should turn off the bright light by blinking the bright light himself. And when the opposing driver doesn’t stop, a driver usually turns his bright lights on until the other driver succumbs to the pressure.
That’s what I do!

So I noticed this when I was driving and the vehicle behind me was on bright headlights. For me it was dangerous because I could have an accident when I lose my sight temporarily at night. So I wished that I had bright backlights in order to signal to the driver behind me that he is bothering me just like what I would do if a vehicle in front of me has bright headlights.
The vehicle behind me would have no other recourse but to turn off his light.
Now this also solves another problem of mine.

Aside from the unethical drivers who turn bright lights behind, there was this instance when I was backing up at night when a vehicle behind me backed up also. I noticed that the driver didn’t know that I was backing up so I honked my horn. Because the horn is in front, I think the driver didn’t notice me still so what I did was just to move forward and give way. <blinking led lights? cum intermittent horn?> 3
This could’ve been avoided if I had bright back lights because I could’ve just flashed the other driver so that he would let me pass first since I was the one who first backed up.
Car manufacturers should consider this because it could be an important tool in preventing accidents. Some lawmakers could argue that it could cause more accidents but I firmly believe that those things are still tools and that it depends on the user how he uses it. 3

NU12 #2 Molina, Jose Paolo Sentrep - Reversible Pants

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Reversible Pants

80% of people I know use their pants more than once before washing them. “Sayang sa laba” is a usual phrase you would hear them say.
In one of my company conventions which was a 3 day 2 night event. I noticed that many colleagues of mine wore only 1 pair of pants for the 3 day event. Actually the reason I noticed is that I was also guilty of wearing my jeans more than once.
Then it hit me that if there are reversible jackets, then why shouldn’t there be reversible pants?
This solves at least 3 usual problems that I usually encounter. One is already said earlier. During trips, I prefer to travel light so having reversible pants would benefit me because the people during the trip won’t notice that I’m just recycling my pants (unless my pants stink).
Second is I have limited wardrobe. People like me who rarely shop would automatically multiply their wardrobe by just buying jeans that are reversible.  I believe it would cost more but I am a believer that if something can be used for a long period of time, then it is ok to spend for a premium item.
Third is there are times that due to fortuitous events, your clothes get dirty or ruined. For me, it is very often that my dog gets excited when I go out and he just wants to hug me. The problem is his paw prints would appear on my pants.
It is ok because you can easily remove dry dust but what if it rained and the paw prints were muddy? This is where reversible pants come in. you can just hide the stains for the meantime before you can go home.
Clothing companies should recognize this niche in the market. I believe that the cost may increase at least 50% more but I believe that there is a definite demand for these things as long as the marketing strategy is good. 4
