New response/ideas to constant flooding

                              Floating house

As floods, heavy rainfall continue to be the norm, new city designs must be made to adapt to the ennvironment.

Some of the ideas mentioned in BBC/click are the following:

l.  Floating homes (ideas from Netherlands)

2.  Floating streets

3.  Floating cities

Architect's response to constant flooding/climate change   Some projects in the pipeline at Netherlands include:  floating greenhouse, floating prison, maritime housing estate.  Bangkok which just experienced a great flood is also joining these initiatives.

How about Manila/PHL?  Will this part of the floating initiatives?

The city of Angkor Wat is supposed to be a floating city.  The Angkor Wat area is subject to flooding from constant monsoon rains.  That it failed as a city is another story.  But the structure exists up to now

                         Floating community

                                 Floating homes in Vietnam

                Floating city concept

The house on stilts at the coastal towns and cities in Mindanao are such an example of floating houses.

Global opportunities for Nuclear Power

From Energy and Capital Jeff Siegel

The plan for nuclear power plants in US, including the renewal of licenses are being delayed. The issue is political.  The trade deficit for oil imports amount to $l0 billion a month.  This dirty money was even funding Bin Laden anti US activities.  Jeff Siegel proposes to stop this foolishness by going nuclear.

OECD countries like South Korea, Japan (despite the tsunami and Fukushima meltdown) China, India, and Russia are planning for nuclear power plants.  Their project alone could account for 44 per cent growth in the nuclear power energy growth for the next 20 years.

This will fuel demand for more uranium.  A safer uranium fuel (enriched with molybdenum oxide) will deliver more energy and make nuclear waste safer to handle

Ford closes PHL plants but commits to building more EV

Ford closed its PHL plant in Laguna recently, allegedly on weak domestic demand (I thought it was part of an ASEAN manufacturing base strategy)

However it is committed to  building more electric vehicles.  It will, according to Bloomberg invest $135 million into EV research and has l000 engineers committed to this mission.  They have sped up development by 25% and cost of hybrid system by 30%.

It is an ambitious project for Ford since they only have 3% of the market, while Toyota has 72% of the market.  For hopes to have 1/4 of total  production with EV by 2020.

As of now Ford CEO Allan Mullaly wants to have fuel efficient vehicles as number one priority

Rare earth metals and new method of metals recovery

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Nick Hodges of Energy and capital wrote about new method of metals recovery. Talvivaara Mining has such a unique process:

l.  Ore is mined and stacked in a heap pad;

2.  Bacteria is sprinkled onto the ore;   water makes the bacteria seep into the ore,   fans feed more of the bacteria into the ore.

3.  Bacteria eats into the ore;  and releases chemicals that eat into the ore;

4.  Metals are recovered, and the solutions coming from the process are sent back to the ore heap.

With a little help from nature.

Investing into this kind of mining means access to precious metals and rare earth.  For example, electric cars, the wave of the future would require plenty of battery power, coming from lithium, a rare earth element, (REE)

The subduction of earth's surface cause of volcanic eruption and tsunami

Live curious.

 Java tsunami of 2004

The constantly moving conveyor system cause volcanic eruption (thus the term tectonic eruption rather than volcanic)

1, In the case of Monserrat at Carribean, the subduction of the earth's crust caused Atlantic crust to collide with Caribbean crust;  one of the crust subducted there was friction, the magma leaked , water seeped in and violent explosion ensued.

2.  The great tsunami of Dec 26, 2004 in Java:  the Burma and Java crust collided causing the massive tidal wave.  Such are the powerful effect of the earth's constantly moving conveyor belt system

If know the area of subduction, then we can be prepared for the next volcanic eruption or tsunami.

The earth's conveyor belt system

Live curious

The earth consist of superthin crust (just like an onion skin) that is being moved by molten magma from underwater trenches.  The materials moves out ward and deposits materials at a constant rate.

Proof of this  is the big island of Hawaii.

There is a hot spot there and the ocean floor and the islands move northward at constant rate of 3 inches per year.

Some islands have moved northward several thousand miles away from the hotspot of the big island...

In 65 million years,  Hawaii big island would be in Bering sea (near Alaska)

Every 6,000 years, much of the ocean floor is subducted;  the area would be equivalent to that of the USA

Any application:   it is a dynamic moving earth;  and we have to aware of that and its dangers.  These learnings give us a better understanding of the catastrophe.

Personal rocket from hydrogen peroxide

 Live curious

I just saw a video clip from Nat Geo Amazing on personal rocket powered by hydrogen peroxide.  The flight lasted for 30 seconds and brought the subject over 10 stories high.

I thought the at hydrogen peroxide is used only for treating cancer and for disinfecting wounds.

The reaction of  hydrogen peroxide from a catalyst tank causes hydrogen peroxide to release water and oxygen at temperature of over 650 C, and with velocity of 1000 ms, thus creating the lift, and speed of over 190 kmh.

Hydrogen peroxide propelled rocket

However, the flight which is just 30 secs is very brief.

Nu12 #4 By Marta Fretheim - Mall maps

Nu12 - #4
What pisses you off at the mall?
"Mapplication" – a smart phone map application
There are a lot of really big malls here in Manila. And I find it really easy to get lost or loose direction. There is no real system or organization of the shops either. Unless you spend a lot of time in the shopping malls there is no way of knowing what shops are in the mall and where to find them. Since I did not find any map of powerplant mall I went around to see if there are any maps in the other malls and found a couple in Greenbelt. But not nearly enough, there should be maps placed around the malls on all levels and by all entrances. I find shopping at the malls here in Manila very time consuming and often I end up leaving, its just not worth it.
Since the big malls like Power plant, Mall of Asia, greenbelt etc. are fairly expensive one can assume that most of their client owns a smartphone. This is why I would suggest the malls to create a mall application including all shops, restaurants and cinemas. The application would also use the phone GPS in order to track the customers exact location.  With this app the customers can now just type in a category of shops or a specific shop and get the location and the way there, including distance and estimated time walking there. There would also be maps accessible of the whole mall in order to get a better overview.  This map would have color codes for the different shop categories and floors.
A lot of people with smart phones have internet on them as
well, however I noticed that there is already free wifi in most malls. This is already a good start so that all of their customers can easily download the app when arriving to the mall and start using it right away. There should also be information about the application (preferably besides a traditional mall map) at all of the entrances. 4 <one such thing is sidewalk ads apps or proxiwoo>
This would make the shopping a lot easier and convenient for the mall customers.

Best regards
Marta Fretheim

What pisses you off at the Neighborhood?
"Drain-top" – A roof top drainage system
Even though my house is of good standard, when it rains a lot there is water dripping from the walls and roof. So the cement walls are taking in water. In the kitchen we have tiles, and the other day one of my roommates slipped on the rainwater in the kitchen and broke his shoulder. This can be a bit dangerous and also the house will slowly start rotting down as the walls/roof is leaking. This would also imply that the air we are breathing could in worst-case scenario result in allergies, respiratory infection and other health problems. Experiencing this I came up with an idea to prevent the water leakage and help people in the flooding's.
My suggestion is a multifunction drainage system on the rooftop. I named it Drain-top. Our rooftop is flat and not made to handle more than a hundred millimeters of rain per day. With the climate changing more heavy rain is predicted. That is how I came up with the idea of the drain-top. The "drain-top" will have the shape of a tent but be constructed out of hard materials. The water will be running down the tent shaped drainage system and end up in a pipe that leads the water away and into a container. The water running through the pipes will create electricity, so if there is no power due to the heavy weather the units will have some emergency electricity from their own little supply. Furthermore the water will be filtered and stored in a tank. The electricity necessary to filter the water will be used out of the aggregate from the "drain-top". This way the units will also have fresh water supplies even when there is no electricity. If there is excess electricity this can also be used for in house needs.
So the "drain-top" will be multifunctional, it will not only keep people dry but also supply electricity and fresh water during the heaviest storms. 4

NU12 Idea #4: Recycling Tickets and Receipts by Mariko Franca

Every Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays I eat dinner at fast food restaurants.  I always ask for my receipt but then I usually just leave it on my tray.  Whenever I ride the bus I am given a ticket.  I stuff it in my coin purse or bag and forget about it until such time it starts to overflow.

I know receipts and tickets are needed to confirm transaction of sale and to ensure that the establishment pays taxes.  However, imagine the amount of paper used in making these and the trash accumulated by it.  Bus tickets litter the floor of the vehicle and sometimes inserted in the nook and corners of the bus seat.

At first I thought what if we just use e-tickets and e-receipts.  Like in Singapore, buses use a card that you just need to swipe for your payment.  We can do that for buses but there are times when we need receipts for reimbursement purposes or when filing taxes at BIR.  I think that one very simple alternative we can explore to address the problem in paper wastage and littering is to put recycle bins specifically for receipts and bus tickets in the restaurants and buses, respectively.  The bins will be placed near the door so that the commuters and diners can drop off the papers before leaving.  4

The government needs to help implement this endeavor.  It can give incentives to printing shops that will accept old tickets and receipts.  The shops will recycle these and use it to create new ticket papers and receipts.  Meanwhile, the establishment or bus owners will experience the following benefits:

1.  Lower printing costs because they will get a discount for bringing their own paper (the old tickets and receipts).  They only need to pay for the printing and not anymore for the paper.

2.  It will be good for the company's reputation because they will be seen as caring for the environment.  It can even be their CSR program.

3.  Less litter.

The recycle bin can also have a shredder function to cater to those who are concerned about security.  An example is those who dine in expensive restaurants and pay thousands of pesos for their meals.

Let us end OPEC might.

Live Curious

For a long long time, the Western and the rest of the world have been screwed by OPEC -  lowering oil production quotas and raising prices.  Many common men have been led to believe that oil prices are manipulated by oil refineries and retailers.  They do not know that the cause of the increase are the Arab nations. (and South American oil cartels.)

Jeff Siegel suggests that by raising local production, using fuel efficient cars or hybrid, these countries can yield less clout.  The idea of using the wealth gained from your purchase of their products to hurt the customer is unacceptable.

OPEC must be finished.

What you can learn from the artist Wyland about how to create your business masterpiece

Subject: What you can learn from the artist Wyland about how to create your business masterpiece

The other day an article about the artist Wyland got
me thinking about how one becomes a master of
something...
If you're not familiar with Wyland, he created the
"Whaling Walls."  The Whaling Walls is a series of
100 large outdoor murals featuring images of life-
size whales and other sea life.  The murals sprung
from Wyland's dream of sharing his love of marine
life with 100 communities around the world.
His goal was to bring awareness to marine life
conservation. It took him 27 years to complete--
finishing the last one in 2008. It's estimated that
his murals are seen by more than a billion people
each year.
This made me think about what it takes to be able
to create something of that size and magnitude.
On today's blog, find out the simple artist techniques
you can model to reach your own business goals.
You'll learn:
  • What one thing all artists do that business
    owners MUST do to succeed.
  • Three lessons you can learn from Wyland to
    reach your own goals.
  • The artist technique that all business owners
can emulate--whether you are a beginner or

Wipers In A Building

Now a days there are many buildings that are made of glass. Cleaning a glass outside the building is a hard task for a person. The current process of cleaning a glass outside a building are the following: (1) the person will assemble a scrap folding so that he can clean the glass or there will be a hanging glass machine cleaner with a person riding it. I suggest that in every glass in the building has a wiper outside. The wiper will automatically clean the glass outside the building. Aside from this there will be a small dispenser of water outside the glass building. The wiper and the
water dispenser to clean the glass building outside is like in a windshield in a car. I also suggest that the angle or direction of the wiper will be downward not from side to side, because for decoration purposes and the direction of the dirt. The following are the advantages of having a wiper with water dispenser outside the glass building: (1) no more person who will clean outside, no more risky person who will fall at the top of the building, (2) they can always clean the glass, just one press of the button, and (3) less manpower expenses. The disadvantages of having an outside wiper in every glass building are: (1)time consuming to set up the machine for the wiper and water dispenser in every glass, (2) more expensive to set up, and (3) if it malfunction a person will fix every wiper or the machine that automate it. 4

Lhasa Rail LIne from Beijing

Live curious

Lat nightI watched at night Geo the trip of an American railway engineer from Beijing to Lhasa to marvel at the innovation of the Chinese in railway technology.

The project was started some 50 years ago but the most critical was started 10 years ago at the Tibetan plateau.

The rail covers some 3,000 miles and 48 hours of travel.  It passes through a plateau that covers some 700 miles and at very harsh conditions.  Located at some 5000+ meters, the rail line is even higher than Mt. Apo in the Phil and the US Rockies.  Some innovations were used:

l. The extensive use of medical technology -  high altitude medical technology to lessen deaths.

2. Double locomotives with combined force of 8,000 hp are installed at Golmud to handle the long haul and climb.

3.  There are oxygen generators in the train.  The locomotives are accompanied by a generator for power and more oxygen.

4.  Waste water are stored and are collected by trucks once in Tibet.

5.  The trains are tightly sealed to maintain + pressure.

6.  The trains are monitored not by sophisticated train electronics but by cellphones .  The set up makes the whole set up cheaper.

Highest railway line in the world.

It is an engineering marvel.  Splendid.  Fantastic.

Dalisay Sweets (green house sourcing)

Dalisay Sweets is a food manufacturing company which I work with. Having been in the business for more than a decade; our experienced sales and technical division, know how to find the products our clients need. Premium quality and good business partnerships are what set us aside from the other food manufacturing companies. As we strive to reach more of the global market; Dalisay Sweets guarantees world class quality products and services at very competitive prices. The company is a customizer of fruits and vegetables.
"Climate Change" truly affected our sourcing since the business deal mostly with fresh and perishable fruits. In fact, our Gantt chart for fruits is not consistent anymore in terms of seasonality. The company takes advantage of the low-priced of fruits every season especially for Purple Yam or UBE. Purple is one of our best selling products yet the hardest to source-out because of long period of planting/harvesting, highly perish-ability and high pricing. It will grow only in a stable tropical weather condition. This is our challenge lately because of low/weak supply due to strong and consecutive typhoons which destroying the root crops of our suppliers nationwide.

The core values of our company are food safety, consistency, competitive-pricing and sustainability to all our valued clients. This is the reason we provide an excellent service and maintain being the most preferred food-customizer in the food industry. Sustainability tests our limits on how we can supply continuously the requirements of our clients with current Philippine weather condition. The company explored importation from neighbouring countries but our goal is to support locally sourced raw materials. We came up to a solution of "green housing" which is already proven and tested in USA and Japan. Green housing is by controlling or managing the temperature condition in a enclosed area wherein hasten the harvesting and control supply. With green housing, supply will not be an issue anymore and all of the Purple Yam handling challenges for our company will be solved. We will also have price control advantage due to supply in the period of off-season. We will have tie-up with DTI, DOST and Department of Agriculture to educate properly our chosen suppliers. As a start, we may have our own green housing project then eventually share our knowledge to our chosen supplier for a bigger scale. With this, we are not only solving the company's dilemma but helping our local suppliers. It is hitting two birds with one stone.

We're planning to put up the 1000 square meters greenhouse plant at General Santos where cost of living is so inexpensive. The soil is virgin and rich where UBE can grow abundantly. DLOH (direct labour and overhead) is also cheap so that most of the investment will be into equipment and facility. We'll be expecting three harvest a year versus the traditional harvest of once a year. The total harvest will be up to 50,000 kgs of total UBE raw material. Total investment is 20M-50M for the project alone which ROI expected in 5-8 years. On the positive side, there will be continuous supply which we can take advantage of price on off-season period. Outside the greenhouse plant is the manufacturing plant so that raw material can easily turn to final goods and ready to be delivered to Dalisay Sweets clients.   4

SPENDING HABITS
"Spend whatever is left after saving" a popular advice from Warren Buffet.
As a child, my father instilled to us the value of saving for rainy days. When I first got a job, my father reminded me again to save as much as 40% from my salary. And diligently I did. While my officemates would treat themselves to Starbucks or to Jollibee or Mcdonalds on a salary day, I would politely decline and go home. Every cent is that important to me. One of the reasons why probably at 30 I was able to buy a house and a car is because of how well I handled my finances. Coming from a poor family in the province of Bacolod taught me to value money. I told myself that I will never let myself be poor again. I know how it feels to beg your relatives to borrow or ask money.  It was humiliating.
For four years, I was able to pay the monthly amortizations of the house and the car. I was able to budget our income for all our obligations. But what I discovered is that after paying the amortizations, it did not increase my savings. Why? Because I was busy rewarding myself with material things that I deprived myself of from the start. We finally got what we need and I thought that was okay. My family have a house we call our own and my daughter is studying in a good school.
It was reading Millionaire Next Door and Go Negosyo (reference books of the course) that I realized something is wrong with me now. What happened to my spending habits? I think I have to go back to the basics. Live simply and save 40% of my income just like before. Things are not permanent, my work and our business. I have to do something. Since I don't have monthly amortizations to pay now, my goal next year is to invest in foreclosed houses. This I will later develop and turn it to a profitable business by having it rented. I have to make a choice between investing in the things that I want, buy material things that I consider investment or invest in something that will give financial security. I would rather choose the last one. I cannot just rely on saving my money because I end up spending it. If I buy an investment like a house, I would be obliged to pay the monthly amortization. I realized that people and Iam among them, without pressure and goal become too relaxed with life.  While stile early, I want to save more and invest more. Forget about the material things. They are temporary. Yes it will give me prestige and status but I will lose retiring comfortably if I don't change. 4
