NU#12 New Business Idea by Arlen Buan-Gerona

New Business Idea: Laundry Shop Café
 Arlene-Buan-Gerona
If there are a café bars inside bookstores, and cafés in carwash shops—then why not combine coffee and laundry! Laundry Café shop will make cleaning clothes more fun. Laundry shops are sprouting all over the metro because there is indeed a market for laundry services. Customers would include those who live in condos, students, young professionals. But the disadvantage of the laundry shop services we have out there is that you don't get to retrieve your clothes right away, and there is a minimum quantity usually 3 kilos to avail of service. Also, sometimes you run the risk of having delicate clothes being damaged. A self-service laundry will address all these concerns. And to ease the boredom while doing the laundry, Café Laundry Shop is ideal! J
A cozy lounge will have washing machines, washing detergents for self-service use. Meanwhile, a café bar will offer a wide selection of coffee and snacks. While waiting for the washing to be competed, customers can enjoy free wifi, surf the net, do business work, read books while enjoying a cup of coffee and a slice of cake J 3.5

Electronic Patient Data Card:
Arlene Buan-Gerona
Most of the premiere hospitals in the metro today have a hotel- feel like ambiance and facilities being offered. You would hear piano playing at the lobby, starbucks inside the hospital, valet parkings etc..but in terms of the security and medical services, a lot more is to be improved. I spent almost a week in the hospital taking care of my mum who got hospitalized. I observed few things that were quite disappointing and i thought an electronic patient card will help address the following:
Problems:1. Admisssion took 45 mins because of  lots of forms to accomplish
2.Too many visits/ rounds from different sets of doctors on the first day,   each visit conducts  history-taking interviews, asking same
sets of questions, not enabling patient to take a much needed rest.
                    3. Security is loose
I suggest that all patients be given a sort of like electronic i.d/ patient card that will contain all data needed for medical evaluation such as personal profile and patient history. This will significantly lessen the time of having to fill out so many forms. For faster admission. There will be an option for online registration or online pre-admission .The e-patient card will be claimed at the admission center of the hospital ready to be used. Once claimed, patient will readily be admitted to the room previously reserved online. This e-patient card may be accessed by all medical departments. The e-card will just be swiped in and  printable data will appear on the screen. The electronic patient card will also take away the usual practice of having to take patient history repetitively! Imagining 4 doctors coming into the room one after the other, asking the same sets of questions! With the electronic patient card, doctors will just have to upload the data! There will also be provisions to write the findings and results, to be filled out by  attending physicians or authorized paramedicals for future references. Also, i  suggest that patients' rooms be automated. The i.d card number will serve as the password/key to have an access to the patient room. This guarantees privacy and security of the patient and families. <plenty of spelling mistakes that I edited for publication) 4

Powering Online transactions
Arlene Buan-Gerona

E-commerce/E-marketing is the trend today. Online bank transactions, online payments and online shopping are just some of the few activities done online.  I have yet to experience online transactions oferred for  the following activities:
1.Online grocery shopping
- grocery shopping can be quite a task especially for busy moms, online shopping will provide convenience wherein mums can just shop online for groceries,  can either pay  online or pay it upon delivery to doorstep, either by cash or card ( delivery peron will have
 to bring card terminal )
2. Online purchase of movie tickets
- while nowadays they are offering online reservations for movie seats, there is still no service that will allow one to buy movie tickets online. This will provide convenience as they  won't have to worry if seats are still available for the  desired sched and won't have to cue for tickets which sometimes  takes long.
3. Online reservations for hospital rooms
- for non- emergency cases, like scheduled executive check-ups, scheduled opearations like delivery via cs, online reservations of room will be a nice option, since most of the time, rooms get easily filled up. I remember when i gave birth to my daughter, i ended up waiting in recovery room for 10hours because no room of my choice was available. With the online reservation of hospial rooms, one can have a peace of mind of securing a room of choice upon hospital admission. 4

NU5 by arlene buan-gerona - Solution to MM mass transport problem

DECONGESTING TRAFFIC IN THE METRO
ARLENE-BUAN-GERONA
One of the things that I observe whenever I go abroad is the order and rationality in the conduct of the transport system of a particular country. I can't help but feel bad with the kind of transport system we have. I can only dream for our country to have such facilities, maybe in the near future?!
While I was stuck in a heavy traffic this afternoon, I thought of some ways that could possibly ease the traffic along Edsa. With these practical suggestions, I hope that time comes when I am able to go to my mom's place in Manila for 10 minutes, instead of having to drive from Fort to Manila for more than 2 hours! ( Balintawak Exit to Concepcion Tarlac is only 1hour and 20 mins thru SCTEX) My nanny argued that we would have reached Manila faster if we just walked!
Some suggestions:
1.   Lessen number of vehicles in EDSA
·        Odd/Even Coding Scheme. There should no window hours along Edsa. Even Number ( M-W-F ) Odd numbers ( T-Th-S )
·        Ban all 10-15 year old private cars along Edsa
·        Ban motorcycles in Edsa. There are alternative thoroughfares within the metro anyway
2.   Overhaul  the Public Transport System
Centralize Bus System. In most countries, public transport is being operated by the government or at least by a very limited number of operators. I suggest that we overhaul the system. Categorize it into two groups:
City Buses: Must cover routes throughout the Metro with designated bus stops/ bus interchanges, with specific schedules. It would be nicer if we use mini buses that can accommodate max of only 12-15 passengers for short term travel or in busy areas like Edsa, this shall eliminate long waiting time in designated bus interchange. Having bus interchange will also discipline our commuters to take a walk to bus stop to final destination or vice versa, and at the same time, this will answer our problem of congested buses in busy areas. Jeepneys on the other hand, can take passengers to peripheral areas, but terminal must be within peripheral areas and not along Edsa or in major thoroughfares.
Provincial buses:
First, there should be no bus terminals in major thoroughfares like Edsa. Terminals must be located in South and North exit terminals only in order decongest busy areas. We can use the traditional bus we have now, only we have to categorize them into:
·        Red bus –will have fixed routes and only alight passengers in designated bus stop. Jeepneys and Tricycles can be used to carry passengers to peripheral destinations.
·        Green bus- will operate along routes that will allow passengers to get on and off along the routes except where special prohibitions apply.
·        Both buses must stop at city boundaries terminal and let the city buses take the passengers to the inner cities to relieved Edsa from bus decongestion
3.   Revive waterways and railroad systems
Large cargo vehicle contribute to the narrowing of roads like in Manila, where lots of trucks pass by going to harbours. The revival of existing rail line will allow transport of cargos from piers by rail cars to other destination points. The streets in Manila will be relieved from giant cargo trucks!
We should revive the old times where ferries are used as a mode of transportation. Dead rivers must be revived and cleansed, and the government must propagate the use of our waterways as alternative mode of transportation. I read that there used to be a ferry from Laguna-Cavite, CCP-Bulacan-Pampanga. These water ways can significantly help relieve the traffic in major roads like EDSA and C5.
PNR trains must be improved as well, so that people might be enticed to use this mode. Increase number of coaches and trains and secure safety of commuters. Lastly, I dream for our country to have a bullet train that will take us across Philippine Islands. 4`

NU 2-Spending Habits by ABG

NU12 #2
NEW SPENDING HABITS
ARLENE BUAN-GERONA
Having been married for a year now and being a new mum, has brought several changes in every aspect of my life including my personal financial management; my spending habits have changed in so many ways…
To begin with, I decided to cut my other credit cards. I figured out that I only need 2 cards; one card for my personal expenses and my daughter's, and the other card for household expenses. Maintaining two cards enable me to easily track all the expenses, and I am able to monitor the level of spending I have for personal and household needs. I started to allocate a monthly shopping budget for my daughter and myself. J
I confessed that I used to follow all the sale events of almost all the shopping malls in the Metro, but later I realized that shopping during sale season is causing me more because I get to buy things that I don't really need, but I end up buying anyway just because they're on sale.  My paradigm on Sale has shifted to a wiser and practical attitude. Last week, I went to S&R for some grocery shopping, there was a huge sale going on, nice deals are being offered! I am proud that I am able to stick with my grocery list and ended up buying only the things we need at home. Getting the items on my list at a lower price---that's SALE!
Grocery shopping constitutes big chunk of our household budget. It's becoming my training ground on how to be frugal. J These are just some of the tips I figured out on my own:

·        Shop with a grocery list: I make an inventory of the items left in the pantry and fridge and come up with a list.
·       Prepare a Weekly Menu: I plan for a menu good for at least a week. It allows me to have a complete list of ingredients I need, and this way I am able to maximize every ingredient. I shop once a week to save on gas. J
·        Look for "Specials": Every grocery store has special lane/corner where promos and discounts are being offered. There are also promos by credit card companies. I update myself with all these promos! J
·       I buy in bulk for common items: I do computation and buy in bulk for items that we use so often like shampoo, toothpaste, laundry powder, some seasonings, etc. I look for special deals.
·        Try some local brands: I look for some alternative brands which are more affordable. Pigeon baby soap versus Smart soap gives me 40% savings.
Lastly, I keep my receipts and record the prices of the common household items. I keep an excel file of the pricelist for each store and compare which store offers good deals.:)

NEW PRODUCT DESIGN/IMPROVEMENT
ARLENE BUAN-GERONA
I have been hearing stories and have read some articles on the increasing number of patients suffering from kidney failure and those who require dialysis treatment. I remember my nanny told me stories two weeks ago of all the struggles her dad has to go through for his dialysis treatment. They carry the burden of not only the cost of treatment but foremost the accessibility of such treatment facilities, which is only available in the town proper which is about 6 hours away from their place.  Patients who are not able to move from one place to another for a regular dialysis treatment like senior citizens, physically-challenged, and those who are suffering from chronic pain, must be provided with a more accessible treatment facilities. In this regard, I propose a Dialysis on wheels—Automobile Dialysis Unit.
MOBILE RENAL DIALYSIS UNIT is a healthcare delivery facilities designed to provide on-site dialysis treatment. The primary purpose is to provide convenient, cost effective, quality care to patients with chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis treatment. By providing alternative to the conventional in-centre and hospital based dialysis treatment. It will offer a solution to bridge the existing gap of limited availability for those patients whom because of demographics, co-morbid conditions, or lack of community transportation an alternative. It provides the opportunity for clients to receive the best care and treatment.
SPECS:
The mobile dialysis van is a fully functional unit which works exactly like a dialysis centre This vehicle has the clinical, technical and support staff and is well equipped with the necessary machinery required to perform the standard procedure. This includes dialysis machine, recliner, power backup, and a water tank with water purified through reverse osmosis (RO).
It has a fully automated and remote controlled dialysis chair, which works like a dialysis bed and there is a monitor deliberator and an artificial respirator. It also carries accessories and equipment required to tackle emergencies. The machine and accompanying accessories can be moved into homes and patients can receive the treatment along the bedside
Procedures:
This procedure follows the successful pattern for remote dialysis established over the years in different countries by road and similar concept being utilized on the available mobile medical services in our country; whereby the dialysis machine and others medical facilities needed for dialysis are built in the automobiles.
Trips will be prioritized in consultation with patients, medical staff and the Local Committee. The mobile dialysis unit would generally be used as follows
1. Patients would get medical clearance from the hospital's nephrologist prior to the trip.
2. Patients will be scheduled
3. The mobile unit would drive to the scheduled destination
4. The mobile unit would then be set up on the remote community or in designated location
5 While on the community, the patient, renal nurse and an aboriginal health worker would encourage awareness and prevention of renal disease. 4
