NU#9: New processes at work , study: Paper Tracker Software.
At work, I work with Top Management of the company. After numerous meetings and years involved with micromanagement and daily operations, I have confirmed a certain trend which a lot of times causes major delays in processes, which equates to opportunity loss, and ultimately income loss. This is the documents or paper trails for approvals. It is understood that one process involves a chain of numerous departments. From the time the processing starts, till the time the goal is achieved, the movement is in "snail mode", sometimes, it gets buried or even lost to oblivion.
This problem has, for a while now, been acknowledged, discussed, and yet, not solved. We are not a government office but we seem to be functioning like one – full of "RED TAPE"! The clerk, the boss, or anyone in between could easily block this, and this is possible in each department it passes through.
With the advent of technology, computerizing the whole system is the trend. It has already been initiated but is not yet in full gear. But the computer architects should include in their program, paper tracker software.
All business transactions are encoded and can be traced and studied, but all internal documents released, requested, ordered, should also be encoded, but limited to those involved in each process. This tracker should demolish paper loss. It will also give all concerned a guide on how the document is moving, decreasing delays, and abolishing red tape. It will give you the limitations and deadlines. If all documents are monitored, the concerned will be aware of what needs to processed and how long he has to study, approve or disapprove the request. If it is delayed, responsibility is accounted for.
But I must reiterate that, access to this should be limited to those concerned, and of course top management. 4

NU#4: New products / product improvements: New Generation Emergency Lights
Blackouts are a rare thing nowadays having generators is no longer an uncommon thing. So, one can imagine the major inconvenience one may experience when one evening, you come home and there is no electricity. Since, one relies on generator power, for emergencies, a blackout is a bad experience when the kids still need to study, and you have a ton of reading and work to do. Unfortunately, the generator couldn't be used. Then, I started to wonder also, what could be done if it happened in the hospital, and there was an ongoing OR, IV insertion or code blue in the Intensive Care Unit. For these vital units, a regular emergency light would have no use.
So, what if a new kind of light bulb could be designed. One which can double as an emergency light. The quality or intensity of that light bulb would be equal or at least very close to that when it is using regular Meralco power. This light bulb would charge while it is on regular electricity, so anytime the power has a sudden shut off, it automatically goes on. Since this lightbulb is used as the lightbulb for all the lights, it would be as if there was regular electricity and everything could be business as usual. Now, if it could be the same for the OR lights, there would be no disruption to any procedures. < we have very powerful LED lamps used in biking>
Also, wouldn't it be even better if the LED technology could be used on this lightbulb? This would mean savings on electricity, and convenience for all. Plus LED lights supposedly lasts for around 8 years, so that means these lightsbulbs would not need any changing for that long. What a super saver it would be…. The only thought we need to work on is how much this light bulb would cost. Hopefully, in the long run, it will still be worthwhile savings. 4

New Business Idea: Meals on a Stick (Meal Balls)
Food is one commodity which is a definite necessity. Different ways of eating a meal have been invented and re-invented over and over again. It changes with the time. Current market of commercial food preferences are to the extreme. Sit down several course meals and the fastest fast food are the most current trends.
To succeed in an industry which continues to grow, with mushrooming competition right and left, one must have an edge. I want to look into the fast fast fastfood of the working class. Volume over quality clientele. We would like a meal that is not only hot and fast, I want it hot, fast, most convenient to eat, and even easily eaten on the go.
The most convenient way I could think of is to hold your meal on a stick. Filipinos love to eat especially ones which involve Rice: the Filipino Food Staple. They eat it for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, even for snacks… if they could put pasta in a snack such as fried Mac and cheese, why not fried rice on a stick, why not spaghetti and meatballs on a stick? One which could be on a food stall, or on a jolly jeep, or even in the cafeteria. Everything you could think of which could be shaped into a ball and poked on to a stick.
Breakfast on a stick would be shredded pork tocino, with egg bits and ball shaped rice. Lunch could me giniling, menudo, or veggies with rice balls on a stick. Snacks could range from spaghetti with meatballs, or banana fritters, even pancit canton shaped into a ball, breaded and fried on a stick, ball shaped donuts or even burger patty breaded and fried on a stick. Other desserts could be mango tarts, cakes and pandan jello wrapped in coconut still on a stick.
It's a meal anytime, anywhere, any day, all on a stick. Easy to carry for a cheap food stall price.

NU#1: Culture Change starts with a Smile
I grew up in a hospital. I may not have been as knowledgeable as I am now especially in terms of Medical Care but I come and go from my Dad's office most days seeing all sorts of people from patients, to students to employees and business colleagues. I did not classify them as such, as I do now, but I just saw them as people. As I got older, their distinction and classification evolved as my perception of this workplace also evolved. I realized each one's role in the chain of life in the work place and sensed a certain stiffness and coldness in the atmosphere. A place I once considered a second home, was actually not homey in any way, even if it was a place of service and care. That positive behavior towards us could possibly be more of an obligatory than innate.
It had me thinking about behavior in a workplace. I thought it should be implanted from the roots of people. As I began to experience people and places in the real world, it became easier to distinguish good service and bad service, something I was very eager to analyze, on my own, in our institution.
Aside from places where they are expected to show a genuinely good attitude towards others like upper end institutions, I distinctly remember the school where my niece and nephew went to. In comparing with other schools we applied to, they stood out because of the genuine warmth exuded to anyone who entered the premises, and this dates back to the first time I entered the school. Everyone from the janitor all the way up to the school owner. They not only made you feel welcome and appreciated, but they made it a point that all employees knew every single child and parent. But don't get me wrong, even if they didn't know you, they still exuded this warth that made you love going back to the school. Believe it or not, it still continues up to this day. I know this because, for the same reason, my sister opted to send her son here after the same experience.
This and other experiences made me think back to my dream as I was growing up in my Dad's workplace. I dreamt of a hospital, which was like a hotel. I know, I can't claim Medical Tourism as mine, but that was my dream, but mine was in the sense of how workers act or feel. I thought that from the time a client comes in, they should be pampered with warmth . I thought of having some sort of training on service excellence even before they came in to work so they would have it in their roots to treat everyone like a VIP guest. Of course at that time I wasn't thinking about how this would impact any financial benefit to the institution, I innocently thought that it would be good to enter an institution, any institution in fact, and feel welcome.
I still believe in that dream for our institution. The difference is now, I could, even in little ways, implement a baby step for culture change in the environment of our workplace. I was thinking, "It all begins with a smile." Everyone and everything with a smile, or a certain kindness one can exude. This, should start from the top-down. But the waves should continue on to the client and to the community we serve. If I could make this little change in how we serve our clients (and each other), it could send waves to the community and make their perception turn into greater heights. It's a benefit with no cost. It involves behavioral change that is good for the person, good for the clients, and good for business. It can contribute to making your edge and producing a certain brand for the service provided by our institution. 3
