NU 12 #11 by sugar scalpel -What pisses you off at the school?

NU 12: What pisses me off at the school? What must be done?

Ateneo Graduate School of Business is an excellent business school, maybe one of the best in the Philippines. Its reputation itself is enough to entice budding businessmen/women and entrepreneurs to enroll in them without any marketing effort. But as the saying goes, we will only know about something if we really go in or study them deeper and immerse in it. Such is the case of our course, MBAH in . Right now, after spending more than a year in our course, it has been an enjoyable and great learning experience.

But in any other things, nothing is really perfect. What pisses me off are professors who come into class without preparation. They may have good slides but a few of them are really wasting time in class just discussing stories about their life, connections, their businesses and their accomplishments. They do not realize that we are here to learn about business based on the syllabus and objectives of the course. I hope AGSB will find ways on how to do something about it like school administrators sitting in class once in a while on a "surprise visit", paying strict attention on survey or feedback from students, being strict in inspecting the "lesson plan" of professors before each session and getting feedback from students after each session if the objectives for that session were met. We are not experts on teaching but what we want to emphasize is to further improve the teaching in AGSB so that we will learn more and get the most out of our stay in AGSB.  <am one of them?> 3

NU 12 #7 MBAH by Sugar Scalpel - Pinoy MD

NU 12 Professionalism: New Practice: Pinoy MD Search

In this day and age of lightning fast connection and information technology, there are still other professions & industries that are slow in its adaptation. A noted profession that is a little slow in harnessing the power of information technology are doctors. If you make a survey of practicing doctors, a good majority are still using the archaic patient's chart in their clinic where they write down all the information about a patient including the diagnosis, illnesses, laboratory results, treatment, etc., usually on a piece of paper whose template are archaic in itself and usually given by medical representatives. So, if the secretary of a doctor is absent, the doctor himself/herself or a reliever will retrieve the patient's chart wasting precious time. In addition, if they are out of the clinic and somewhere else and suddenly receive a call from the emergency room of the hospital where he/she is practicing regarding a certain patient of his/her, most of the time its very hard to recall the last time the patient visited your clinic let alone remember his/her illness and the medications the patient is taking. Sounds familiar for most doctors? Yes of course. In this generation, we, doctors, should take full advantage of the technology, invest a little in computers/tablets/smartphones/phablets to be able to make our profession more efficient and productive, and at the same time, make good use of our time.

Now comes Pinoy MD, a google type search engine for doctors with many more features. First, Pinoy MD will include the list of all doctors actively practicing in the country, together with their specialization, clinic hours, clinic or hospital location where they are practicing, telephone numbers and others where patients can see all this information thru a doctor's webpage. Included in the doctor's webpage are the clinical records of all patients but can only be accessed by the doctor with its corresponding codes. These informations are all stored in the cloud. In this way, the patients can make an appointment with their chosen doctor in the place convenient for the patients, the doctor can confirm the appointment and at the same time, the doctor can also immediately review the records of a patient if the patient has already visited the doctor's clinic before. Since these are all stored in a cloud, it can be accessed anytime anywhere and in whatever format the patient or doctor is using based on their device(iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry, etc.)This will make the experience of a patient consulting with a doctor a breeze, and the doctor will be more efficient and knowledgeable about a patient whether in a consultation setting or an emergency setting where complete clinical patient information is just a click away.     3

NU 12#4 MBAH 10B By Sugar Scalpel - Virtual Nurses on Call

Professionalism- New Work: "Virtual Nurse On Call"

MBAH 10B Entrep

Nurses nowadays are plentiful and most of them find it hard to seek employment in our hospitals or clinics. This phenomenon has been the result of the previous nursing boom of the early part of the 21st century when the demand worldwide, especially in North America, the favorite destination of our nurses because of its better paying employers, far exceeded the available supply. As a result back then, the Philippines exerted tremendous efforts to increase our nursing course admissions and nursing schools to be able to produce more nurses to supply the ever increasing demands. It even forced a lot of already practicing physicians to take up nursing courses to be able to take that opportunity to work in the "land of milk and honey". Alas, the economy worldwide, most especially in North america, turned sour and took a downward course forcing many hospitals in North America to cut down on healthcare cost gravely affecting the employment of Filipino nurses in the United States. The glut of unemployed nurses in our country is the result of that economic downturn. So, what opportunity can we think of to help our many unemployed nurses who spent a lot of effort, time and money for their education only to languish in their unemployed state?

I propose to put up an NEA or Nurses Employment Agency all over the country and encourage all unemployed nurses to apply and be included in the pool of employable nurses. Once there is already a master list of the available nurses, the NEA will develop a website to be advertised in the media(print, TV, radio, online) all over the country. This website will serve as portal wherein any hospitals, clinics, hospice, nursing homes, homes for the aged, resorts or even homes in need of nurses to take care of a sick relative all over the country can request for a nurse or nurses on a 24/7 basis. For example, a big hospital in Quezon City experienced a sudden shortage of nurses for this certain day in the operating room due to absences and the increased demand on that day due to the unusually high number of scheduled operations that day, they will simply request online from the NEA and the NEA will provide the requested number of nurses with operating room experience and expertise to augment the needed nursing manpower for that day. The hospital will also pay online as the request is made based on the prevailing rates of nurses for that particular locality with a certain premium(depending on the time, i.e. with night differentials if it falls on 10pm to 6am shift, holidays and other labor mandated add ons). The NEA will then provide the requesting hospitals with the credentials of the nurses in advance via online (including the ID) that they will send for proper identification. The agency will then charge an additional 20% of the transaction fee as their cut or service fee. Another example is when you have a terminally ill relative in Cebu who is for discharge from a hospital and you worry about who will take care of them at home. All you need to do is go online again as already mentioned above and request for the needed nurse or nurses with experience in taking care of terminally ill patients to help you in taking care of your sick relative. In this way, you earn money for the agency as a business and at the same time help our nurses find meaningful employment wherever they may be, plus the added bonus of augmenting the staff of hospitals on a temporary basis anytime, helping us take care of sick relatives at home especially if we do not have the experience and many more benefits.    4

NU 12 #3 Posting on Line of Available Parking at Malls

What Pisses You Off at the Mall? Parking!
NU 12 #3

I think one of the most annoying and time consuming efforts going to a mall is finding a parking space especially during peak hours. This has been a problem getting bigger by the day because of our increasing population, a lot of cars nowadays which is increasing in numbers and malls which are also getting bigger and bigger but with parking spaces not proportionately adjusting to the increasing size of the malls, add to that the almost monthly "sale" being offered by those malls. The consequences of all these are costly in terms of our wasted, unproductive time waiting in line for parking space vacancies, wasted fuel, increasing air pollution due to the many cars idling while in line for parking and many more.

What i suggest is allow malls to post their available parking spaces online at real time. Since the availability of the monitoring system of parking spaces, we can now see when we enter mall parkings the available slots on what floor are available. This information can be posted online at real time so customers can view them before actually going to their preferred mall. What i suggest is make the available parking spaces be available for reservation by customers online. The process will be like this: I want to go to the mall at 1pm to 3pm to do my shopping for gifts for my kids. I then go online, look at parking spaces available, reserve a parking space for 2 hrs. at 1pm to 3pm, pay online via credit card, mall will reserve the parking space at the designated time. The policy of the mall shall be 2 hrs. minimum time for reservation at P100/2hrs. Customers shall come on time and will be given only 5 mins. waiting time after which the parking space will be given to walk in customers already in the mall. Mall managers will only allow vehicles to enter parking areas if they have reservations done previously online and allow entry of walk in customers only if reserve customers do not arrive within 5 mins. of their reserve entry time. This will encourage us to come on time, otherwise we wasted P100. In case the customer of the reserve parking space arrives on time and uses the parking space and at the same time exceeded the 2 hours reservation, he will be charged higher P100/hr for the excess time, as penalty for exceeding the time which would have been available to another customer and at the same time teach us to stick to our designated plan to buy gifts only in 2 hours as we previously want, teaching us to use our time wisely and avoid waste of time. In this manner, malls and customers can be more efficient with their time management, customers will be more precise with what they will do in the mall, parking spaces will be utilized more efficiently and mall will earn more while customers will be able to accomplish his/her task on time and more conveniently.  4
