NU6 by MOF, STR Reg

Dear Prof:
Just thought of this and decided to write it for NuiDEA complation (not part of the requirement already)
NUidea7-         Cloaked Defender
Banks are almost always synonymous with money. That's why they have a lot of security measures in place in and outside their premises but still bank theft poses threat even to the most secured bank in the country. The bank vault normally is the safekeeper of the bank's  "cold cash"  and other high valued monetary items. Most of bank related crimes involves the forced opening of vault that' why I come up with this NUidea7 which can deter/mitigate effects of these type of crimes.
Name:             Cloaked Defender
Purpose:          to safeguard the bank's vault and deter theft
How:                Every bank vault has a time delay lock but ever wonder why vault theft is still up until now?  It is because of forced opening/unlocking of vault by criminals using the authorized bank personnel access. The Cloaked defender will help solve this-  security passwords will be designated into two types. One is for the regular/legal purpose and one for emergency purposes. Both access types can open the vault without hassle but the second one, once used will automatically trigger alarm to designated areas like nearest police station, barangay post, and other areas where help can be sought in time.
Alarm will only sensed by the designated posts and will not even give a hint to the criminals of what lies ahead of them. 4
Thank you.

Nu 6 - New Spending Habits - Armando Coloma Jr.

NEW SPENDING HABITS

In order to better save money is to monitor spending. Prioritizing needs and limiting wants is an overused cliché.
Practicality is the key to have better spending habits. For example, generic medicines are cheap, while those made by popular pharmaceutical companies are far more expensive, even if they have the same strength. Go for generic.
Buy by the bulk. The "tingi" practice actually costs more than buying in large quantities. Take advantage of the discounts.
Sometimes, you can't help but buy on the spot when strolling at the mall. To minimize impulsive buying, leave your credit card/s at home and bring just enough cash for what you need to purchase.
It's ok to splurge once in a while, but only when you have enough savings and all the necessities have been prioritized, and payables have been settled.
Avoid using credit cards as much as possible. If you are after the points (miles, etc.) make sure you set the payment aside, and pay at the bank ahead of the bill. Remember, spending money you haven't earned yet is a no-no!
List all the monthly expenses and allocate your income. Having knowledge of the spendings will help you be wiser in handling money.
Some people like to own status symbols, such as expensive cell phones, cars, etc. to have the image of "can afford." This is OK, except when these are bought just to show off, especially when you have neglected other important things for that. Living beyond means as a way of life will take its toll sooner or later. 3

THE NEW ME
By: Teodorico T. Lasin

The latest World Health Organization (WHO) projections indicate that at least one in three of the world's adult population is overweight and almost one in 10 is obese. Being overweight or obese can have a serious impact on health. Carrying extra fat leads to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke), type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis, and some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). These conditions cause premature death and substantial disability.
My Body Mass Index (BMI) last October 31, 2011 was 26.4 kg/m2 (calculated by dividing my weight, 85.4 kg with the squared of my height, 1.80 m) and considered as OVERWEIGHT based on the standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults shown in the following table.
BMI
Weight Status
Below 18.5
Underweight
18.5 – 24.9
Normal
25.0 – 29.9
Overweight
30.0 and above
Obese
Given the above scenario, starting October 31, I have decided to change my lifestyle by doing the following:

Ø  Exercise every morning and afternoon
·         Treadmill/Stationary biking for 30 minutes
·         250 Sit-ups
Ø  Low-carbohydrate / high-protein diet
Ø  Active lifestyle (Using the stairs instead of elevator, frequent walking, etc.)
Ø  Daily weight monitoring
After a month of religiously implementing the above activities, my BMI as of December 2 is 24.8 kg/m2 (equivalent to 4.9 kg weight loss). Based on the progress of my weight loss program, I am expecting to meet my target BMI of 24.3 kg/m2 (still 1.7 kg to lose) by December 13, 2011.

This is just the beginning of my journey towards having a healthy, active and happy life. I am sure I can meet and maintain my target goal by having self-discipline, right attitude and focus on this program.

The greatest wealth is health. 4

Former Student Reports New Business, her ideas from NU6

A former student whose parents own a large and modern meat processing company in Central Luzon recently texted me that she, on a personal capacity will open soon a restaurant in a mall.  Just recently, they launched a processed meat, using a different kind of preservative, that is not health threatening.

That is great. and this blog greets the concerned student, author of the mind boggling Abes Meat products case study.

Congratulations

Nu6 by JC - Solution to Double Parking

"Innovate or DIE" "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Double Parking
By: JC
I live in a baranggay very near to Makati Central Business District.  The upside is that we are near the fire stations, police stations and hospitals.  However our location is also strategic such that the storage houses of restaurants are also conveniently located here.  Right beside where I live is the warehouse of one popular restaurant in Metro Manila.  Aside from their fine dining restaurants located in the malls, this food business also caters during weddings and birthdays.  Our resto neighbor has 3 big trucks which transports tents, tables and chairs for large catering contracts, they have 3 smaller trucks for food delivery to their restaurants and 5 motorcycles which I assume serves as runners for urgent restaurant needs.  All these trucks and motorcycles then park in our street because thir warehouse parking space is only enough for one truck.
These parked trucks and motorcycles obviously create severe street congestion inside our baranggay.  The traffic annoys the car drivers passing our street, and this often makes them honk their horns mercilessly keeping me awake all night.  In order to solve this recurring noise barrage in our street at night, I suggest that the restaurant stops parking their trucks on both side of our street.  Every time I hear the horns of the car outside, I force my self to think of the solution that I can present to our neighbor-owner.  My goal is to create a solution that will minimize his investment and is very simple to implement.  I have came up with solutions such as parking on the street near the church in our baranggay.  But I know he wont allow it since it would be too far and his security guard can no longer watch over his trucks.
Here is the best solution I have thought of.  We are given 3 big trucks, 3 small trucks, 5 motorcycles, one parking for big truck and a two-lane street.  I will now assume that the owner of the restaurant does not want to lease an extra parking space.  So, my suggestion is to utilize his own trucks as his parking space.

Since we are only left with 3 big trucks to think about, 1 truck will go to the garage and only the remaining 2 will be parked on our streets.  I know that it is illegal to park in the streets in the first place.  But since it appears that the restaurant has the backing of the baranggay and nobody bothered them for 10 years,  minimizing the nuisance these trucks are making in our Baranggay will be more than welcome.  I have made some visual estimate of the car sizes and I know my solution will work.  This proposal is very simple, workable and will employ very minimal investment from the restaurant owner.  I am planning to talk to the owner about this in a very casual way.  I hope I'll see him soon. 4

Nu6 What Pisses me off at the Mall

NU 6 PAPER – WHAT PISSES ME OFF AT THE MALL
ENTREPRENEURSHIP by Mr. Jorge Saguinsin
4th NU6 Submission
Submitted by R110083
October 30, 2011
By and large, going to the mall ought to be a pleasant experience;  one that would always entice me to keep going back. Unfortunately, lately, something has annoyed me in the malling experience as to make me think twice of going unless necessary so.
The one thing that I find annoying lately is the noise.  The pervasive pollution created by in-house music, coupled with noise from establishments particularly from amusement centers and restaurants is too much as to prevent me from thinking clearly.  The atmosphere within the department store has gotten so noisy as to suggest an ambiance of being in the marketplace. This makes me rush to accomplish the errand I was there for and have me head for the exit at the soonest possible time.
What this means for the mall management, I hope they realize, is diminished customer traffic because of reduced customer contact and therefore results to lower revenue.
What may I suggest to address this concern:
To the extent that I can control my circumstance, here are MY COURSES OF ACTION:
·      Delegate the errand to another so as to avoid the unpleasantness altogether.
·      Arrange meetings and socialization away from the mall scene.
·      Choose malls which have considerably addressed this concern and have kept the noise level to a tolerable minimum.
COURSES OF ACTION FOR THE MALL MANAGEMENT:
·      Provide specific areas where comfortable silence may be enjoyed… quiet pleasant shopping experience may be provided.  Designate these areas with signs that clearly suggest customers may enjoy more quiet and peace. Background Music may be supplied but a decidedly lower volume and with emphasis on background and not overwhelm conversation.
·      Seek and install noise reduction technology… employ Green architectural designs that will eliminate noise pollution.
·      Offer head or ear gear of some sort for free or rent for those who want to protect their ears from the assault that comes with certain areas of the mall.
By addressing these concern, mall management will gain favor with customers like myself and I am not in the minority.  They will be able to increase revenue and customer loyalty from customers who have the power to impact their bottomline.

NU3 Finally Get Things Done Without Stress by M080037

NU3 – Finally Get Things Done Without Stress
M080037

It has been a perennial problem of mine keeping things tidy: Papers, Books, Inboxes, notes. For years, I have been so disorganized that I tend to forget a lot of things. I fail at excelling primarily because of disorganization. I purchased a lot of organizing tools, folders, notebooks, Todo software, etc. to no avail. I find myself in trouble even more.

I realize that the reason I am disorganizes is that I allow things to stack atom each other. I often leave emails in the inbox; too lazy to move them to another folder. Well, one reason I have resistance moving them to another folder is because I have created a lot already. I guess finding a system that makes you to take action immediately, or have an efficient system for storing emails that need action in the future.

Reading Getting Things Done helped me a lot. I began creating these folders:

·      Need Action Now - Obvious, Ill work on the stuff in here untill it's done. Disaggregating complex task and create sub tasks and project folders if needed.
·      Delegated - Check later for updates - These are stuff I asked someone else to do. These are the things I will keep asking my staff from.
·      Waiting for Reply - These are emails and tasks I need more info about.
·      Someday - these are emails, folders, brochures, files that I want to take on someday when I am not too busy.

The key is to keep inbox empty so I can take in more. Decide on an item as I encountered it the first time: do I need further details, then I should move it to Waiting. Can someone else do this for me, then I put it in Delegated and inform the person about it. Do I need to work on this now...er...later but soon? Then move it to Action. Is it a nice book? Wow, I'd love to read thatsomeday, let me put that leaflet on my Someday file.

Inside the Someday and Waiting folders, there can be sub-folders named after the project. Files like timelines and important data can be stored there.

This, I believe will allow me to efficiently take on new tasks, be less worried by things I might forget doing and go crazy. 3

NU5: MICRO-DIRECT POSITIONING SYSTEM (MDPS)

MICRO-DIRECT POSITIONING SYSTEM (MDPS)
By: R090205 (CTG)

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system which is widely used nowadays especially in almost every mobile phones and even cars to track their directions to their destinations. Google Map and Google Earth use GPS to scale areas across the globe in 2D or even 3D view, including descriptions, of the roads, different establishments, etc.

The author imagined if this GPS can also be applicable in a much smaller scale. Have you ever experienced being frustrated looking for your missing things inside your house or car when you need it most? Have you ever experienced roaming around a large mall, let us say SM Mall of Asia, looking back and forth for a certain establishment, spending so much time, only to find out that it was just around the corner just because you are not familiar with the place even you seek the help of a mall directory? Being the boss, have you ever felt the need of tracing the whereabouts of your sales, marketing and delivery personnel, etc. in the field even they are submitting sales or service reports?

With all of these in mind, the author thought of a system that can address the said concerns. The author would name it as Micro-Direct Positioning System (MDPS), a system which is quite similar to GPS, however, instead of using satellites revolving around the earth, this system will use tracking devices installed to triangulate and know the specific position or location of certain things, person, establishments, etc.

The MDPS will use microchip that can be placed virtually anywhere and anything which can be traced by the tracking devices. This system can also be in the form of applications installed on mobile phones.

MDPS may be used on the following:

1. School
    • In Harry Potter movie, they use the Marauders Map for them to know where to go and who is coming. This inspires the author to actually think of this new idea.
    • The microchip can be embedded in the school ID that must be worn inside the school premise at all times.
    • The MDPS in schools can be used by the Administration to track the whereabouts of the students. Hence, some violations by students may be avoided like cutting classes. The system can also be used in tracking and locating the whereabouts of the school personnel and instructors.
    • The students can also use the system on locating their rooms and other school facilities by using the applications installed on their mobile phones. This will be very useful especially during the first day of classes and the student is not yet familiar on the school premises.
    • The system can be used in the libraries, wherein the microchip will be embedded in every book or reference material so the user can locate the specific shelf and location of the needed book or reference material.
2. Mall
    • Just like with the application of MDPS in school, mall goers can locate in an instant by using their mobile phones the establishments or store they need to go.
    • The system can also be used as a directory in which the user can know the details/description of different establishment such as the products and services they offer, promos, prices of their products, etc.
    • Mall goers can also track available slots on the parking area using the MDPS.
3. Office
    • The microchip can be embedded in the company ID that must be worn inside the office premise at all times.
    • The MDPS in offices can be used by the Managers to track the whereabouts of the personnel especially those who are on the field like sales, marketing and delivery personnel.
    • The system may also be used to track the office tools like stapler, puncher, etc. to avoid spending so much time looking for it when you needed it, which is commonly happening in an office set-up.
4. Theme Park/Coliseum
    • The system can be used as directory for theme park. You will know exactly where you are standing upon using this system.
    • Just like with the other applications, this system can also be used in a coliseum in which you will know the location of your seat even without the assistance of the coliseum staff.
5. House/Car
    • MDPS may be used to track the things inside our homes or cars which are commonly misplaced like remote controls, eyeglasses, keys, etc. Wow 4 (di ba overkill- cost benefit)
The applications of MDPS can be considered limitless. The system is perceived the best tracking system of all time.

NU6 - Ideas on Kinect

Innovative Ideas for Kinect by R090206

It's only 47 days before Christmas. For the kids, it's about time to ask their Mom and Dad to buy them gifts. In these days, game for them equates to gadgets and consoles. One of these famous consoles is the Xbox 360. It now comes with a new accessory which is called Kinect.
For those not familiar with Kinect, it is defined in Wikipedia as:
Kinect for Xbox 360, or simply Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal) is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game console. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands.
Simply put, it is what you attached to your Xbox so that you can play the game using your own body as a controller.
This kind of technology is not only applicable to games. In fact, in February 21, 2011, Microsoft released a non-commercial software development kit for it. Since it's relatively new, listed below are some of my ideas on how to use the Kinect other than gaming. Some of them may or may not exist already.
The obvious application would be on presentation. In fact, I've seen one on a seminar. However, this needs to polish even more. It would be a good idea to integrate this to an office application like Microsoft PowerPoint so that non-technical users can be able to create amazing presentations. Imagine moving to the next slide at the flick of a finger, or maximizing the slide by a simple gesture.
Using the movie Minority Report as an inspiration, the Kinect can be used as a User Interface in a computer. Like the movie, the user can simply type in the air, point his fingers and wave then the computer would automatically execute the said command.
Again using a movie as an insight, the Kinect can be used in Engineering work like that of Iron Man. Coupled with 3D Glasses, designing sophisticated machines would be easy and interactive. It's like touching the real thing. The user can enlarge the design, rotate and tweak some parts using just his hands and fingers. No need to memorize cryptic commands.
In the late 70's up to early 80's, there is a famous cartoon named Diamos. It's a robot where it imitates the movement of its user. The Kinect can be used like a "Diamos" of some sort. Of course controlling a big robot would be very far from the future albeit possible, the Kinect can control small robots or even just robotic arms. Imagine a doctor doing an overseas operation and controlling the operation via Kinect; or a bomb being defused by a robot being controlled using Kinect; or an astronaut using it in space to explore. It's basically using a robot to keep the user in harm's way while still being in control.
The Kinect can also be used in learning some skills. Music or drawing can be trained with it. The Kinect can observe the fingers in a piano or guitar and correct the user for each wrong position. It can also observe the movements while learning to draw and suggest possible improvements. Other skills like learning to bike, skate and such, the Kinect can observe your movement and give feedback to do it properly.
It's true that Kinect is now famous for its games. But a kid's toy, when viewed using a wild imagination and thirst for innovation can also be a man's plaything.

NU6 - Ideas for HP Touchpad

Ideas for HP Touchpad by R090206

As seen in Technology news, Hewlett-Packard is now offering their HP Touchpad for developers at a price of $150. This is still very cheap price for a usable tablet.
The HP Touchpad is HP's first try in the tablet industry. It was launched in July 1, 2011. Our very own Manny Pacquiao was even an endorser of it. Nevertheless, the Touchpad could not compete with the infamous iPad and Android Tablets. On August 18, 2011, less than seven weeks after the TouchPad was launched, HP announced that it would discontinue developing the Touchpad. The following day, Touchpad was available across the United States at a dirt price of $99! Stores sold out their inventory in record time!

This author is not about to discuss the life of the Touchpad. Instead, I will provide a list application that may be helpful to the device. Since developers are given an opportunity by HP, might as well take it and improve on the product.
Looking at the history of the product, we can say that the target market for the touchpad is the middle class. It's mostly consumers and we can presume that none of it is used for business. Some of it just bought the thing for its very cheap price. Having analyzed the market, the product to be created must be usable and has a simple interface. Games are a good candidate for the application. It also must be cheap if not free. Business Applications are out of the question.
One usable Application is an Android Emulator. It is an application that can execute Android Application in its own sandbox. It said that RIM's Playboook will be equipped with one, if it's on one platform, why can't it be created on the Touchpad. Imagine being able to execute most of the Android Apps which is like having thousands of Apps in your fingertips. As of my research, the Touchpad can be dual booted but there is no emulator available yet.
Another useful Application would be an Emulator for legacy application. This would be able to execute old application or games from the desktop. Classic games like Pacman and Mario where the installers are available everywhere will be able to run. Or maybe a favorite chess program running on DOS would be helpful. Games like this might be available on SNES or console emulators but it will be more useful if it can execute more than games.
For developers, researching the top 10 games in the Android Market or iOS's App Store would be a starting point. These games already have a captured market, having them on the cheap Touchpad would attract more people into the device.
Developers can also interface the Touchpad with other HP's product like printers or server. Although admittedly this will veer off from the target market, it may make the business sector take a second look at the device.
To some, the Touchpad might be dead. Some say HP is just clearing their inventory in giving out Touchpads to developers. But this author views it as an opportunity to tap a small market and control it. If HP then decided to continue with the Touchpad, your market is already at hand and will only continue to grow more!3

NU6 Paper 6: R090204 - On Line Borrowing and Lending

Although not as commonplace as in other countries, more Filipinos now organize garage sales or yard sales, usually in their homes, to sell personal belongings or household items that they no longer want or need. Surplus stores are also available for customers to select from a wide variety of previously owned items that one may want to purchase - from sala sets and electronics gadgets to home appliances and baby strollers. In addition, sale of second hand garments and accessories in ukay ukays continue to be widespread.

The increased usage of social media has added another dimension to the dynamics of selling used items and personal effects. Online sellers now leverage on the use of social networking sites like Facebook and Multiply to sell pre-owned belongings like designer bags and clothes. These items are often advertised as pre-loved or pre-owned.

A successful transaction in any of the mediums described above indicates a change in ownership from the seller to the buyer. Finality so to speak, in that what was previously yours is now considered as the possession of the other party and any form of attachment to the object must be severed. For those, however, who have personal belongings or household items that they do not use or need as often but are still not willing to part with, what happens then? In most cases, these items end up in the storage or the attic collecting dust over the course of time.

In order to maximize the use of such items, an idea is to create a venue by which these owners can have others loan or borrow that item for a defined period of time and at an agreed borrowing fee. In this way, owners are able to maintain ownership of their belongings yet earn some income in the process. On the other hand, borrowers are able to find value in that this saves them from having to purchase an item that they will not need or use for a long time. One example could be the need to borrow a saxophone for a school play, or a bike for an office activity for the weekend or a costume for a social engagement.

The venue in mind is an online portal for better visibility and wider reach. This online portal will be very much like a social networking site in that it enables potential lenders to post the items that they want to lend out. As easily, potential borrowers can navigate through the site to search for the items that they wanted or needed to borrow. This channel can serve as the medium for lenders and borrowers to discuss on their terms of agreement as in the borrowing period and for how much this will cost, how the item(s) will be sent to the borrower and how the borrower will return the item(s) to the lender. The concerned parties can have the option of meeting up in person or course the transfer of the item via courier. Linkage to courier companies can also be coursed through this portal. Payment facilities can be integrated in the site as well. A service or commission can then be paid to the site owner for administration and maintenance services. 4

An old adage goes; another man's trash is another man's treasure. In the case of a social borrowing site as described above, another man's treasure remains to be his treasure and is another man's treasure (for a limited time).

NU6 Paper 5: R090204- Juan Pass

Malls have become part and parcel of the leisure and recreation time of Filipinos. Malls are not only associated with shopping but are also closely referred to as a place to hangout in, socialize in and connect with other people. Malls are very much integrated into the Filipino psyche that a 2008 Nielsen Media Research indicated that "around 80 percent of Filipinos go to shopping centers and around 36 million people visit shopping plazas once or twice a month."[1]

The high affinity of Filipinos with shopping malls and the sheer number of people who visit these establishments, thus, bring with it a lot of logistical challenges and considerations. These areas include safety and security, crowd control, foot and vehicular traffic flow and sanitation concerns among others. Personally, however, the most trying aspect of going to the mall and holding office in the vicinity of a mall are parking related.

Finding an available parking slot is often times already a challenge in itself. What makes it more irksome is the long wait in line to get to the parking attendant to pay for your parking ticket and get out of the vicinity. In the shopping-office-residential complex that I work in, this wait can last for even as long as 30 minutes. This is a familiar scenario I am faced with every Friday night after work and I find myself waiting in line together with mall goers also heading home. Not only has it been inconvenient to maneuver through the traffic inside the parking area but also costlier as the waiting time gets added to ones parking fee. The same is true for other malls in other areas that I visit. There are instances wherein I also experience the long wait to the exit especially in the evening nearing closing hours when those who dined out or those who watched a movie also head out. I expect the situation to even be more strenuous as the Christmas season draws near and as malls hold pay day weekend store wide sales and midnight madness sales.

In order to help facilitate ease of entry and exit into parking areas and improve the traffic flow and payment facilitation, an idea is to implement the use of proximity cards or prox cards as a payment system. Motorists can just tap their prox card in a terminal as they enter the parking area and tap out into the exit terminal to make their payment. In this way, the need to issue parking tickets or parking cards during entry is eliminated. Also, the need to have parking attendants collect payments during exit is voided and queuing time is managed.

To eliminate the need to maintain multiple proximity cards for different establishments and satisfy different consumer needs, why not have one card that will be accepted in the different malls and establishments. To make it even more useful and practical to maintain, this proximity card can be the one card that Filipinos can use for their transportation, commute and motorist needs. This one card can thus be called the Juan Pass that can be used to facilitate access and payment of parking in different malls and retail areas. The Juan Pass can also be used as the payment and access system for the use of the MRT and LRT, the use of buses and shuttle services, and perhaps even e-jeepneys, among others.

The idea is to have the Juan Pass be a re-loadable proximity card that can be made available through leading establishments like convenient stores and sales kiosks in the train stations, bus terminals, mall concierges and retail outlets that sell prepaid cards. Value or load can be added via these channels as well. Acceptance and use of the Juan Pass can be extended later on as a means to add load to mobile phone services and as a means of payment to partner retail merchants and establishments like convenient stores, restaurants, supermarkets, and even gasoline stations as well.

Use of a proximity card can help ease logistical problems and inconvenience in malls. At the same time, it can also help integrate retail establishments with the transportation and motorist needs to make it a more pleasant customer experience. Lastly, the use of a single card can also promote integration of products and services on the part of retails and merchants from various sectors and industries.4

NU6: FUN & FEAR THEORIES: PROPOSALS AND IMPROVEMENT

FUN & FEAR THEORIES:
Proposals and Improvements
By: R090205 (CTG)

Upon browsing the Facebook, the author came across with a video that inspired him to come up with more creative ideas. The video, about piano stairs, is one of the ideas of Thefuntheory.com. It shows how the piano stairs changed the behaviour of the people to use the stairs instead of the escalator. Because of the fun way using the piano stairs, more people tend to use the piano stairs than the escalator. The piano stairs help the people to have simple exercise through walking while having fun.

Fun theory is an initiative of Volkswagen in which they believe "that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better."  This made the author think of more ideas and propose improvements to some existing theories.

1.     Red Carpet Photo Shoot Stairs
    • The purpose of this idea is the same with piano stairs, but instead of using piano keys with sound on the stairway, the stairs will be covered with red carpet so people can feel the prestige and glamour walking on the red carpet, just like during Red Carpet Premier of a blockbuster movie.
    • Just like celebrities or royalties, people can pose for a picture at the end of the stairs that will be shown on a monitor placed directly in front of the stairs.
    • Sound of applause or drum roll maybe added for more fun.
    •  This may be installed inside the malls so people may opt to use the stairs instead of escalators or elevators. In this way, people will feel better not only because of the feeling of glamour and prestige, but also they did a simple exercise through walking without them even noticing it.  4 Wow
2.     Sporty Garbage Bin
    • One fun way to motivate people to throw their trashes properly on garbage bins is through this sporty garbage bin.
    • Filipinos love basketball. The idea is to incorporate playing basketball in throwing trashes on the garbage bin.
    • The garbage bin will be designed like a basketball game in an arcade.
    • When someone threw trash on the garbage bin, the bin will respond with a sound effect like "three point shot!", "nice shot!", "ring less," etc.
    • Every throw or "shot" will have corresponding scores, so people will be encouraged throwing more on the garbage bin.
    • This sporty garbage bin will not be limited to basketball, hence, this can be modified and relate to other sports like football, soccer, baseball, etc. 4
The author admits that the fun theory might only be effective at certain extent. This gives more room to think of other ideas that might be well suited for Filipinos. What makes Singapore a very successful country is the discipline of the people. Just imagine Filipinos having the same discipline as people in Singapore, how successful Philippines could be. This led the author in coming up with the idea of using the same way as Singapore does, giving appropriate amount of fear to people so they will follow the law. Thus, Fear Theory is created.

Fear theory is somehow the opposite of fun theory. This is something that will create changes to people's behaviour for the better through "fear."

1.     MMDA/Police Officer Real-Life Replicas
    • Let us admit, most of the people especially motorists are conscious on following the law if there are law enforcers around. This fear theory would make people believe that there are law enforcers present where in fact it is just a replica of them.
    • For example, in Commonwealth Avenue, 60kph is strictly imposed and motorists follow the law knowing that there are monitoring devices used to check the speed of vehicles passing this road. This only proves that people follow the law if someone is monitoring them.
    • The idea is to put as many as possible replicas along with real MMDA/Police Officers, so people would not know who is real and who is not. As a result, people would rather follow the law so as not to commit any violations.
    • Police officer replicas will be placed to crime prone areas to create fear to lawless criminals and to prevent them from making their evil plan.
    • Of course, the places where the replica will be placed must be a secret between the officers only. 4
2.     CCTV Camera Replica
    • CCTV cameras nowadays are quite visible to those establishments who can afford the system.
    • CCTV camera system is quite expensive and not everyone can afford this kind of system. Thus, the author proposes the idea of putting up fake CCTV cameras. These cameras would look like real CCTV cameras so it would be hard to identify it with the real one. 4 Deception
Whether it is Fun Theory or Fear Theory, both work to change people's behaviour for the better. Fun Theory is proven effective based on studies. Fear Theory, as the author's proprietary idea, still has to be proven. The author prays that Fear Theory will emanate to fruition just the same as with Fun Theory.

NU6 What Pisses Me Off at AGSB

What pisses me off at AGSB?

Piss is a very strong word, I should say the following are some rooms of improvement which AGSB can consider in order to give better service to its customers – the students and the faculty as well.

·         Enrollment  -  AGSB only accepts one kind of BPI credit card. I think it is about time that AGSB allows other credit cards so that payment can be done online by most students. All online transactions that I know of already accept any visa or mastercard.

There were times when I had to go to campus just to pay for my tuition fee.  One time I did not bring cash with me. It was already late in the afternoon because I came from the office. Knowing that there is a BPI ATM near the cafeteria (only ATM in the building) I used it but unfortunately, it did not accept my ATM card so I have to go to the next building to withdraw.  I had to walk fast and run in order to return before the cashier closes which I luckily did.

·         Putting on school ID at all times– There was a time when I forgot to bring my ID with me since I was just going to enroll. When I was on the campus entrance, I was told that I have to pay P200 to the cashier.  I asked the guard to accept my other ID since I only need 30 minutes to enroll.  But he still insisted.

So I went to the other entrance, leave my other official ID and told the guard that I need to go to the registrar. So he let me in. <tsk tsk.  We live in stone age?  Even profs are asked to show id>

If safety issues is the reason why students has to use their IDs at all times, why then that a lot of students are not wearing their IDs in class? One classmate of mine told me that she borrowed the ID lace of her friend with AGSB label and then she was able to enter the campus without her ID.

A better way to make sure that students entering the premises are real students is to use a computerized system where students can just tap in their fingerprints which the system can verify, before entering the school premises.

·         Cafeteria – The canteen has limited choices and most of the times they are not visually appetizing. In most cases I just have to buy junk foods just to fill my stomach. Yes there are other kiosks like Wendy's and the fruit shake but their food choices are very few as well and are not satisfying one's taste. These stores should at least improve their menus where food choices can be varied. Or better yet the AGSB can invite other food vendors so that there will be more competition and the existing stores can improve their food menus. I love siomai so a siomai booth would be a good idea.

·         Teaching Aids – Since we are paying good amount of money for our tuition, and fees are increasing every year, maybe AGSB can also upgrade their teaching equipment. Instead of the old computer – LCD projector screen type, the school can use smart boards so that students can just listen and not bother copying notes since teachers' notes can already be saved in the computer. And there is no need for the whiteboard pen with its chemically unpleasant smell.

·         Upgrading Teachers – I observed that most teachers in AGSB have MBA degrees but were not able to pursue their PhD. Maybe AGSB can also give incentives to their faculty members who are taking their Doctoral degree such as scholarship grants so that the professors will have the motivation to study further. Or the school can give continuing education or seminars that can upgrade the knowledge of their professors in a certain subject matter.<there are doctorate scholarship but it is good for 50 and below so most of us will not qualify.  Dont worry, they are retiring old dogs who are 60+>

Although it is good that AGSB also upgrades their books to the latest edition, it is noticeable that some teachers would use their old teaching materials in class. I have observed few professors that use old exams where test papers are almost decomposing. It would be better if professors can also give the latest examples and trends in class. < I do not want to use their old syllabus>

·         Corporate Social Responsibility – I commend AGSB for their Mulat Diwa Program where they conduct feeding programs for elementary school children. As a learning institution, AGSB can also teach values formation to these children where schools are not able to do. Or they can teach simple entrepreneurship to these children. These children will least likely have an opportunity to go to good schools since they cannot afford to.

As a side comment, it is about time that our country would also focus on building entrepreneurship even in children. It would be nice if Entrepreneurship subject would be incorporated in the curriculum as early as grade school (basic), high school (intermediate) and in college (advance).  We need to build entrepreneurs. This is the best way that our country can move forward to become economically stable.

·         Entrepreneurship as part of the Curriculum - Yes there is a separate course for Entrepreneurship in AGSB but it is very expensive which only a few can afford. The MBA students are taught to become executives but not to become entrepreneurs.  Of all the subjects that I have enrolled into in this MBA class, this entrepreneurship subject is the one that I value the most because it drives me to think and become innovative. It inspires me to become an entrepreneur. Before the start of the class I thought this would be time consuming and a heavy subject because it has a lot of requirements but I am enjoying it now. I don't see the assignments as a burden but an opportunity to learn. And finishing an article of this NU6 gives me joy because this is the only venue where I am forced to share what's running on my mind that I myself did not pay attention to in the past. I used to always keep my thoughts to myself and afraid to take a risk but now I am excited to execute the business that I have always dreamed about.

Maybe it is about time that the AGSB management would think of including the Entrepreneurship subject to the curriculum instead of just having it as an elective so that it will force students to learn from it. Who knows this simple subject will drive even just 10 or 20 percent of the class to become entrepreneurs themselves. I see that most if not all the students have the resources, the knowledge and skills, they just don't know how to use it or they just don't have the drive to become entrepreneurs.

These are rooms for improvement that would make the facility and services better and at par with the increasing students' expectation of excellence.  Still, overall I am very thankful for the good education that I have from AGSB.  I acknowledge the wisdom and know-how that I gained from the institution which I believe would make me become a better leader and hopefully a successful entrepreneur in the near future.

More Vending Machines, Please!
By R080230

Tokyo has it by the thousands, why not Manila? Vending machines have truly changed the concept of “open, 24 hours” as now, more and more things are being served by this “robotic consumer wonder”. In Tokyo, you can find almost anything inside this robotic box – from fresh fruits, tea, coffee, canned drinks and yes, even t-shirts and boxer shorts. Maybe it’s the Japanese’s fascination with robots that makes them love these machines. Maybe it’s their penchant for anything technological that make them want these machines. Maybe, Filipinos have yet to discover the benefits of vending machines. Here are some of its benefits:

a.)    24 hour service – vending machines operate 24 hours a day and only stops if you do not refill them. Apart from that, business goes on.
b.)    No manpower needed to complete sales – fewer expenses in the long run since there’s no personal selling required.
c.)     All cash, no credits – no problems with bad accounts receivables.
d.)    Convenience to the customers since these machines are often located in places where there is high foot traffic, which means that customers will walk fewer steps to get to your business.
e.)    Faster and on time customer service versus possible long queues in the retail outlet.
One of the products I am thinking of is a vending machine that serves instant noodles called VENDORAMEN. This is not an entirely new concept as this is already existent in Tokyo and perhaps, some other parts in the world. However, for an instant noodle loving country like that of our country, developing VENDORAMEN has its benefits. For one, this will change how the number one instant noodle company in the country, Nissin Monde, sells its products. The company will no longer rely on retail outlets to sell to the end consumers; they will open a new front on how to reach their customers directly. Second, VENDORAMEN will redefine the concept of instant noodles since now, when you buy your noodle, you get to eat it at once – no need to look or boil for hot water. Third, it offers noodle companies the opportunity to test market new flavours without having to pay additional shelf space in retail outlets – which by the way, could amount to millions of pesos if we are talking about  a nationwide test run. Fourth, instant noodle companies who will employ these machines will skip competition in the retail outlets and they can lock in customers to choose from any of their flavours instead.

For the consumers, VENDORAMEN will redefine the whole notion of convenience of eating instant noodles.  Those looking to eat a hot meal will, for the first time in the country, have the opportunity to enjoy this with all the convenience offered by the vending machines. Working in overtime and want to eat real hot food? No longer will you have to walk to the nearest 7-11 or Ministop, you can have one right at your pantry courtesy of VENDORAMEN. Furthermore, instant noodles will no longer be the “instant noodle” it was once thought of. With VENDORAMEN, one can have his/her noodles in less than a minute or two without the hassle of opening packs, mixing mixes and looking for hot water. What’s more, food consistency will be assured.

With all these good things, why again do we not have a VENDORAMEN concept yet in the country?

MOTORCYCLE
ACCIDENTS, INJURIES, FATALITIES, & CRIMINAL ACTS:
PREVENTION IS A MUST!
By: R090205 (CTG)

Motorcycles, nowadays, are very visible on the roads. There are so many people using motorcycle as mode of their transportation. Usage of motorcycles is very rampant due to practical and minimal investment and less consumption of gasoline compared to cars. People tend to buy their own motorcycle because it is much cheaper, faster, and convenient than commuting.

Before, jeepneys were called "hari ng kalsada," which then was replaced by the proliferation of FX taxis in the late '90s and now, the swarming of motorcycles on the road is very obvious, thus, for me, making it the new "hari ng kalsada," figuratively and literally. Figuratively because motorcycle riders tend to swerve and change lanes anytime and anywhere they want as if they own the road, and literally because usage of motorcycles is undeniably increasing.

The increasing number of motorcycle entails also the increasing number of road accidents involving motorcycles. Most of these accidents cause fatalities to those motorcycle riders due to various factors. First, motorcycle riders tend to over speed like they are flying. Second, motorcycles are very susceptible to accidents because a little amount of bump from other cars or even other motorcycle can cause the riders to easily be thrown out and can cause serious damages, and lastly, most riders tend to ignore the prevailing Republic Act No. 10054, also known as the "Motorcycle Helmet Act" by not wearing any helmet at all or using substandard helmets.

Many have come up with ways to address the abovementioned causes of motorcycle accidents such as the existing 60kph speed limit and motorcycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue, which is known to be called "The Killer Highway" because of ts rampant road accidents happening almost everyday. At first, many have criticized the 60kph speed limit as they believe that this is too slow for a very wide (more than six lanes) highway. In the long run, however, it was proven that this speed limit lessen the road accidents. Same as well as the implementation of the motorcycle lane, initially, many have raised their concerns as they believe that this will cause even more problems for motorcycle riders. The author, however, believes that this will limit and discipline the riders to confine them on certain lane, thus will avoid them on swerving from different lanes.

In line with this, the author proposes the following ideas to augment the existing policies:
1.     Motorcycle Helmet Mandatory Registration
·        Upon the registration of motorcycle every year, all are required to register helmets that will be used. This entails registration of helmets just the same as the registration of the motorcycles. This will improve the mandatory usage of helmet while riding their motorcycles. The riders must treat their helmets just the same treatment with their driver's license. Driver's license is non-transferable and cannot be imitated. The same should be applied for helmets. Riders should take good care of their helmets that they cannot let others to use it just the same with their driver's licenses.
·        LTO will require all manufacturers of helmets being sold in the Philippines to provide certain space on the helmet for security tags that will be imprinted upon registration of helmets.
·        LTO Helmet Registration Security Tags will be uniquely imprinted that only LTO can do the processing and will be impossible to imitate.
·        Traffic Officers will use Helmet Security Scanner to identify the helmet. In this way, Traffic Officers or even Police Officers will be able to suppress criminals who intentionally use for their modus operandi.
·        There was a proposal from MMDA to imprint the motorcycle plate number on the helmet to prevent the wrong usage of helmets by many lawless criminals in hiding their identities while doing their unlawful acts; however, this policy was never implemented due to the concerns raised by different motorcycle associations. They believe that this will complicate matters as people may use other helmets which they do not own. The author believes that the said proposal of the MMDA can now be incorporated with the preceding proposals because of more secure process of registration of helmets that would be impossible for anyone to use unregistered helmets.
2.     Motorcycle Helmet and Suit With Airbag
·        Just like any other cars with airbag features but this time, the author proposes the idea of helmet and suit will have airbag features that will be automatically inflated the moment the sensors sense an appropriate amount of bump on selected parts of the motorcycle.
·        LTO will require this airbag feature as a mandatory compliance for all manufacturers of helmet.
Hopefully the abovementioned proposals will someday be implemented to minimize if not totally avoid crimes using motorcycles and prevent unwarranted  motorcycle accidents which cause major injuries and worse, fatalities. 4.0   Agree Agree. Tama tama!!!!
