Proposals and Improvements

Upon browsing the Facebook, the author came across with a video that inspired him to come up with more creative ideas. The video, about piano stairs, is one of the ideas of Thefuntheory.com. It shows how the piano stairs changed the behaviour of the people to use the stairs instead of the escalator. Because of the fun way using the piano stairs, more people tend to use the piano stairs than the escalator. The piano stairs help the people to have simple exercise through walking while having fun.

Fun theory is an initiative of Volkswagen in which they believe "that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better."  This made the author think of more ideas and propose improvements to some existing theories.

1.     Red Carpet Photo Shoot Stairs

• The purpose of this idea is the same with piano stairs, but instead of using piano keys with sound on the stairway, the stairs will be covered with red carpet so people can feel the prestige and glamour walking on the red carpet, just like during Red Carpet Premier of a blockbuster movie.
• Just like celebrities or royalties, people can pose for a picture at the end of the stairs that will be shown on a monitor placed directly in front of the stairs.
• Sound of applause or drum roll maybe added for more fun.
•  This may be installed inside the malls so people may opt to use the stairs instead of escalators or elevators. In this way, people will feel better not only because of the feeling of glamour and prestige, but also they did a simple exercise through walking without them even noticing it.  4 Wow

2.     Sporty Garbage Bin

• One fun way to motivate people to throw their trashes properly on garbage bins is through this sporty garbage bin.
• Filipinos love basketball. The idea is to incorporate playing basketball in throwing trashes on the garbage bin.
• The garbage bin will be designed like a basketball game in an arcade.
• When someone threw trash on the garbage bin, the bin will respond with a sound effect like "three point shot!", "nice shot!", "ring less," etc.   
• Every throw or "shot" will have corresponding scores, so people will be encouraged throwing more on the garbage bin.
• This sporty garbage bin will not be limited to basketball, hence, this can be modified and relate to other sports like football, soccer, baseball, etc. 4

The author admits that the fun theory might only be effective at certain extent. This gives more room to think of other ideas that might be well suited for Filipinos. What makes Singapore a very successful country is the discipline of the people. Just imagine Filipinos having the same discipline as people in Singapore, how successful Philippines could be. This led the author in coming up with the idea of using the same way as Singapore does, giving appropriate amount of fear to people so they will follow the law. Thus, Fear Theory is created.

Fear theory is somehow the opposite of fun theory. This is something that will create changes to people's behaviour for the better through "fear."

1.     MMDA/Police Officer Real-Life Replicas

• Let us admit, most of the people especially motorists are conscious on following the law if there are law enforcers around. This fear theory would make people believe that there are law enforcers present where in fact it is just a replica of them.
• For example, in Commonwealth Avenue, 60kph is strictly imposed and motorists follow the law knowing that there are monitoring devices used to check the speed of vehicles passing this road. This only proves that people follow the law if someone is monitoring them.
• The idea is to put as many as possible replicas along with real MMDA/Police Officers, so people would not know who is real and who is not. As a result, people would rather follow the law so as not to commit any violations.
• Police officer replicas will be placed to crime prone areas to create fear to lawless criminals and to prevent them from making their evil plan.
• Of course, the places where the replica will be placed must be a secret between the officers only. 4

2.     CCTV Camera Replica

• CCTV cameras nowadays are quite visible to those establishments who can afford the system.
• CCTV camera system is quite expensive and not everyone can afford this kind of system. Thus, the author proposes the idea of putting up fake CCTV cameras. These cameras would look like real CCTV cameras so it would be hard to identify it with the real one. 4 Deception

Whether it is Fun Theory or Fear Theory, both work to change people's behaviour for the better. Fun Theory is proven effective based on studies. Fear Theory, as the author's proprietary idea, still has to be proven. The author prays that Fear Theory will emanate to fruition just the same as with Fun Theory.
