Soup Anyone?
By: JC
A few years ago, Coca Cola had a chance to bring to bottled tea beverages in the Philippines. However, their Philippine management turned down the idea because they thought that Philippines is a soda drinking country and the subtle taste of teas will never satisfy Filipino's palate which prefers strong sweet or salty taste.
A little more that a year after the company scrapped the idea, Universal Robina launched the first ever bottled tea beverage in the market -- C2. Thanks to their aggressive marketing, they were able to create a niche in our market by influencing Filipinos to convert from high calorie, unhealthy sodas to as-refreshing -yet-healthy bottled tea beverages. From then on, many beverage companies also launched their own bottled tea drinks such as Nestea, Lipton, Sunkist and Real Leaf.
Recently, another eastern craze invaded the market. Flavored milk teas. Milk Tea stores/kiosks have been sprouting at the malls and posed a threat to coffee shops. When I try to think of it, all these fad of adopting healthier beverages like teas stems from Filipino's greater awareness of health, specifically eating and drinking healthy. This now leads me to think of other food that has a potential to be embraced by Philippines market because of their health benefits.
Soups. We know that soups/ramen are popular in countries like China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. In our country however, we only eat soup to complement our rice meal. But soup can be a very healthy meal where you can have all your protein, carbohydrates and vegetables requirements in one go. So the concept is to create a store focused on selling soups. What will make this store different is that each soup will be carefully studied by dietitians and the benefits will be presented to the customers as shown below. 3.5
