NU 12 11th Paper

11th NU12 Paper – What pisses me off at AGSB:

LUNCH VENDO

Submitted to: Prof. Jorge Saguinsin

During my medical school days, I was always in a hurry to do things done because of the tremendous volume of reading and studying that had to be accomplished in a certain amount of time. We often had 3-5 exams in a day, and that means every “free” time is used for reviewing, even lunch breaks. So I was used to having lunch and snacks on the go, bringing food to the classroom and studying while having meals.

After more than 15 years, once again I find myself in the classroom, now in AGSB. And sometimes, because of the amount of assignments and readings that had to be done, there is really no time to spend for a regular lunch in the canteen. The long queue line in the single counter that serves rice and lunch alone will eat up most of the break time. So wouldn’t it be really convenient if there were a number of lunch dispensing vendo machines in the campus?

An ideal machine would have sandwich packs, and rice toppings packs etc. and drinks also. One uber hungry student can just go to the nearest machine, get the meal and return to the room in less than 5-10minutes. It is also expected to decongest the long lines in the canteen.

Multi-Level Parking

Multi-Level Parking

Government establishments are usually crowded and usually parking is a problem. Parking in hospitals is also a problem. So imagine how much of a problem in parking you have in a government hospital?

Everyday is like a search for the holy grail as I try to find a much coveted empty parking slot in the hospital I work in. For a hospital with almost 550 inpatients, 600 daily out-patients, 1000 employees, and 200 doctors, a 50-car parking area (which is FREE PARKING) simply wouldn’t be enough.

Since the hospital lacks the required lot-area for a full blown multi-level parking, the most probable solution to this problem is the compact-steel automated multi-level parking system. Of course, this has to be PAY PARKING to retrieve the capital outlay.

The available parking space at the back of the hospital is around the size of a full basketball court. This can usually accommodate 12 cars. If we can have a 6-level parking system in this area, we will already have 72 parking slots, already more than the existing area.

NU 7: Serendipity walk - Jennifer Liquete

Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship "New ideas create more and better new products and services; create more wealth."

Location: Tandang Sora (McDo side)

The busy street of Tandang Sora is always filled with commuters (employees and students from nearby schools), jeepney drivers, tricycle drivers and residents from neighboring shanties. Everyday, the commuters and the drivers are tired after their long day at work and school. In addition to their stress, commuters always have to wait for their turn to get a ride while drivers are eager to finish their shift so that they can rest and relax. Residents from neighboring shanties, on the other hand, are either looking for some means to earn money (ex. catch a cab or guide a car from getting out of the parking) or searching for something to interest them.

Since most of the population, if not all, have low disposable income, small businesses with low cost and sells at a low price are the most feasible option.

Business opportunities at Tandang Sora:

-                      Beat the heat with ice scramble, iced candy, popsicles and halo-halo!
What would be a better and cheaper way to cool themselves during a hot day in Manila? For the consumers, these are within their budget and after a long day, it is a cheap treat for them to refresh and relax. For the business, these cool treats are easy to make and have minimal costs. The only alternative for these are McDo's and Jollibee’s sundaes which will cost them twice or thrice more than the ice scramble, iced candy, popsicles, and halo-halo.
-                      Pinoy Cravings: P5 per stick of fishballs, squidballs, isaw, kikiam, kwek-kwek; P10 per stick of hotdog; P10 per cup of gulaman or buko juice
Fishballs, squidballs, isaw, kwek-kwek and hotdogs are among the top Filipino cravings. This type of turo-turo is very irresistible for Filipinos, especially those who are hungry after a tiring day. It is a cheap way to satisfy the hunger and craving of the commuters, drivers and residents from the shanties. Gulaman and buko juice, on the other hand, are Filipino favorites and these are cheap drinks to quench their thirst or if just to freshen them up. These products have a certain characteristic that once you see their carts, you are tempted to buy even just one.
Lastly, aside from being cheaper than the other food establishments (McDo, Jollibee and 7-11), these products are more convenient for the commuters and drivers. Waiting period is only a minute compared to the 5-7 minutes ordering and receiving process in the other food establishments. Convenience is a key factor because this market is always on-the-go. They do not have time to spare because they need to get in line for their ride (for commuters) and to leave when the ride is full (for drivers).
-                      Recreational Activities: Computer shop/gaming station and videoke
There has always been a high demand for computer shops and gaming stations from students. It is their way of escaping reality and having fun. I noticed that in all gaming stations and computer shops, the level of disposable income is not a limitation. Students always have an allocated budget for gaming and this is not yet tapped in Tandang Sora. To operate at a low cost, second-hand computers can be used. Videoke, on the other hand, is one of the most common past-time of adults with low disposable income. A small location with one TV and microphone is already sufficient. Customers will also have an option to dine and drink while in the place. It will have a low price per song and cheap food and drinks that will entice the market to enter the shop.
-                      Small Clinics: x-ray, pediatrics, obstetrics, dental, EENT, minor surgery (ex. Removal of cysts, circumcision, wounds)
Health will always be a concern for everyone, even those without budget. For those in the lower income bracket, it is important that they find an economical clinic because they will not be able to afford the usual high rates. Currently, there aren’t any low-budget clinics in the area even though there is a high traffic of lower C, D and E. This creates a business opportunity for small clinics that will provide common and vital services such as x-ray, pediatrics, obstetrics, dental, EENT and minor surgeries including removal of cysts, circumcisions, and treatment of wounds. To operate at a low cost, the clinic can buy second-hand equipment that are no longer being used by hospitals. For the doctors/consultants/specialists, the business can recruit medical students/interns that are looking for more exposure and experience in the medical field. It will be a mutual benefit because they will gain more experience from these clinics and at the same time, the business will have lower costs because these are not yet high-level specialists or doctors. For safety purposes, one senior can be hired overlook the performance of the medical students/interns. 3

NU12 - Tighter hospital security measures by Rhea Jardin

With the recent news about a newborn baby that was kidnapped from the hospital by a false doctor, I believe that it's about time that hospitals adopt a new security measure or facility for the benefit of both the patient and the institution itself.
Each hospital should place an identification scanner in each ward and private room where only nurses, doctors and authorized hospital staff are given access to these rooms by the use of the barcode in their respective ID cards. Each patient however will also be given one access card for their companion's use but will be recalled and deactivated once the patient is discharged from the hospital. All usage of access card by patients and hospital personnel will be recorded in the hospital's computer system in order to track down the activity of each person which will be very useful in cases where investigations are to be conducted, like for instance the recent baby-napping from a local hospital.
Furthermore, the hospital should innovate their patient tag by changing it to a metal bracelet type with a homing detector device. The hospital would then place a scanner in all of its entrance and exit doors. This patient tag will alarm if the patient passes through all these doors in cases where the patient is not yet authorized by the hospital to leave the premises. This way abduction or kidnapping of babies would be prevented as well as patients who would sneak out of the hospital without settling their obligations first.4

NU12 IDEA#4 POTHOLE Mobile Application by Maica Sy

Being able to have GPS in the Philippines as well as the traffic mobile navigators is definitely a big help to motorists nowadays. Innovation takes something extra to make this process automatic and address the problem of those potholes along the main streets and highways in the Metro. The app takes advantage of the sensors on smartphones to report potholes automatically while users are driving the streets. Developed in partnership with a local professor, the Android app uses the accelerometers and GPS technology in users' phones to register when and where the user's car has experienced a pothole — allowing local authorities to map issues and take action more effectively.

NU IDEA #8 by AJG - Bachelor's Pad in a warehouse

NU IDEA #8  A Warehouse house (a Bachelor's Ideal placed)

I was thinking of investments one day and thought of building a house of my own, but since I don't have anyone to settle with yet it seemed that it would be impractical for me. But then it hit me, I'd still go for getting a place of my own but it would be a warehouse type of house.

I hope everyone can get how I'm describing this one, a big space with no dividers, and only a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the whole interior, A warehouse. Imagine an enclose space with no deviders, the sala in one corner, kitchen and dining on the other. It can be described as a very nice Bachelor's Pad. But what makes it very practical is that in time that I don't intend to live in the place anymore since it may not be a good idea to bring a family in the place, you can easily convert it to an office space or as it is, a warehouse that is a good requirement for business. 4

NU IDEA #7  Family Corporation: What should've been done before everything else.

I grew up with my family managing a then 20 year old institution that was passed on by my grandfather to my parents. It was easy for my grandfather who to choose in managing the institution since it was only my dad that stayed in this country and all our relatives had already migrated abroad. And now, since my brother focused on taking the corporate lifestyle, it was easy for my dad to designate me to manage the institution next. During this months that had turned into years that operations of the institution is being passed on to me, I can't help but read books and some articles regarding family owned corporations. Their pros and cons and how it should be handled. From my own experience, and for some articles that I have read I can conclude some things that are important in starting a family corporation, especially when the plan is to make it really big.

1.)    Code of Ethics
a.       This is very important in any organization, but I need to stress out on this one. Since growing as family means everyone is comfortable with each other, but doing business should be treated very differently. A mere tardiness and absence should be taken seriously and should be addressed right away.
2.)    A rule on who to pass on the management
a.       May it be the traditional way like the Chinese people where the first born son will take over the company or to any culture that gives it to the youngest, the point here is, it should be stated, it should be made known to everyone. Ideally for me, it should be given to the person who is most qualified, otherwise, running a business to ruins doesn't benefit anyone in the family in the long run.
3.)    The Patriarch/ Matriarch
a.       There should always be that one person that would decide on the next move of the company, and everyone else should support his or her decision even if they disagree. Because at the end of the day, it is everyone's business.

These are only some of the things in my mind, there could be more but that would entail writing a whole book. 3

NU12 (5) -Calling All Artists Who Will Decorate The Jollijeeps In Makati by HA

NU12 (5) -Calling All Artists Who Will Decorate The Jollijeeps In Makati

Makati is like the center of business in the Philippines. We all see the tall buildings of corporations, hospitals, embassies, condominiums, and other establishments. Several employees, eat in their respective canteens, go out in restaurants or buy food in Jollijeep that are posted along the side of the road. As we can see, jollijeeps are either small plain-looking or covered by a tarpaulin stainless steel mobile canteen.
Jollijeeps are unique feature of our country and we can use this to at least give us a better image by making it look good. A lot of foreigners are visiting Makati for business and other purposes. In line with this, I would like to suggest a contest for all artists who are interested and have the heart to put their creativity in doing a mosaic in our very own Jollijeeps. If jeepneys are known for being vibrant, jollijeeps can also be similar to that image. It would be of a mosaic type of art. The theme would be anything that would promote tourism in the Philippines. I choose mosaic because an artist will have more room for creativity and they'll be using more colors. This will brighten and give life to the dull looking jollijeeps. It would help attract more customers because it would give an appealing look for the mobile canteens that will also be of help to boost their sales.  The artists will be using water-resistant paints so that the work of art will stay for a long period of time. In the long run, painting the Jollijeep can also protect it from tarnishing. The top 3 most beautifully painted and captured the theme of the contest will be rewarded and will have the chance to exhibit his works in the mall. The winner will be screened and scored by selected judges (50%) and will be voted by the citizens of Makati.
Many Filipino artists will be known and will be appreciated. Jollijeeps will also be another representation of the uniqueness of our country. 3.5
