Unlearn you MBA - Videoshare from Ecorner of Stanford Universtiy

"Innovate or DIE"

David Hansson does not believe much in planning. He thinks that planning is guessing. The more important thing is to be focused today. (Peter Drucker says that being focused on tomorrow forces you to innovate to discard yesterday's losers. Like Steve Jobs, he wants to make a " dent in the universe."

Thank you David Hansson, Ecorner, Stanford U, and Kauffman Foundation. You are great guys in the world of entrepeneuralism.

Evolution of Technology from Slideshare

"Innovate or DIE"

There are three clusters of innovation which led to the spurt of technological changes in the modern era: the gasoline engine which led to increase in range, electronic parts which made connectin easier, and interchangeable parts (like lego) that enabled efficient, and mass production.

This is an enjoyable and enlightening presentation by Lanting.

Cheap Home Remedies for Cancer Detection and Cure

"Innovate or DIE"

Newsfeed this morning from newsreel and blogrolls said there are several common home remedies for cancer:

l. Coffee - when rubbed on the skin can reduce the incidence of skin cancer. While cure is not l00%, the fighting chance of those with melanoma can increase with the use of this commonly available food.

2. Dog sniff can detect with 90% possibility/presence of lung cancer. This is better than 40% detection rate using sophisticated medical technology. This was determined by German MDs and featured in the sidebar today at the widget Web MD Health News.

Do you believe this? Would coffee and pet dog prices go up? Would this affect bio medical technology?

What new idea would they think of next?

We Should be Grateful that the CCP Investigation Ended

"Innovate or DIE"

We would like to thank the good Senator Angara for terminating at the Senate the inquiry on Cultural Center of the Philippines officials regarding "blasphemous art exhibits". We all know that the good senators were under pressure to please the offended parties.

The act was merciful because the public was further spared from witnessing the lack of maturity and art appreciation from amongst the high levels of government, and further exposing Filipinos to ridicule and humiliation to the world.

Thank you for your sagacity and maturity, Senator.

The trending has ended? (who got the pogi pts?)

Now CCP, artists beware. Keep your best work at home.

Keep your art free from inquisition even if it is 2lst century.  They still wear the same sotana (Joke po)

Joining the Trending Scene - Investigation of UST Artitsts Exhibit by Phil. Senate

"Innovate or DIE"

We are now trending animals in this country. Christopher Lao is no longer a trend - he is now "LAOS" (OLD AND STALE). The UST artist with blasphemous exhibit at the Cultural Center of the Phil is now at the center of trending and the press, public, social media are having a feeding frenzy.

I see no big reason why an august body like Phil. legislature would devote its precious time and conduct an art appreciation class for the nation to see, except to gain social media mileage. In the meantime, other more important matters like competitiveness, efficient governance, economy are begging for its attention. Goal setting, setting priorities would have been a better topic, or innovation.

But I join this trending fray because innovation and creation by artists are first cousins (or the same dog with different collar). I do not know whether this event gives the correct signal for people who create and design, no matter how weird and contrarian they may be. They are the spark of genius which we badly need in this nation that is being left behind more and more.

The fray could have been settled by simple firing of people whom they feel did wrong in a disciplinary board hearing, or dealt with severely by a censorship body. There are such body to do these things. But for Phil. legislature to do this...

What do you think of this controversy?

Does this action of Phil. Senate send correct signal to creative people?

Bill Gross on Devotion to New Ideas from Ecorner for Stanford University

"Innovate or DIE"

Here's a checklist I made of the lessons Bill Gross offers in this podcast.

Startup Checklist
adapted from 02/2011 Bill Gross talk at Stanford by hvw 08/2011

1. Create products that you care about, would want yourself, and that you’re passionate about.
You have to be in love with what you're doing, because every start-up is going to face deep dark days, and if you and your team aren’t in love with it, you'll give up.

- Started JumpStart software business after watching "Multimedia Beethoven" CD-ROM that he found beautiful, and a desire to create educational software for his son

2. Found your business with a team that includes all four talents: Entrepreneurs, Producers, Administrators and Integrators.
This team working together can take a bad idea and turn it into a brilliant idea. A brilliant idea with a bad team will fizzle.

- Entrepreneur: sees things in the distance, ahead of their time, inventor
- Producer: gets things done, executes, sells the products, all the execution steps to get it in customer hands. some people are actually negative on this - detract from producing.
- Administrator: the bureaucrat. keep the wheels on the bus when orders are flowing in - create systems for the business to run itself
- Integrator: people person. helps other three talents get along - b/c often the other three talents hate each other's guts.

3. Get out there and try stuff.
You never know what you’ll learn if you put yourself out there.

Bill learned this lesson while working on his JumpStart Educational Software. They started a program called "Weekend Warriors" - every employee went to CompUSA on Saturday and Sunday mornings and would set up at end of aisle to demo shoppers.

3. Listen to your customers. Build your business around customer needs, interests and feedback.
You'll find new directions to take your business if you engage customers and keep your ears open.

While doing Weekend Warriors, Bill learned that customers were confused about which product to buy for their particular child. Everyone would make their products super-broad, like theirs said "fun for everybody ages 8 to 108." So they came up with the idea for products that were one-year age range, like "JumpStart Kindergarten". Big risk but sales exploded 20x increase and they sold 20 million copies.

4. Ignore "the experts."
Bill created pay-per-click in 1998. Wall Street Journal and Yahoo both said it was the worst idea ever. Yahoo bought their company 5 years later.

5. Try the business idea in a small, cheap way first.
Bill created CarsDirect.com - their idea was that Bill wanted to be able to buy a car over the internet and have it delivered in a flatbed truck to avoid the hassle and lies from car salesmen. They put up the CarsDirect.com site without any car deals to see if anyone would buy through it. And sure enough, 4 people ordered cars that week. They quickly shut down the site, and drove down to a dealership and bought the cars and delivered them themselves. Then they built a business - forged relationships with manufacturers, etc.

6. Persistence.
The hallmark of success is perseverance. It's sticking through it when you hit the inevitable hard times.

Sometimes the 'first mover' wins, but usually the better executor with the greater persistence wins.

7. It's very hard or nearly impossible to know analytically whether the business will succeed or fail in advance.
There's no tangible step to know when to stop. It's a matter of judgment. Outside advisers can help.

8. Have regular brainstorming sessions. Bring in outside people to help.

9. Equity is a powerful way to motivate people

Innovation from Pinoys presented at Jessica Soho TV show at GMA 7

"Innovate or DIE"

Last night, Aug l3, 20ll, I watched the Jessica Soho Kapuso Mo GMA 7 program. She presented several creative ideas at the show; I only saw and remembered 3:

l. Coffin furniture by Jun Tupaz in Cebu. He fashioned all house furniture from coffin: closet, sofas, beds ceiling lights. They are unique. In the beginning, people feared the furniture. Now they are liked and they draw in more customers and business.

2. Unique sculpture from wood gathered from Ondoy flood. There are sculptures made from the wood flotsam from the Ondoy flood. One that I like is the THINK BIG CHAIR - a very large chair. The creator studies in the US.

3. Unique, weird crazy acrylic figurines that are out of this world. They are products of wild imagination of the creator. They sell well although his parents object to this.

I saw another creativity at the next program - INVESTIGADOR by Mike Enriquez. I see another kind of inventiveness - that of not following hygienic and safe processes in cooking and preparing the hopia and/or merely using corn or food coloring let us say for ube hopia.

What do you think of these creations/innovations? Are they useful to society and economy?

More on EV Racing

"Innovation is creating value from existing resources." Innovation is the tool of entrepreneurship.

Jump to Comments The KillaCycle New Zealand Tour was a huge success! We not only demonstrated that electrics can be fast and sexy, the tour also brought together EV people from all over NZ. An “EV movement” seems to already have started in NZ in the surge of the tour.
Meremere Burnout
Picture: Meremere dragway in Auckland. Most of the day rained away. Even when the rain stopped, the track was too wet to run safely at full power.
Every show and dinner on the tour turned in to a mini-convention where people met that otherwise wouldn’t have met. With ten events during three weeks, that means a lot of people. We really helped to draw together a “critical mass” of NZ EVers.
One of the purposes of the tour was to promote and help the development of the Tumanako open-source motor-controller project. The Tumanako group, based in New Zealand, has built and is just on the edge of production distribution of an open-source 200 kW inverter and drive package. It is awesome and it is about time someone did this. This has potential to be the “Linux” for electric vehicles.
Motor-controllers are a big issue for _all_ racers and for small manufacturers. The motor-controllers you can buy are a “black box” and you have no access to change or modify the software for your needs, because the manufacturer will never give you the source code. Imagine buying a race engine where you can’t change the pistons or even set the ignition timing..? That is the case for electrics today. Information about the Tumanako group here. I will write more about them soon. We hope to use one of their motor-controllers in the motorcycle streamliner that Eva is building right now (more about that too soon). Eva and I are strongly supporting the open-source project and hope that more people will join the group to reach the critical mass where things start to really happen.

Electric Motorcyle Racing

"Innovation is creating value from existing resources." Innovation is the tool of entrepreneurship.

Electric cars, electric airplanes, and electric motorcyles, electric car racing, and now electric motorcyle racing.  These are great  initiatives to save on fossil fuels, stop global warming, and thus save the planet.

EV Racing

Electric Burn-out
Until they actually saw the first run at Bandimere Speedway, they did not fully believe “Zero to 60 mph in less than one second.” The film crew was not prepared for the acceleration on the launch. After the first run, they said, “It was on the starting line…and then it was just GONE!”
The camera crew attached little mini-cams all over the KillaCycle (and the ElectroCat ). They got fantastic action footage. Since the KillaCycle is an all-out racing machine, we did not concern ourselves with AC magnetic shielding or trying to minimize stray fields like you would do on a street EV. (Like you would not add a muffler to a racing ICE machine.) Thus, there were some very weird distortions in some of the on-board video footage. Kind of like science fiction force-field looking effects. I hope they show these “force field” clips.
You can see more photos in the photo album here.
It was a great pleasure meeting and working with the Nova team.
