Innovations are not Really High Tech and Earth Shaking

The innovations that we know of and that have impacted the society and economy are not really high tech and earth shaking (we always equate this with IT, gnome, biotech aerospace, rocket science!!!?)

l.  The textbook -  Without the textbook, the teachers job of teaching would be extremely difficult.

2.  The university - The university has impacted all aspects of human life whether it be health, business, arts, philosophy, sciences, agriculture.

3.  The electricity distribution system  The inventive genius of T. A Edison was the discovery and invention of the electric incandescent bulb  but the creation of the infrastructure to bring electricity to the homes via poles, power lines, transformers, and the electric generators.  The latter was low tech, and that is where TAE applied his entrepreneurial skills.

4.  The harvester -  The harvester is being attributed to McCormick.  However, the harvester has been in existence before McCormick.  He merely devised a financing scheme how farmers can acquire the harvesters.

5.  Stem cells in lung transplant -  When I heard about this, I thought this was earthshaking breakthrough in medicine.  I learned it is all about reducing or eliminating organ rejection (without heavy dosage of anti rejection drugs) by impregnating the about to be transplanted organ with the patient's organ.  And this made the morning newspapers.

6.  The smart phones.   There are many smart phones that are better than the popular brand.  The technology for manufacture of the smart phones are available to anyone.  Yet the leading brand is leading because of low tech innovations, which include but not limited to marketing hype, and charisma of the company CEO
