New Ideas from Mr. Illac Diaz, Filipino Social Entrepreneur

Mr. Illac Diaz, who is known for his good lucks, career in modelling and acting is making his dent in the universe.  He has introduced a lot of new ideas-innovation in the field of social entrepreneurship:

l.  The Pier One - It is a kind of hostel for seafarers.  He found out that seafarers who look for their next assignments end up as vagrants at Luneta Park, because they do not have affordable places to stay while awaiting their new assignments.  So designed a place near the Pier (hence the name)where the now-jobless-seafarers can stay at a very affordable price.  There is an internet service so that the applicants can follow up their applications.  Those who do not have money can pay in kind (service)

2.  The peanut shelller in Pampanga -  This was designed for settlers in lahar ravaged areas in Pampanga whose main produce are peanuts.  The peanut shellers multiplied the productivity of the shellers, from a kilo to 30x that amount.  Now the shellers, can do other productive things, or buy their own shellers and rent them out.  There is entrepreneurship and more income.

3.  Clay buildings and the Rio Dome -  This is a technology for building houses using soil and clay.  Houses can be built cheaply and are strong, typhoon resistant.  The whole project saves on precious foreign exchange (fx do not have to go out of the locality and the country which is the case for cement, rebars, and GI sheets which are importe)  When there is savings, there is entrepreneurship. When money circulates in the community, from payment of wages in the construction, there is flow of money in the community;  spending increases, and business flourrish  and hence entrepreneurship

4.  Regrowing the corals -  Coral destruction is destructive to the fish and other marine life;  even more so for the fishermen.  Corals are haven for fish where they breed and stay.  Coral reef destruction decimates fish population and reduces catch, income of fishermen.  Illac Diaz and a group of scientists introduced a method to speed up regrowth of corals by low electrical charge from solar panels and mini solar wind generators. The regrowth of coral reefs is accelerated, and population of fish reverts to normal, and there are more fish.  Low  cost solution to alleviate poverty.

5. Cheap lighting system for poor folk -  Lately there are news about a new lighting system for the poor using recylable materials like softdrinks bottle and detergents/solvents.
