New Ideas in Fighting Dengue

"Innovate or DIE"

The incidence of dengue (h or hemorrhagic fever) in the Philippines, both in terms of morbidity and mortality has reached alarming proportion. The only way you can attack dengue is to prevent one from getting it - get away from the carrier - the mosquito. Once it hits you, you wait for 7 days for the virus to get it over with..

Preventive measures:

l. Remove, destroy the breeding places of the carrier mosquitoes. Fogging which is bad for health is out of the question.

2. Prevent contact with the mosquitoes. Have mosquito nets even on daytime; wear long sleeve shirts. Apply mosquito repellant (but not the DEET type). The human nature bug spray is good (they say and is in great demand these days)

One of the things I learned is that they infect the carrier mosquitoes or virus with bacteria. Results are yet to be known.

I know from one of my fmr doctor MBA students is to prevent the male population of mosquitoes from growing. They usually live on vegatation and if their habitat is destroyed, no eggs will be fertilized. He said it was effective in their subdivision.

When you get it.

The sign that you have it is very high fever and being positive for tourniquet test or decreasing platelet count. Before, children alone get it. But now, the dengue might have mutated and affects both young and old.

The most that you can do is: have plenty of rest, take plenty of vitamins, increase your platelet count. One of the things being recommended is to take "tawa-tawa leaves tea". It is aplenty and is said to increase blood platelet count.
