Fab Labs - How to Make Almost Anything

The Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

If I were to be born again and to teach again, I will like to learn this science of FabLabs.

This was started by Neil Gernshenfeld, star physicist of Massachussetts Institute of Technology.   He started this at BAT (Bits and Atoms) in 1998;  100 signed up in a class that would accept only l0 and attracted all sorts of people:   including artists.

The fablabs which originally cost $20t would contain all the tools necessary to create things:   milling machine, 3d printing and program controllers.  The cost is expected to go down.  The fab labs could be useful in 3rd world countries by foundation, factories, mission to provide solutions in the area.

He wrote about this in his book, "Fabs:   Desktop Factories - Coming Revolution from your Desktop"

3d printing

This is an essential part of designing:  from 2d cad, 2d cae, cae, now comes 3d printing.  3d printing creates mock up using plastic or ink.  In the FabLabs, even models of bridges or buildings can be made using 3d printing.

I just an ad of ATI in the newspapers on 3d printing.  Their brand is RapMan and costs only P89,000.  Now designing using sophisticated technology is possible to anyone, not just big factories with huge R & D budget.

They can be contacted at:   RapMan
