According to Lee Kuan Yew, John Gokongwei, and Joey Concepcion travelling makes you sharp, keeps you on edge, and gives you a lot of learning. According to JC, many of their new product ideas at RFM are a a result of his travel abroad.
Yesterday, on my way home from Iloilo business trip, I met several wonderful people:
l. Mr Ernie Catral of Transco. He was with a group of a lawyer and Engr. who visited electric coops in Iloilo. He was also AGSB MBA graduate in l996 while AGSB was at de la Costa (I graduated 3 years later). We discussed the CJ 4l assets that was flashed on TV and said he was not exactly proud now of being an Ateneo graduate.
2. Bro. Paul Celis, a born again Christian, a Project Manager of a British firm in Dubai for interior design,. He was just a high school graduate, but learned the sophisticated world of architecture and interior design, because he said he was close to the Lord, and he had the desire. He wass flying to Manila and will fly to Dubai from Malaysia today.
We had long talk because, both I and Paul came at 3 pm and our flight was at 7:50. However, plane arrived past 8 pm!!
3. Mr. Frank U. Dianko, Business Development Officer of Xen Energy System. (At NAIA 2, I introduced Mr. Frank and Ernie, both being at the energy business)
Prepaid Electricity System by Xen
He was my seatmate at the plane, # ll row, and I inquired about his business, and said he was selling prepaid electricity system. Oh I thought, the SMART and the MERALCO bright boys were ahead of the ball game, as was often said by Meralco managers who were fmr. entrep students. No he said, their company holds the front and back end of the system. Their system use the PLC as the communication line, and the meter. What is PLC?
The prepaid electricity would be applicable to customers in the CDEF SEC who have difficulty in paying, reconnection etc. Electricity could be turned on and off (a safety feature) when away from home from a cellphone.

From the way Frank described it, it goes this way:
l. The subscriber has the meter installed; he/she buys load from from loading center which could be a sarisari store, just like a telco load. The load is transferred to the electric cooperative account, the meter is activated, and the meter flows into the household. When the load is gone, the meter is turned off, the delivery of electricity stops.
2. The big consumer, AB, and industrial and commercial consumers would not be prepaid subscribers, so there will be still meter readers. However, there will be huge savings and less work for accounting, collection and meter reading. There will be less theft, malversation and hold up of collectors, less cash transfers etc.LESSER SYSTEM LOSS TOO. (Which is passed on to consumers and inflates electricity cost)
3. There is another system using RF, but a new infrastructure is needed. Theirs use the GSM and PLC as the data path. The prepaid and use of electric power lines for data transfer go hand in hand and MVP and his boys talk so much about this.
4. His job is to sell the system to cooperatives, by lending them meters for trial by one month. Cognizant of total selling, he and the ESI lawyer will for free, file for the electric coop at ERC to shift to prepaid electricity. However, MERALCO managers are taking a while to accept their system. The CEO of Meralco, Mr. Oscar Reyes, former chief of Shell, is a friend of one of their officer.
5. The prepaid electricity system could apply as well to water system operation.
6. There is all ready a system in use now in South Africa, but is more tedious and expensive and they look forward to licensing their system to them
7. They look forward to marketing this system to other third world countries.
8. This is truly a Pinoy innovation. Proud to be Pinoy. (Just like the Ibus of Rodel de Guzman and Elma Alboleras. I am lucky that I met these guys and their innovations invention. After I read their website, then, I will blog some more.
This would be an interesting article for entrep students to discuss, and I hope this blogpost would help Frank some more.

Batangas Electric Coop was the first to adopt this, followed by Bohol Electric Cooperative. How about Meralco.?
