Hello Prof,
I do not know why my name did not appear in all the NUs I sent before. Sorry for that. I hope this time you will see it. This is Tinkerbell <tinkerbell image appeared in several of them. but I am not sure if I guess>
PORTABLE GARBAGE SORTING MACHINE
Proper waste disposal is one of the thrust of LGUs now because finally people are accepting that improper waste disposal leads to a lot of problems like groundwater contamination, disease outbreaks, habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution. A simple and rational way to cope with all our garbage is to sort them out at its source and to separate it immediately where possible. Hence, we see garbage bins separating recyclable from combustible to incombustible. Others use color-coded bins separating the following: recyclable, non-biodegradable, biodegradable, infectious, and industrial materials or those bulk goods for businesses. The way waste is sorted usually reflects local disposal systems. It is kind of difficult to memorize what trash goes to which bin especially when one is in a hurry to finish all chores. I wish there's a portable garbage machine which can accommodate and separate all the trash and LGUs will require all households this portable waste sorting machine. It will have a wide mouth to accommodate all the garbage. With just a push button, garbage will travel a conveyor belt in the machine which has sensors that will detect which trash goes to which container of the machine. Hence, we save time thinking how to separate all the trash! Garbage will be segregated the way our local authorities want! It would also be nice if the machine has an indicator of how much waste is already inside each bin and a compactor. When we see that a bin is almost full and that the garbage collector is not about to collect yet, we can just push a button to make sure that the garbage can be compressed so we still have space till the collector arrives. Or it would be better if the waste sorting machine has sensors that can detect if the bin is almost full so that it will automatically compress what's inside once a threshold is reached. The compressed and segregated garbage will have more space in the garbage trucks. LGUs can also put these sorting machines on the streets instead of the usual garbage bins we see. That's easier waste disposal and segregation system for the entire community! 4
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT AT AGSB?
AGSB is one of the best schools in the country although I think there's still room for improvement.
Parking. Why not make parking free? Anyways, students patronized the school and paid tuition already. Or, why not incorporate parking fees during enrollment? Better yet, why not incorporate in the ID a sensor that will automatically open the entry barrier? This will enhance security because only those who are connected with AGSB will have access to the parking slots. We will likewise no longer have to look for change every time.
IDs. We know that these are for identification purposes but why penalize students when they forget the ID? Why not use biometrics like finger print scanners as back-up for the ID? The biometrics can also serve as additional security measure.
Online Payments. I know we register online but we have to go to the cashier to make payments. When we do not register online, we are asked to do so before we can pay the tuition. What about accepting major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard and having online payments so we do not have to go to school till it's the first day of class?
Class cards. Why not provide our professors with the details we are filling up in the class cards? We have already given all the data when we enrolled in AGSB, including our picture. This way, we save on paper and time. That will also give the professor an idea of what kind of class he or she is to handle even before the professor meets with the class.
Schedule. Another thing that bothers me is the schedule for the term. Can AGSB provide at least the schedule for the present term and the next ahead of time preferably at the same time they give the schedule of the present term so we can schedule vacation or other activities during the break? Flights and travel packages are cheaper if purchased months in advance J I really do not want to miss any class because I want to learn. Besides, tuition in AGSB is not cheap.
Possible electives with their description and schedules. I think MBAH students will be grateful if all possible electives (with their description, professor, venue, and schedules) are posted online and we can see real time how many are already enrolled in that subject. This will help us to select an elective we really need and want. We will also have an idea if the class we enrolled in will push through or not since there's a minimum number of students needed for a class to materialize. If in case we see that there are only a few enrollees, then we have time to think about our other options.
Entrepreneurship as core curriculum? Before we had this subject as elective, most of us heard that it's "toxic" because there are a lot of assignments which will make it quite difficult for us because we also work on weekdays. Yes, that's true but if it's the only way to push people like me to be innovative and have finance and business acumen, I think it should be one of the MBAH core curriculum. Why? Honestly, I think most of us doctors were taught service and not money matters during our several years of medical training. We also want comfortable lives but not to the expense of the patients we serve. So, in order to avoid such temptation, I think it would be best to know and be good at being an entrepreneur also.
Gym. I wish AGSB can have a gym where students can unwind. Besides, a sound mind needs a healthy body!
Food. To have a healthy body, we need nourishment! Well, AGSB is very near Powerplant mall but it is more convenient if our canteen serves a wider variety of food.
Observance of December 8. I am surprised why AGSB, a Jesuit institution, is not observing the Feast of the Immaculate Conception just like the Loyola Campus. Yes, there were Masses but maybe I just got used to the holiday every time this holy day is observed. I really think this is what differentiates Ateneans from the rest. We have a special place for Mother Mary in our hearts.4
PROTECTING OURSELVES FROM CREDIT CARD SCAMS WHEN WE DINE OUT
I was talking to a friend the other day and he was furious with what happened to him in a restaurant. He was charged twice, on the same date, same time, with different amounts at the same restaurant. It was a good thing that he takes time to read his credit card statements. How it happened, we have no idea. It was a good thing that the credit card provider acted right away.
How can we protect ourselves from unscrupulous people who make a living out of credit card scams? Did it cross our minds that there are a lot of things that might have taken place already in the few minutes that our cards were not with us? Do we bother to get the copy of our credit card receipts which have our number on it? What if identity thieves have access to it? All they have to do is look for our address in the net and if they are that lucky, it will be right in front of their faces in no time. A few weeks later, we get our credit card statement with all sorts of purchases we did not make. It is a good idea to always get our receipts, shred them regularly including outdated statements, bills and all the things with our personal information before tossing them in the garbage.
Another safety net is to always have the card with you. It would be better if dining facilities will have ambulant credit card swipers. Rather than the waiter asking for your card and returning it with the bill for you to sign, why not have ambulant cashiers who will have the card swiper on hand so that he can swipe the card in front of the customer? In that way, all card users will be protected. The chance for someone taking note of the security code will be almost nil if we have the card with us instead of the waiter bringing it to the cashier. It should not even cost the establishment because credit card providers should make it a point to provide certain number of the portable machines/swipers. 3
SAVING & SPENDING
I wish all of us were taught about saving and spending when we were still in grade school and not later. I think it is a good idea if banks accept lower minimum amount for a savings account with passbook that would encourage children to save! I am sure that when we were younger, our needs were simpler. We didn't even have to buy our basic needs. It has always been Dad and Mom paying for everything till we finish school and get a degree. That's a lot of savings! Imagine the humongous amount of money we could have saved by the time we have our degrees in College.
I wish Department of Education comes up with a subject that will encourage children to save and spend wisely. This will hopefully result to lesser Filipinos below poverty line. It's teaching responsibility and handling money well at a very young age. It would be better if the same subject will discourage unhealthy customs which put Filipinos in debt like asking for a loan just to celebrate an occasion.
Anyway, if you're like the rest of us who only thought of saving after having our first salary, then we have no choice but to budget the wage we get. One can check out the net to get suggestions on how to do this. I have my own suggestions:
Make a list of your income and expenses (utilities, basic necessities, financial obligations, etc). Keep in mind that you should also allot a portion of your wage to savings, emergency fund, and a pampering allowance. It would be good if retirement is also in your mind. After listing them down, set aside the amount for savings. Most experts say that we should save at least 10% of our wage but I think that it's a starting point. If you can save higher than 10%, that would be better. Open a bank account for your savings and don't touch it! If the amount reaches a minimum needed for an SDA (special deposit account) which has a higher interest than savings account, then go for it. Some invest their money on other portfolios but if you cannot take the risk of losing your hard-earned money, then SDA it is! Open another account for revolving fund. If the revolving fund gets too high, get some from it to be deposited to the savings account. Maybe it's time also for you to peg a higher percentage for savings. When you are really diligent with your money, you'll be surprised that you have saved more than what you thought you can save.
Income – Savings(10%, start) = Revolving Fund
Revolving Fund = (expenses for utilities, basic necessities, financial obligations) +
(emergency fund) + (pampering allowance) + (retirement) + (allowance) +
(money to maintain balance in bank)
How do we increase our savings and peg it to something like 25% of our wage? We lessen expenses! If we do that, we will notice that we have too much revolving fund. Hence, it is that time we can recalculate how much we can increase the amount we put in our savings.
Here's a list of how we can lessen expenses:
· Shop generic. Brand names cost a lot.
· Avoid keeping up with your friends or neighbors. Stick to your budget.
· Compare prices before you buy. This does not necessarily mean buy the cheapest though. Shop for quality but look for a lower price.
· Buy when there's a promo sale. Prices are cheaper at this time when there's a lot of promo going on. But, there will also be a lot of people doing the same thing so it will be kind of difficult to choose and expect a long queue at the cashier. Watch out for pickpockets!
· Eat at home. It's cheaper when you buy raw ingredients and cook at home. Besides, you'll be assured that the food you will eat is fresh, healthy, and clean.
· Pay in cash. If you cannot control yourself in using a credit card and you're an impulsive buyer, leave your plastic money at home. That will save you from being buried in debt.
· Stop impulsive buying. Make sure you schedule your trips to the mall and grocery. Make a list of what you have to buy. This saves not only money but time as well.
· Deposit your revolving fund in the bank and leave only some to pay the bills and a little for living allowance. This way, the money will not be readily available to us. We still have to go to an ATM or the bank to get some and that sometimes controls our spending.
· Cut out the bad habits. If you smoke or drink sodas or like alcoholic beverages or love candies and chocolates, cut them out. They are not good for your health anyway.
· Buy machine washable clothes. Turn off lights, television, and other appliances when not in use. This cuts down electric bills.
· If you do not have time to really watch television and would rather sleep at home after a long day's work, then what's the use of cable TV? Do you need a landline if you already have a cellular phone?
· Pamper yourself once a month! It is not good to deprive yourself of everything you want. Go on, splurge! You deserve a pampering day for all the work you've done. It's a reward to yourself that you met your goal of saving this much and keeping out of debt. Make a ceiling though lest you get from your savings. If this month's pampering allowance is not enough for what you have in mind, then wait for the next month's pampering allowance, then splurge. This way, you will not touch your savings. Or, you may want to save all the pampering allowances for several months then treat yourself with a vacation abroad! 4
MAINTAINING HARMONY IN SUBDIVISIONS
Parking is a prevailing problem in subdivisions especially when there are more vehicles than parking spaces. If space for parking is lacking, maybe there should be a policy that should limit the number of vehicles per household. If ever there will be visitors with their own vehicles, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to make sure their guests know about the parking guidelines being implemented. Maybe for every subdivision that will be built in the future, developers should allot a space for visitors or for other vehicles of the homeowners. To defray expenses, the village can ask for fees for use of the parking slots. This way, the income generated can be used to help the whole neighborhood as well.
The merriment in family gatherings and reunions is great. It is nice to see bonding and camaraderie all around. However, if that continues till the wee hours of early morning and one does not have the luxury of peace and quiet because of the neighbor's noise, that's bothersome. Call it being a scrooge but there are people who live next door who want to sleep. Maybe next time developers should take into consideration sound-proofing each house and making sure that there's enough space in between units so everyone gets rest even if neighbors are partying. Maybe someone can develop a push button sort of force field around the house so that sound will not travel next door! For those who do not have such luxury at present, then curfews should be observed even on holidays. For those who need more time partying, then there should likewise be a policy that they should rent the soundproofed clubhouse so as not to disturb other homeowners who want to call it a day.
Prying neighbors who do not mind their own business and gossips like paparazzi are a pain in the neck. It is unfortunate if you know one. I am not sure if we really should be angry or take pity. There must have been a reason why they became such obnoxious people. If you're kind of naughty and want to annoy such kind of neighbor, maybe we can just use things that will scare her out of her wits once she peeps in the gate! What about a motion sensor that will be programmed to make horrible or loathsome sounds once the person steps in your territory? Another suggestion is a myna bird which was taught to blurt out, "bawal ang pangit na ugali dito" every time the bird sees her. Or, maybe decorate the gate with dolls holding "please be quiet" signs. Kidding aside, maybe local officials should make it mandatory in communities to have associations that should come up with projects that would help the entire neighborhood. That will keep everyone preoccupied with ones' business. They can have dancing or art classes, exercise programs, outreach programs, clean and green activities. These will help occupy their time, curb their tongues, prevent gossip, promote harmony and camaraderie, and enhance personality. 3
