The stirrup was an important innovation for the warfare in medieval times
Ateneo Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Last night I was watching the History channel and what was discussed there was the stirrup. The device used on horses to support the weight of the rider. The stirrup enabled the rider to stay steady while riding the horse, Thus he could wage the fight on the horse.
Before the skirmish was purely an infantry affair fought on land standing, mano for mano. Now with the stirrup, the fight could be waged on the horse.
Thus, William the conqueror of France, at the Battle of Hastings fought a much superior Anglo Saxon force because of the stirrup.
Small but terrible innovation. huh?
