  • Fla.'s Orlando International Airport downsizes development plan
Officials at Orlando International Airport in Florida have shelved plans to build a new south terminal but still want to push through with a monorail and parking-garage project costing $470 million. The monorail project "is too important to the region's economy to be scuttled," according to Frank Kruppenbacher, the airport's chairman. Some major airlines oppose the move. Orlando Sentinel (Fla.) • $3B Willets Point project in NYC clears key hurdle
The New York City Planning Commission has granted permission for the final public review process to begin for the $3 billion Willets Point redevelopment project in Queens. This "marks a critical step towards beginning the long-needed cleanup of toxic land," said a spokesman for the city's Economic Development Corp. Key to the start of the cleanup is special approval to build an uncovered parking lot. The project will consist of 2,500 apartments, hotels, a mall, office buildings, a school and open space, and is expected to create an estimated 12,000 construction jobs for union members.
