NU12 #3 – Professionalism: New work, methods, practices – Lea Olegario
Being on time is a great way to show professionalism. Filipino’s are notorious in keeping time and the phrase ‘Filipino time’ has a negative connotation.
In the office, not coming on time or being tardy has a negative effect on the employee’s performance as well as on his pay as there is normally a pay cut corresponding to the number of minutes after the call time. In my case, I can actually come in late as I have a bit of flexibility in my time. However, I have had an encounter with one of my officemates who is part of my team and he seemed not to think highly of my coming in late. Although I can do it, it seems that it will help my team and encourage them more if I come in early – with the exceptions of days I need to be in a meeting at night of course.
And so to be able to come in early and even before the set time, which is 8 AM, I set my goal to come in at 7:50 AM at first. If I come in later than 7:50 AM I will consider myself as late. This is to make sure that I will not be late and even come in before the time I should be in the office. I will make this earlier after a month or so. My goal is to bring this down to 7:00 AM to encourage the team to come in early. I see that they have more energy and drive on their work seeing me go to the office early. Hopefully, this will help them overcome their tardiness and let them get the monthly incentive of an employee with perfect attendance – no absence or late. It will also improve my discipline and make me more productive starting out early at work. I believe it is a win-win move.
